Transcript?

The link for the url seems to always say "transcript". What do I do if the url is to an audio file of the interview? --Arctic Gnome 09:19, 4 December 2006 (UTC) editprotected

I second that. Please change the label "transcript" to some more appropriate label such as "interview".

okay...accessdate should now work for template:Cite interview just as in the other template:cite xxx templates:

Type?

What is the "type" field for? (Some detailed documentation would be great.) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 08:22, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Yeah. Any documentation would be great. --Jerome Potts (talk) 07:44, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
I just tried it and anything put in the "type" field replaces the word "interview" in the reference as shown on the page. - Hydroxonium (H3O+) 11:01, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Period, comma with "program", "city" parameters

In using this template like this:

I get:

Lucas, Jack (November 11, 2006). "Medal of Honor Series" (Interview). Interviewed by Ed Tracy. Pritzker Military Library. Retrieved 2007-09-12. cite interview: Check date values in: |date= (help); Unknown parameter |city= ignored (|location= suggested) (help); Unknown parameter |program= ignored (help)

which includes a period and a comma after the "program" parameter. Can someone more familiar with the code address this? Thanks — Bellhalla (talk) 06:15, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

editprotected
It's an error in coding for the city= parameter. Line 51 says
|{{#if: {} | , {city}. | }}
but the leading comma in
, {city}
should be removed, because every item that can be displayed prior to the city ends with punctuation. RossPatterson (talk) 14:58, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

--emerson7 14:22, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Maybe? I've added a category to see how this parameter is actually being used. I can't think of any cases off the top of my head that shouldn't be italicized, but may there are. --- RockMFR 19:01, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
After taking a look at a selection of the usages, it looks like this actually shouldn't always be italicized. Sometimes the program param is used for network names, or library names, or other things that are not italicized. In cases where there should be italics, they are usually there. Looks like it would be best to just add the italics manually when needed. --- RockMFR 00:06, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

"preferred" date format? what about MOS:SYL

According to MOS:SYL full dates should always be linked.

 1. Why doesn't this template follow the other cite xxx templates and automatically link the date?
 2. Why is it specified that the "date" field shouldn't have any wikilinks?

Just stumbled across this... Thought I should ask... ~ PaulT+/C 08:26, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

E-mail interviews?

These days, e-mail interviews are extremely common, yet "format" is limited to "Transcript", "Audio" and "Video". And what if the interview is unpublished? I interviewed the daughter of Katsuji Matsumoto for the article about him, but can't find a better way to cite it than what I currently have. It was suggested that I use this template, but the result, using the fields available, is not very informative. Or am I overlooking some clever way to the fields available? Matt Thorn (talk) 04:05, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

I agree with you about email interviews, but I'd probably use "Transcript" unless there's something peculiar about the format of the published interview itself (e.g., the full text of each email published as a separate document on the web). I believe the format parameter is intended to distinguish between the delivery format of the interview, so the reader knows to expect the playback of a video or audio stream. RossPatterson (talk) 15:21, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Regardless of the medium and format, unpublished information can't be used as a reference for Wikipedia articles. All references have to be verifiable, and by definition something that isn't available to others can't be verified. You'd be better off waiting for your article to be published and then citing the article instead, either with this template or one more appropriate to the published work. RossPatterson (talk) 15:23, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Quote

editprotected I think the template needs a separate "quote=" parameter, much like other cite templates. Especially that in most cases there's no easier way of pointing the reader to a particular quote, as interview transcripts barely ever have page numbers. //Halibutt 07:28, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to be a pain but I see no evidence for the 2nd or 3rd steps suggested above. It is possible that no one is going to comment on this proposal, in which case we could assume silent consensus, but I would like to see the testcases. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:08, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
Yep, you are right I did missed the test case, I have added a test case. d'oh! talk 13:29, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, I'm still not sure this is the best way to go. To attribute a quote to a particular source it is better to put an inline reference directly after the quote. Anyway I've added this for now. Could you update the documentation? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 09:21, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

I have updated the doc. I agree, but I used the quote attribute with other cite templates to direct readers in the section where I got the reference from, for things like interview transcripts, or other huge walls of text (that is not paginate). d'oh! talk 10:29, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Formatting issue - blank lines after use of template

I notice that there have some trailing blank lines after the entry when I use this template. When I use other citation templates, such as cite news and cite web, I can make a bulleted list with either and then follow it with a trailing blank line or not, and it renders the same - as would be for such list. However, when I use the interview template with a trailing blank line, it renders as if there are one or more blank lines. It only renders traditionally if there is no blank line between list items. Please make this template consistent with the others. Thanks. — ERcheck (talk) 14:13, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Can you give an example? RossPatterson (talk) 19:29, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

URL and redundancy

At present, completing the url field results in an extra, parenthesised external link named Interview.

