Morton M. McCarver edit

Morton McCarver

Created by Aboutmovies (talk). Self nom at 08:15, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Morton M. McCarver is a New article, nominated two days after being created by Aboutmovies. It is long enough with 10,578 characters at the time first reviewed. It is within policy and meets core policies and guidelines, in particular: it is written using neutral prose, citing sources with inline citations, and it is free of copyright violations and plagiarism. The hook is properly formatted using less than 200 characters and it meets the formatting guidelines. The content is interesting, and the hook fact is accurate and cited with an inline citation in the article. It is neutral and does not focus unduly on negative aspects of living people. QPQ was satisfied with a review of Bland Mayfly. The image included with this nomination is free, and it is used in the nominated article. It renders well when sized at 100 × 100px. The following minor discrepancies have been identified and corrections should be addressed before the hook is promoted to the prep area for posting in an available queue:
  1. Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Capital letters#Compass points, do not capitalize unless they form part of a proper name.
  2. The sentence, "His father died during his youth, ..." is ambiguous for it is not clear whether the father died at a young age, or if the father died while Morton was still young. Please copy edit it for clarity.
  3. On two occasions there are time spans involving consecutive years. Refer to WP:YEAR and determine which of either, 1833–34 or 1833/34, should be used. The hyphen indicates spans longer than twelve months, encompassing both years while the slash indicates a period of twelve months or less which spans into both years.
  4. Copy edit to remove WP:WEASEL "words to watch" and expressions of doubt. For example, "In 1849, he [claims] to have ...", and "the [purported] Native American name ...".
  5. The article does not establish a basis for referring to Morton M. McCarver as Matthew McCarver; as in, "Matthew McCarver died on April 17, 1875, ..." Either establish in early prose that Morton M. McCarver was commonly know as Matthew McCarver, or remove the unencyclopedic familiarity.
  • Hold promoting of hook to queue until the above descrepiencies are addressed, or corrected by copy edit. --My76Strat (talk) 09:45, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
  • I'm not sure what compass point you are referring to, as the only one capitalized would be the West. As in the West, as in the West when referring to the American West is indeed capitalized. As to death in youth, I changed it, but please note that if the father died in his youth (usually under about 14 years of age), it would have been difficult to father Morton. As to the date ranges, one is in the infobox and that is how they are done in infoboxes; the other follows WP:YEAR "Ranges expressed using prepositions (from 1881 to 1886 or between 1881 and 1886) should not use en dashes (not from 1881–1886 or between 1881–1886)", as "of" is a preposition. As to the words to watch, as that guideline says, there are exceptions. Here, McCarver made the claim (there is a quote in one of the sources that is behind a pay wall about pointing out a nice spot for Sacramento to one of the Sutters) he founded Sacramento, but if you review sources just on Sacramento's founding, the only mention of McCarver is as his election to the city council like body, so hard to re-phrase, but I'm open to suggestions. Same with the name of Tacoma. McCarver was told Tacoma was the name for Mt. Rainer, but it may or may not be true. Aboutmovies (talk) 06:30, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Thank you for that response. I apologize for the delay in acknowledging your response. Regarding the date range, I misread the part about use of prepositions and somehow imagined it to say it was to be avoided; obviously you are correct in that regard. I did consider that having fathered Morton was nearly sufficient to establish the context. I think it reads better now however, after you changed it. Yes it would be the West I refereed to in the lead and one section heading. I'll grant it that you are perhaps ahead of me regarding grammar, so please correct where I may be wrong, but I had thought the definite article would be capitalized if it preceded a proper noun. If that is correct, it would either be "the west", or "The West". I am seeing plenty of prose however, that indicates "the West" is correct which leads me to believe I am thinking of titles. In either regard, I am satisfied that you have adequately addressed the matters I asked of you and give the approval due. Nice job with the article.—My76Strat • talk • email • purge 22:45, 29 January 2013 (UTC)
