Working Draft: Pietro del Donzello was a Florentine artist who learned under Giusto di Andrea and was known for his painted standards and shields.[1]
Pietro, with his brother and fellow artist Ippolito, received commissions throughout Italy in the late 15th century [2]
In 1487, Pietro is believed to have painted a depiction of Jason and the Argonauts for Lorenzo Tornabuoni, the cousin of Lorenzo de' Medici, for his wedding to Giovanna degli Albizzi. The painting, which hung in his personal room in the Medici Florentine palace, captures the moment Jason bids his uncle Peleus farewell before sailing off with his fellow Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece. The painting currently belongs to the Mari Cha Collection.[3]
According to Vasari in 1488 Pietro and Ippolito, employed with Giuliano da Maiano, traveled to Naples and painted a fresco in the Villa Poggio Reale for King Alfonso. [4]
One of Pietro's only confirmed paintings, an Annunciation set amid classical architecture, lies in a chapel in Santo Spirito Church in Florence. The work was restored from 2012-2014 by the non-profit group Friends of Florence. [5]
In 1500 Pietro painted an oil on wood scene of "Virgin and Child with John the Baptist and Angels," now held by the The Cleveland Museum of Art.[6]
The Fitzwilliam museum in Cambridge also has a oil on canvas painting attributed to Donzello depicting St. Julian The Hospitaler. The painting was bequeathed in 1912 to the museum by Charles Brinsley Marlay.[7]
