There is an error in the second paragraph, which begins:

"Manning played college football at the University of Tennessee, leading the Volunteers to the Division I FBS national championship as a senior in 1998. He was chosen by the Indianapolis Colts with the first overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. From 1998 to 2010, he led the Colts to seven American Football Conference (AFC) championships..."

The error is as follows and does not need reference as other, correct portions of the article point out the conflict: - Manning was not on the 1998 Tennessee team that won the FBS national championship. - Manning left Tennessee before the 1998 season. - Manning's senior season was 1997 - His final game for Tennessee was in the 1998 Orange Bowl against Nebraska on January 2, 1998. [I was at this game.]

So, a more correct entry might begin:

"Manning played college football at the University of Tennessee, leading the Volunteers to the 1997 SEC Championship in his senior season. He was chosen by the Indianapolis Colts with the first overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft. From 1998 to 2010, he led the Colts to seven American Football Conference (AFC) championships..."

The "College Career" section later in the article is also misleading. The second paragraph begins:

"As a freshman, Manning was the third-string quarterback, but injuries to Todd Helton and Jerry Colquitt forced him to take over the Mississippi State game, a 24–21 loss. In his first start, the following week against Washington State..."

This implies that Manning made his first on-the-field appearance for Tennessee in the Mississippi State game. However, Manning made an appearance in Tennessee's opening game, September 3, 1994 versus UCLA. I also attended that game. So, a more correct entry might begin:

"As a freshman, Manning was the third-string quarterback, but saw action beginning with Tennessee's opening game against UCLA. Eventually injuries to Todd Helton and Jerry Colquitt forced him to take over in the Mississippi State game, a 24–21 loss. In his first start, the following week against Washington State..."

Colts to release Peyton Manning Wednesday

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2012/03/report-colts-to-release-peyton-manning-wednesday/1 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.253.68.83 (talk) 00:52, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

It has already been added. Baseball Watcher 02:23, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

The Colts have HAD THEIR PRESS CONFERENCE announcing that they will release Manning, and yet there are at least two editors still objecting to the inclusion of the following material: "On March 7, 2012, the Colts announced that they would release Manning." (With citation to http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7656028/indianapolis-colts-peyton-manning-part-ways-14-seasons) Ridiculous. Terence7 (talk) 19:14, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

It's already in the body of the article, but it doesn't warrant mention in the lead. His overall career is much more important than his being released. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:16, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Give me a break! This is absolutely huge news in the context of his career. You can be assured that his release from the Colts is going to be in the intro section of this article in the long term, just as Joe Montana's trade to the Chiefs is in the intro section of his article. Terence7 (talk) 19:20, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
His Super Bowl win, his being drafted #1 overall, and his breaking many records belongs in the lead. For the same reason deaths are not included in the lead typically, unless they were particularly notable, we should not include his release in the intro. (By the way, he still has not been officially released, so this would be a BLP violation until then. I've fully protected the page in the meantime.) Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:28, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
How on earth did you become a WP administrator. What an embarrassment. You're abusing your authority in locking down the article. They have announced his release; it's entirely appropriate to include that announcement in the lead of the article. Terence7 (talk) 19:30, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
If you would like to open up an WP:ANI discussion about my administrative actions, go ahead. The only thing being reported right now is that Manning "will" be released. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:33, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
And that is entirely appropriate to be included in the article. This is a perfectly reasonable point I and others are making and yet you've resorted to locking down the article to win the argument. Terence7 (talk) 19:37, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
It's already in the article, see Peyton Manning#2011 season. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:40, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
I'm talking about the lead specifically. That's what we've been talking about the whole time. Don't be evasive. Terence7 (talk) 19:48, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
That should be discussed here then, not edit warred over on the article. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:49, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
I've already discussed it! You're the one who hasn't made any specific, substantive points as to why the announcement of his release shouldn't be included in the lead. Terence7 (talk) 19:52, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
It's undue weight in a BLP. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:54, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
You linked to policies with which I am familiar, but you don't explain specifically why they should exclude the material we are talking about. Please make your point with greater specificity, bearing in mind that I have already addressed this: See Joe Montana for example. Manning's release is as significant in the context of his career as Montana's trade to the Chiefs was in his. Terence7 (talk) 20:01, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
By comparison, I don't see a mention of Brett Favre's release from the Jets in the lead there. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:04, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
But you DO see his trade TO the Jets, which is actually the more appropriate analogy, as we are talking about his departure from the team (Packers) with which he had spent the majority of his career, just like Manning and the Colts. Is that really your best point? Terence7 (talk) 20:06, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Had he been released, only his signing with the Jets would have been noted. The point is, how Favre became a Jet is more important than how he left Green Bay. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:08, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
That's an argument for removing the mention of Manning's release AFTER he signs with another team (Shouldn't you be attuned to the fact that he theoretically might not sign with another team, since you're so focused on the fact that his release is not "official" despite the press conference?). Why not include the mention of his release until then? Terence7 (talk) 20:11, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
While editing, we need to keep in mind a historical view per WP:RECENTISM. We can't really point to other articles for reference (per WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS). Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:15, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
I think that Peyton Manning's release from the Colts is a major event in his career, and does deserve mention in the lead. While I obviously can't know for sure how people in the future will view events, I think his release from the Colts is likely to be viewed as a more significant effect of his neck surgeries than his missing the 2011 season. Just because an event is recent does not mean that it is unimportant. I think a single sentance mentioning his release in the lead would be the appropriate amount of weight to give the event. Calathan (talk) 21:01, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Now that he's officially been released, I've added that line to the lead. Eagles 24/7 (C) 21:12, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Current Events tag?

