September 7, 2010 format? edit

Can anyone help me out with the format I should write for the September 7, 210 release.Syedwaheedhussain (talk) 16:19, 3 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

It was released today for US radio stations. Just turn on the radio and you can listen it. --189.31.38.170 (talk) 22:54, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not done, the page WILL NOT be created until there is evidence of notability per WP:NSONGS. If you cannot adhere to this then you maybe banned/blocked. -- Lil_℧niquℇ №1 | talk2me 23:59, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Protection edit

Note that this article is completely locked from editing. If you feel that the song is notable please create the article in a WP:SANDBOX then notify people on this talk page and an administrator will review the request to decide if the article is now notable. It was protected because a previous WP:CONSENSUS decided that there was not enough detailed information from WP:RELIABLE sourced to warrant a seperate article. If you are unsure of what this means please ask me personally. (note I am not an administrator) -- Lil_℧niquℇ №1 | talk2me 00:25, 8 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Remove The redirect! edit

I think I can reviatalizar page, remove the redirect, the article already contains sources and faithful cover.*Fr@Πkl!nG* (talk) 02:15, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Doesnt matter. no charts? no awards? no release date (digital or Cd) not notable. - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 02:16, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dont worry *Fr@Πkl!nG*..the page will soon be recreated. I am already workin on it. And (CK)Lakeshade this song is going to be released as a digital download on September 21,2010 and will soon chart on hot 100. Syedwaheedhussain (talk) 11:50, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Syed, it is because of users like you that the page has had to be protected in the first page. CLK has created the article in his sandbox which is exactly what should be done in this situation. He has almost established notability so his version will be checked and approved for creation. You may then add whatever you like to that version so long as it is appropriate and reliably sourced. -- Lil_℧niquℇ №1 | talk2me 18:10, 10 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Genres edit

Let's please come to a consensus on genres here so there is no further back-and-forth. The general feeling seems to be that dance-pop and eurodance apply, and both are sourced. As some reviewers may categorize it by using the broad term "dance" or "dance music", I believe we should go with more specific genres: e.g. just reading the Wikipedia article on Dance music shows it covers a huge range of music, and one of the sub-categories listed under "2010s" is Dance-pop. Dance by itself leads to the act of dancing - obviously not the same thing. - eo (talk) 21:01, 11 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Okay this should put an edit to this. Source one under composition says "Incorporating strobing, dance club beats in the chorus, Rihanna pleads for her lover to give her all the attention, singing" and if you read the definition of dance pop in wikipedia it says, "Complete with pounding, dance club upbeats and catchy melodies. :) - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 21:04, 11 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
The song upon listen is arguably "Don't Stop the Music" part two. So, dance-pop is definitely the headline genre. However, her vocals on the chorus are very different to that on DSTM, in the sense that they are very soulful and R&B-like - and extremely similar to Whitney Houston's "Million Dollar Bill". Therefore, I believe it should be classified as dance-pop and R&B. Although it has eurodance and house music characteristics, it is not a eurodance nor a house song. Blizzard01 (talk) 06:55, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Not one person has called it R&B. Only Eurodance and dance pop. - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 07:02, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Rihanna is an R&B/Pop artist, the vast majority of her singles to-date are R&B songs combined with X genre which is usually a pop sub genre or just pop. I do not see how this is an exception for this song with main reference to the vocals on the chorus which on listen are not typical to that of the eurodance or dance-pop genre. The backing of the song is dance-pop. Vocally it is pop in the verses and R&B in the chorus. Blizzard01 (talk) 07:26, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
You cannot personally decide its R&B. Unless a source says it it cannot be added, no ifs ands or buts. To add such a thing would violate, WP:OR, WP:V and non WP:RS compliance. - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 07:29, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

An end? edit

  • Composition : "Incorporating strobing, dance club beats in the chorus" + "This Euro-pop dance cut is a complete 180 from the sullen".
  • Critcal Reception : "With its club ready bassline and Euro-pop influences,+ "[the song] aims squarely for dancefloor domination, + "After going deep and dark on her last album, Rihanna has returned to the dance floor with her new single".
  • Definition of dance pop. "Complete with pounding, dance club upbeats and catchy melodies, the songs of this music are fully-formed and more influenced by pop song structure than pure dance music"
  • Lets do the math: Dance club beats means/or is equal to DANCE POP. ""This Euro-pop dance" is a direct quote so is euro pop no ifs ands or buts.
  • All of this adds up to what ive written in the composition section ; "Only Girl" is a mid-tempo dominant dance-pop song that incorporates elements of euro-dance pop in its production and beats.

