My changes edit

  • I have merely reorganized the text (which was a copy-paste of text from here anyway)
  • Removed some bad grammar and/or spelling mistakes.
  • Reorganized the contents, made sections (which of course are open to any to edit).

So i dont see how i have missed out any vital information. I have no intention (neither the time) of starting an edit war here.

If there are any problem with the way i have re-organized text, please put them up here and we will work at them. Until such time, please let the changes stay.

New additions edit

  • Several Links to the main site - Mayuresh 09:41, 25 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

New list pages edit

Seems the list of winners is getting pretty lengthy. Why not have a list page? Any suggestions welcome. The start seems to have been done by List of Sangeet Natak Akademi awardees for kathakali, which by the way needs a better name. -- Mayuresh 19:38, 10 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Disruptive edits concerning citations related to Sangeet Natak Akademi edit

Elaborated the same in Indian Classical Dance talk page and repeating it here for the same disruptions were done by the same person concerning citations.

To elaborate, extracting the contents as listed on the http://sangeetnatak.gov.in/sna/guide-snaawards.htm towards the guidelines for election of Akademi Ratna (Akademi Fellow) & Selection of Akademi Puraskar (Akademi Awards). As of date (since it's inception in 1952) the following are the listed classical dances which are recognized (and awarded) and they are detailed below (extracted below from the earlier stated website). There is specific mention of including other forms as elaborated in the statement Other major traditions of Dance and Dance Theatre (Other Major Traditions of Dance are to be listed by name by the Secretariat of the Akademi and put up to the Executive Board for approval).

3B) Field of Activity: Dance (Number of Puraskar (Awards) – 8) Categories of Puraskar (Awards):

  1. Bharatanatyam
  2. Kathak
  3. Kathakali
  4. Manipuri
  5. Kuchipudi
  6. Odissi
  7. Sattriya
  8. Mohiniattam

Number of classical dances edit

  • The source link (Sangeet Natak Akademi) is expired. I updated it.
  • Both the old and the new link list nine dance forms instead of eight, Chhau being the ninth. Chhau is also listed on the website of the Ministry of Culture. Thus I added Chhau to the list.

More generally speaking, there might be a question mark about the "classical" status altogether. While these dance forms are generally called "classical", I found no official document supporting the fact that these dance forms have been granted "classical" status by any public authority. The source link itself does not have a single occurrence of the term "classical". Does anyone have more details about this?