I added a current events tag b/c he's been cut. Anyone think that's unwarranted?JIMfoamy1 (talk) 00:00, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

I don't believe {{current}} is applicable for this article. The instructions for the template say "It is not intended to be used to mark an article that merely has recent news articles about the topic; if it were, hundreds of thousands of articles would have this template, with no informational consequence." Eagles 24/7 (C) 00:04, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
I agree that the tag isn't appropriate here. It is only intended for rapidly developing stories, where information in the article may quickly become outdated or need to be changed often. I don't think that is the situation with this article at all. Calathan (talk) 00:18, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

Where Does He Live?

I didn't notice any mention of where he lives. I was wondering if somebody could add some info to the personal section about that. Where does he live, how many cities does he own homes in, etc. For instance it was reported he has a condo in Miami. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.183.171.79 (talk) 03:52, 8 March 2012 (UTC)

2011 Contract

According to the opening paragraph.

"In February 2011, Manning signed a five-year, $90 million contract extension with the Colts"

This is unreferenced and incorrect, it was signed in July and this is said under the 2011 portion of the article.

"The Colts placed their franchise tag on Manning on February 15, 2011.[185] On July 30, 2011, the Colts signed Manning to a 5 year, $90 million contract after negotiations in which he made it clear that he did not need to be the highest-paid player in the NFL.[186]" Legiglass (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 17:04, 8 March 2012 (UTC).

Released from Colts

He's gone. He's been released take the protection off. It's ALL over the news. He's gone from the Colts. Redmustang03 (talk) 19:26, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Do you have a source that his release is official? Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:28, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

ESPN's report just now carried the graphic "Officially released by the Colts" and word that teams are free to sign him at 4 PM EST. What exactly is Wiki waiting for? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.94.63.254 (talk) 19:44, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Thank you!!! Terence7 (talk) 19:48, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Reuters:

Peyton Manning was released by the Indianapolis Colts after a 14-year stint with the franchise

That report is making the rounds. So, again, what exactly is wiki waiting for? Or do you just want to have outdated information? 75.94.63.254 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:09, 7 March 2012 (UTC).

We cannot change the article to reflect his release until the official paperwork is filed by the Colts. The Reuters article you mention is just going off of the press conference. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:12, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

So you want outdated information on the page, gotcha. Dunce. 75.94.63.254 (talk) 20:22, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

WP:NPA. Oh, lookie, he's just now been officially released by Schefter [1]. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:38, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

What gives you the right to say a Reuters report is incorrect? Or are they not a reliable source anymore? Sure seems like a lot of internet sites find them reliable, because that report has been parroted everywhere. Are you waiting for him to sign with a new team? Because that's probably gonna happen if you keep the article locked to show him still with a team he is no longer with. 75.94.63.254 (talk) 20:43, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

I never said Reuters was incorrect, I just believe their wording was incorrect then. Adam Schefter said he's been officially released (as of like 20 minutes ago, the Reuters article was written much before that), and I've already updated the article as such. Eagles 24/7 (C) 20:45, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Now that's just stupid. Reuters can't be trusted but a tweet can? Whatever, at least there's right information on the page now. 75.94.63.254 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 20:47, 7 March 2012 (UTC).