Now, i have explained in detail the genres. Unless a new source states the song is a different genre like R&B, it is not to be added. The genres currently listed are not to be removed, doing so will be considered disruptive, so dont remove them, please and thank you. Unless there are further comments i think we should close this discussion. - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 07:47, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

ChicagoNow states here that the song is uptempo, not midtempo. - Blizzard01 (talk) 08:47, 12 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry but there's a bit of over synthesis going on. When words like influences and like are used it changes the meaning. the Song is primarily Europop and dance-pop hence those genres should be left. -- Lil_℧niquℇ №1 | talk2me 13:58, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I fully agree. We don't classify Lady Gaga as eurodance, do we? --z33k (talk) 15:02, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Europop with dance beats does not equal Eurodance, as the latter is actually an extremely specific type of music. -- Lil_℧niquℇ №1 | talk2me 23:04, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Who agrees this song also falls under the genre Electropop? Many artists, including those who are not really associated with the electronic dance music genre released Electropop songs since its popularity rose in late 2008.. artists like Lady Gaga, Kesha, Heidi Montag, La Roux, Enrique Iglesias, Mike Posner, The Saturdays, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding, even artists like Usher, Ne-Yo, Kelly Rowland, Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown (check out his latest single "Yeah 3x") - Hiddenstranger (talk) 22:24, 21 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pop Songs? edit

I have added thr rest of the countries where the digital download released on 13th. I looked on the Pop Songs reference and Only Girl is not on there. So it needs to be removed! Iluvrihanna24 (talk) 19:43, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

What are you talking about? - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 19:58, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well [1] is referenced, but "Only Girl (In the World)" is not shown at the page. Adabow (talk · contribs) 20:21, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
I know. It will be updated thursday, theres a hidden note beside the charting that states "According to http://www.billboard.com/column/chartbeat/chart-highlights-country-rock-songs-more-1004114305.story?tag=hpfeed#/column/chartbeat/chart-highlights-country-rock-songs-more-1004114305.story?tag=hpfeed the single has and will chart at 31 on Thursday, September 16th 2010." Ive done it this way so i can simply remove the note once the song charts are released rather then having to go back in and reformat and change the ref - (CK)Lakeshade - talk2me - 20:23, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Second week charting edit

A Billboard news article is up about the decreased second week sales (161,000), and declines in position on both the Hot 100 and the Hot Digital Songs for this week's charts. Don't know if it's worth mentioning or not in this article. Maybe not. Yvesnimmo (talk) 05:05, 30 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

#1 on Hot 100 or not? edit

The charts section on this page says it's #3, but the discography page says #1. Plus, the Chart Performance section says it's her 6th #1 to debut on hot 100 and 8th overall, but it debuted at 75 and climbed to 3, so someone isn't checking what is written. calvin999 (talk) 15:22, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lil, I don't think there's a problem with a user editing his own comments, especially before anybody's even replied to them. Self-editing (like this, within a minute) is widely accepted on WP and, from my personal point of view, appreciated. (I'm not going to delete Calvin's text because it's not mine, although it's clear the user wanted it gone. I'll let you do it, since you restored it, or let Calvin remove it again, and hope nobody resurrects it again.  ) — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 16:30, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I didn't even delete the whole comment, i deleted like one sentance or a bit less. I don't get why it's such a big deal! calvin999 (talk) 22:43, 12 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well no there isn't now is there, i said about it nearly a week ago! SO it's obviously been corrected since then.calvin999 (talk) 13:24, 13 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
As to the discepancy about the peak on the Hot 100, both this page and the Rihanna discography show #3 for this song. Were you maybe looking at "Love the Way You Lie" by mistake? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 16:42, 9 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
No i wasn't. looking at Love The Way You Lie, that's in a different section, not in Rihanna's solo singles.calvin999 (talk) 22:43, 12 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
So, do you still think there's some discrepancy (that I don't see)? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 01:00, 13 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
The song peaked at number 3. It has not reached number 1.— nickyp88 (talk)