For example,

yields

Gibson, William (1994). (Interview). Interviewed by Giuseppe Salza http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/235. Retrieved 2007-10-28. cite interview: Missing or empty |title= (help); Unknown parameter |city= ignored (|location= suggested) (help); Unknown parameter |month= ignored (help) It seems redundant to mention twice that the source is an interview; would "Interview with Giuseppe Salza" or even "Interview with Giuseppe Salza" not work better? As it stands, the template is inconsistent with cite web, which embeds the link in the name of the source. Thoughts? Skomorokh 18:48, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

I completely agree.--2008Olympianchitchat 07:07, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Organization as author

The current template does not support (or at least documented) |author=Nick Jr. as was needed in The Backyardigans article. — Dispenser 02:09, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Date linking

The template is linking dates automatically, no ISO format required. It links American style dates, which, if you use today's date, gives a red link. Can an admin please fix it? Cite web, cite news, etc., do not do this, so it has to be a problem with cite interview.--2008Olympianchitchat 07:10, 16 February 2009 (UTC)

Remove linking of accessdate

editprotected

Please remove the default linking of the accessdate field. I suspect this stems from when the norm was to write dates in the ISO YYYY-MM-DD format and link them for automatic formatting, but since that practice has for the most part passed, I would like to be able to fill in this field without linking (since linking a date like 2 March 2009 gives a red link). Mr. Absurd (talk) 04:51, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

I agree.   Done. Thanks, Martinmsgj 10:19, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Archivedate, archiveurl

Shouldn't these two fields be included on this template? __meco (talk) 17:30, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

edit protected I agree. This would be similar to the |archiveurl and |archivedate parameters used in Template:Cite web and Template:Cite news. Cunard (talk) 10:48, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

:) Could you test it then? I've created /testcases. Please add the new parameter to this and check it does what you intend it to do. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:30, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
Is there someone I could ask to fix the code? It is not working, and I have little knowledge about the how the template code works. Cunard (talk) 22:02, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
I can have a go, if you can clearly describe the behaviour you desire. Regards — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 23:12, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I want Template:Cite interview to have the |archiveurl= |archivedate= parameters that Template:Cite web and Template:Cite news have. For example, Template:Cite news with those two parameters show the following:

Goldstein, Bill (2003-01-01). "A Novelist Goes Far Afield but Winds Up Back Home Again". The New York Times. Archived from the original on 2010-02-21. Retrieved 2010-02-01.

However Template:Cite interview with the two parameters shows this:

Eugenides, Jeffrey (2003). "3am Interview An Interview with Jeffrey Eugenides, Author of the Middlesex and The Virgin Suicides" (Interview). Interviewed by Moorhem, Bram van. Archived from the original on 2010-02-21. Retrieved 2010-02-06. cite interview: Unknown parameter |program= ignored (help)

I posted a query to Template talk:Citation about whether that meta-template could be used for this template but I have had no response yet. If no one answers soon I will have to just try it out and see. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:58, 3 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I've also posted a query at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 132#Template talk:Cite interview#Archivedate, archiveurl to see if anyone there knows. Cheers, Cunard (talk) 21:11, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
Just so people don't go looking, neither have replies as of this date. The latter is archived. –xenotalk 14:07, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

YDone. But I was lazy and didn't make this use the template:citation/core meta template. At least the archive parameters and internals work exactly the same as there, so this change made porting it not any harder. Amalthea 15:54, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

The parameters work, and that's all that matters. Thanks, Cunard (talk) 20:34, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Year and Month Fields

Year and month fields don't work? With |date=29 |year=2010 |month=March, the result was "29". I just put the entire date in the date= parameter as the workaround. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 18:12, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

It would probably need to be "|day=" but there is no such parameter in the template. –xenotalk 14:06, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
I believe a single date parameter is preferred, these days, since you don't have to bother with any mdy/dmy parameters. Other citation template still support them, I believe, but only for legacy reasons, and they are no longer mentioned in the documentation. Amalthea 15:59, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Ok, thanks both of you. I guess it's somewhat explained on the template page and I hadn't noticed. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 16:59, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