Does it make sense to have this paragraph in the 2011 Season section? It seems more relevant to the 2012 season, especially since there will soon be info about who he signs with. Or maybe just a Released from Colts section or some such. Donpayette (talk) 14:05, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

An entire section for two sentences? Besides, the 2012 league year doesn't even start until next week. Eagles 24/7 (C) 18:10, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

2012 Manning sweepstakes

Is the article 2012 Manning sweepstakes a good split, or is somebody using it as an end run around the semi-protection here? —C.Fred (talk) 00:49, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

Broncos contract

It has been reported by ESPN (source http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7709195/barring-snag-peyton-manning-picks-denver-broncos-sources-say) thay Peyton Manning has chosen to sign with the Denver Broncos.

Nothing will go on this article until its official and the contract is signed. Karl 334 Talk 17:38, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Manning himself has not signed a contract, therefore he is still a free agent and not a member of the Denver Broncos. Wait until it's officially announced. Karl 334 Talk 20:24, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

Peyton Manning has signed with the Denver Broncos. He is no longer a free agent.

Edit request on 20 March 2012

On March 20, 2012, Manning reached an agreement in principle to join the Denver Bronco's as their starting quarterback. The new contract was for five (5) years and $95 million. Instrumental in making the agreement come together was the relationship between Peyton Manning, John Elway, Coach John Fox and Owner Pat Bowlen.

  • I've changed to semi-protection: I don't want to see half the IPs in the US report on every Manning-related fart. On the other hand, there are now more firm reports in reliable sources, so opening it up at least somewhat seems fair. (The article was protected after a reasonable request at RPP.) Charitable Works - The PeyBack Foundation

In 1999 Payton Manning created the PeyBack Foundation with his wife Ashley Manning to provide programs promoting leadership and growth opportunities as well as support for children who would otherwise not have access to such programs, focusing on children who have been abused and neglected. Payton and his wife continue to support the Foundation financially and act as president and vice president to ensure their part in all decision making. The Foundation supports many programs and organizations in Indiana, Tennessee and Louisiana through its grant program, as well as funding and operating a number of its own programs including The PeyBack Scholarship, True Heroes, Ticket Incentive Program and the PeyBack Bowl, to name a few. The Foundation also participates in relief efforts, supports the children’s hospital at St. Vincent in Indianapolis, as well as the boys & girls club, after school programs and summer camps. Since 2002 the Foundation has been responsible for over 4.3 million dollars in donations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ryksek (talkcontribs) 19:34, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

Under "The Manning Bowl" section, last sentence - Eli's Giants will host Peyton's Broncos. Not vice versa like listed. In 2009 the Broncos hosted the Giants and in 2005 the Giants hosted the Broncos. So in 2013, the Giants have their turn to host the Broncos. See NY Giants future schedule.

Proposed removal of redundant publisher information

A number of citations in this article unnecessarily include the publisher for periodicals and websites that have their own Wikipedia article. This information has no value to anyone wanting to check or track down references. For example, publisher=Washington Post Company for references to The Washington Post, or publisher=MLB Advanced Media for references to Baseball-Reference.com, only make the article longer - significantly longer when repeated many times - without adding anything useful. Therefore I plan to upgrade the article's citations to remove all such redundant publisher info, bringing them into line with the recommended use of the cite template (see Template:Citation#Publisher). Edit Request: Remove Chad Pennington Dig

On Sept 13 2012, ylee edited the page to version 512109402 and included this line:

"Manning was unable to complete his throwing motion, and his arm strength was so poor that he was compared to Chad Pennington. "

I don't know about the sourcing of Manning's ability to complete a throwing motion, but I know the only people comparing him to Chad Pennington were people who didn't like the New York Jets. Can someone take this section out, as it's not serious and is just a slam at Chad Pennington? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.62.234.253 (talk) 01:43, 30 December 2013 (UTC)