"Gender bending" edit

Regarding this edit: I realize that "hot guy" may not be the correct lyric, but Rolling Stone is a generally reliable publication and any "gender bending" analysis is certainly of note. Are there reliable sources that say the lyric is something else that can be used as a footnote? Or is there an official source that provides the song lyrics? (I know Google Play has lyrics for certain songs, and sometimes the lyrics on Genius.com are verified by performers/songwriters.) Here's what I'm thinking:

Jon Dolan for Rolling Stone commented that Rihanna is gender-bending in the line "Love me like I'm a hot guy."[1][note 1]

Notes

  1. ^ The correct lyrics, according to [source], are "Love me like I'm a hot ride."[2]

References

  1. ^ Rolling Stone
  2. ^ Lyric source

@Calvin999 and Tomica: Would either of you care to discuss this, especially you Calvin, since you just reverted? –Chase (talk / contribs) 23:11, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
There is a big difference between "hot guy" and "hot ride". The latter is correct. Gender bending has nothing to do with riding, of any sort, especially a car. Therefore it is completely pointless to keep it in. So I don't see why you would want to keep it when the lyric is wrong and mistaken by the RS reviewer. It makes that part of his review completely redundant. And that is all there is to it, there's nothing else to discuss. I don't know why you are placing more emphasis on me to discuss (as per usual), because both me and Tomica have reverted you.  — ₳aron 23:17, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
(1) Do you have a source for the correct lyrics? (2) Even if they are the wrong lyrics, don't you think the analysis by a major publication is at least worth mentioning, even with a footnote noting the correct lyrics? And I am placing emphasis on the two of you to discuss because if you two revert me and I post a message on the talk page and neither of you respond to it, then nothing is being accomplished. –Chase (talk / contribs) 23:22, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
It's sourced on the article, clearly you haven't looked hard enough. And no, I don't think citing wrong information and a misinterpretation about wrong information, no matter who it is by, is worth including, because hey, it's wrong! It's misleading for readers to reader something that isn't factually true and gives off the wrong information. I guarantee that people reading it will edit the article and change the word to "ride", then the sentence won't make sense. For once, take a back seat, and don't put peoples backs up any more than they already are. We made it clear in our edit summaries why we reverted. it's pretty clean cut and simple to understand. Didn't think I'd have to post yet another essay-length response to yet another one of your issues that you won't let go out like a dog with a bone.  — ₳aron 23:31, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Could you point out where it's sourced? I do not see the phrase "hot ride" in the article.
Before we even continue with this debate about right/wrong lyrics, you need to start by providing multiple sources that support your "hot ride" lyric to counter the RS claim. Until then, the "hot guy" lyric is assumed correct since I have not seen a reliable source claiming otherwise. That is issue #1, after that's resolved we can go from there. –Chase (talk / contribs) 23:51, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
In the official lyrics link at the bottom of the article.... Where it is for all song articles.... I don't need to source the correct lyrics. The RS reviewer is the one who got it wrong. I don't need to prove he is wrong. That's not what Wikipedia is about. Seriously, I can't be dealing with you or you pathetic issues. It's wearing very thin now, and everyone is tired of it.  — ₳aron 08:46, 11 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I know that Rolling Stone is a respected musical source, however, sometimes even the best can make their mistakes (at the end of the day we are all human beings). I think the best is to exclude it, because there are other versions of the lyric too like "hot ride", "hot pie" and obviously, "hot guy" which is totally non-sense and ridiculous. For example, Musicnotes.com thinks it's a "hot pie", Metro Lyrics (which is an official lyric provider for Wikipedia) has the correct lyric "hot ride". As a result of this, I think the best is to exclude the quote (one sentence missing won't make the article less worthy). — Tomíca(T2ME) 10:50, 11 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
Exactly.  — ₳aron 12:13, 11 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Confused sentence edit

What does this mean? "Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky the video positively, commenting on the video's simplistic theme, noting it makes it seem "as if Rihanna is speaking directly to you, the viewer, and she is your one and only amid swallowing rolling, beautiful, swallowing landscapes." Is there a word or two missing? Graham Beards (talk) 14:02, 27 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Europop vs. Dance edit

I can see in the history and recent edits that there have been some disagreements between anonymous editors on the genre that this song falls under. From my personal knowledge, I would be inclined to indicate the genre as Dance, however others may have other information contributing to the idea of indicating it as Europop. This disagreement needs to be sorted now. –JustAnIng (Talk) 14:38, 7 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