Name parameter not implemented

The name parameters don't seem to appear, only the subject. Shouldn't the name parameters be implemented in the case of an interview where the interviewee talks about the subject, rather than him/herself? Not all interviews talk about the interviewee. -Temporal User (Talk) 09:02, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Could someone add page/pages parameters to this template? I'm currently trying to cite a single page from a PDF transcription of an interview. --Gyrobo (talk) 01:52, 28 August 2011 (UTC)

Could a page(s) parameter please be added to this template? It's helpful to allow for pagination when citing interview transcripts. Nikkimaria (talk) 16:44, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Please make the required changes to Template:Cite interview/sandbox and fully test it. Then reactivate the request, thanks. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:34, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
I'd love to, but I'm a terrible coder, so I'll rephrase: could someone who knows how to do this figure out how and add it? Nikkimaria (talk) 20:58, 29 August 2011 (UTC)
I've made the appropriate changes to the sandbox page. Could this please be added to the template? --Gyrobo (talk) 13:14, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
Sorry to be a pain, but could you assure me that you have tested the changes and that everything works as intended? Looking at the code, I'm not sure the punctuation is going to work correctly. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 15:51, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
works for this citation I took from Hudson Valley Rail Trail:
Pevsner, Donald (2009-01-27). "Donald Pevsner: Worked on Bridge Preservation" (PDF) (Interview). Interviewed by Jason Schaaf. pp. 3–4. Retrieved 2011-01-12. I said, "how would you like to sell me the bridge for a dollar including the right of way between the shore and the New Paltz over pass of the Thruway, if I could find somebody that responsively with insurance, with maintenance, you know without having it become a dangerous derelict," what we call in legal terms an attractive nuisance ... 'We just want to sell it to the first warm body,' that's direct (sic) quote as relayed to me by [a lawyer in Conrail's real estate department] ... they sold the bridge for $1 dollar along with the right of way which I negotiated out to the Thruway over past New Paltz, to a convicted bank swindler- felon named Gordon Schreiber Miller who operated out of a taxi cab office... cite interview: Unknown parameter |callsign= ignored (help); Unknown parameter |program= ignored (help)

Getting some clarification to make sure I completely understand...

The "last" and "first" slots are for the people being asked the questions, right? And the interviewer slot is for the person conducting the interview/asking the questions, correct? I'm slightly confused by the way the template is outputting these parameters, so I wanted to make sure I had their purposes correct. Also, does the cointerviewers parameter require the interviewer parameter to have information? I ask because it doesn't seem to do anything if I put both interviewers into it and leave the singular interviewer slot blank. - Purplewowies (talk) 03:06, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Removing et al

Apparently, it's possible to replace et al with the name of a ninth subject with "|display-authors = 9", however, this doesn't seem to do anything for me.

Apple; Banana; Cantaloupe; Dragonfruit; Elderberry; Fig; Grape; Honeydew; Ice Cream. (Interview). cite interview: Invalid |display-authors=9 (help); Missing or empty |title= (help)

The ref should list Ice Cream as the ninth, but it doesn't. Either I'm doing something wrong, or it really isn't possible. In the latter case, the doc shouldn't say it is. But the ninth subject would be wonderful as this interview (panel, actually) has exactly nine interviewees. ~TenTonParasol 02:27, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

The template will never show nine authors. I updated the documentation to better explain |display-authors=9:

 • display-authors: By default, the number of authors displayed is limited to 8; if 9 are provided, the ninth is displayed as "et al." This parameter allows display of fewer authors before the "et al."; example: |display-authors=2; if there are 8 or fewer authors, then "et al." may be suppressed by setting |display-authors=9.

---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 12:11, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

The problem is not in cite interview, but is a feature common to all the Citation Style 1 and Citation Style 2 templates, since it shows if we call directly:

 • Apple; Banana; Cantaloupe; Dragonfruit; Elderberry; Fig; Grape; Honeydew et al.
--Redrose64 (talk) 13:07, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah. I get it. So (on a slightly related note), I guess it would be bad form for me to list the nine subjects under authors (as opposed to individually listing them under separate parameters), wouldn't it? ~TenTonParasol 19:09, 6 March 2012 (UTC)