  • Who is Chad Pennington? Is he noted for poor arm strength? WHO made this comparison? Is there a source for ANY of this sentence? 216.220.4.195 (talk) 17:57, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
Done. That statement definitely ran afoul of WP:NPOV. Thanks for the alert.--JayJasper (talk) 18:16, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Peyton Manning has now won the AFC offensive player of the year award 8 times yet the article only reflects 7. It's official that he's won that award this year, here's the link (http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article-2/The-2013-101-Award-Winners-Announced/6108e50e-d597-4863-9e11-aaf84d611b3f) The article even shows 5 ap mvps even though thats not official yet, the least you could do is update an official award. You even have on the Kansas City 101 awards page that Peyton won it in 2013 and if you count the total he's won it's 8 and not 7. 2601:5:1000:9D:B08F:3383:6891:2CC3 (talk) 06:31, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Please add the following to the end of the section on 2013 season: Peyton Manning is also the second quarterback to have 3 different Head Coaches for his 3 Super Bowl appearances after Kurt Warner. Bvanwye (talk) 01:18, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Not done: First off, you'll need to provide a reliable source that substantiates this in order for it to be included in the article and not be considered original research. That being said, at some point the bits of trivia about firsts and seconds that Peyton Manning has accomplished needs to end - personally, I don't think this bit of information warrants inclusion in the article. --ElHef (Meep?) 02:03, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Please change Manning's age from 37 to 38 because it is his birthday.

Already done The templates within this article (and most biographical articles on Wikipedia) automatically update the person's age on their birthday. If you're still seeing it as age 37 then you're probably looking at a cached version of the page - see WP:REFRESH for help. --ElHef (Meep?) 18:10, 24 March 2014 (UTC)

Manning Bio is Incomplete

Any discussion about Peyton Manning should note his reputation as not being able to win big games. Great regular season stats but chokes in major playoff games in spite of playing for great coaches, in historically prolific offenses and most of his career playing in a temperature controlled dome for some of the most talented teams ever assembled. Peyton Manning Career Playoff Record: 11-12, With Eight One-and-Done Postseason Trips and 1-3 in Super Bowls. Not very good.

Possibly related to above comment

I am not an expert in American football, however I did notice a largely hagiographic section regarding Manning's accomplishments which was unsourced. I tagged it but rv the last sentence as it seemed a bit jarring in the laudatory context of the rest of the paragraph so I wasn't sure if it had been inserted mischievously or atavistically. Obviously even if atavistic it doesn't mean it's not true, but it's unsourced, so I hope someone familiar with Manning's record and the NFL in general can confirm or debunk it. If it is accurate I will restore (or any editor can do so):

"With the loss to the Seahawks, he surpassed Brett Favre for the most postseason losses by a quarterback in NFL history."

In 2013, ESPN broadcasted a documentary called The Book of Manning about the Manning family. The documentary was an audience success in the United States.

Sexual misconduct scandal

Any quick search of the internet reveals a complex history of a sexual misconduct scandal when Manning was in college, but this page doesn't even refer to it. I think it ought to, in the interest of giving a complete picture of the man. If his charitable works are relevant to his biography, the alleged incident is as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.0.66.98 (talk) 07:14, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Omaha

Omaha is a word that Manning frequently uses on the field. I don't know if it needs to be in the article. However, disambiguation for "Omaha" has Peyton Manning as a link. So either a) Omaha should NOT point to Peyton Manning, or b) something about Omaha should be added to the Peyton Manning article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.139.4.36 (talk) 04:47, 24 October 2014 (UTC)

All of the NFL records on this page need an asterisk after them to indicate that they were attained while playing nine seasons in a division with three expansion teams. Since no other quarterback since the dawn of time has had this gravy train opportunity and it is highly unlikely that another one ever will, if these bogus records can't be erased, they at least need an asterisk. Tgibbs66 (talk) 00:47, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

"the NFL's rejects'". That doesn't sound appropriate for a biography of a living person. Stickee (talk) 01:13, 28 October 2014 (UTC)

Peyton Manning records

Can I advocate some rationalisation of the records highlighted on the page? Peyton holds so many significant passing records, I am not sure why the records section is clogged up by so many indifferent statistics like: "One of only 2 quarterbacks to complete 80% of his passes in two playoff games (tied with Kurt Warner)". Really? So what? Lost in amongst all junk, the fact that he is the NFL's all time passing TD leader gets dropped to the bottom, and the fact that he was the postseason career passing yardage leader had gotten left off entirely. I am cautious about deleting records and achievements, because people get very sniffy about that. But I think if we discuss it sensibly on the talk page, we can agree some sensible rationalisation. For one thing, presumably all of the "second placed" records could go? (Or if not, why don't we have the really significant second placed records there, like career completions and career yardage?). Any other views? --Legis (talk - contribs) 09:37, 4 November 2014 (UTC)
