Talk:Ogura Hyakunin Isshu

I believe this must have been intended as a simple redirect edit

- I will look to repair to avoid loss of the valuable redirect.

The collection in English at the major web resource is indeed "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu" so the redirect is valuable for English WP

No, you misunderstand. The redirect must be deleted because Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is the correct name for the work, and so the article should be moved here. elvenscout742 (talk) 03:35, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
To clarify, the redirect is not useful -- it is in the way. Redirects are useful when they are a common name of the topic but for whatever reason the article cannot be given that name. The name of the work in both Japanese and English is Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, and the article needs to be moved here. In order to this, this redirect page should have been deleted, but it appears to have been derailed by a silly misunderstanding. elvenscout742 (talk) 07:25, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I accidentally pressed ENTER when I meant to press BACKSPACE and saved my edit in the middle of writing the summary. I have reverted the removal of the speedy deletion tag. This move is entirely uncontroversial. Shiplett's comment above shows that he agrees with the move. Ogura Hyakunin Isshu is the primary title as discussed in reliable English-language sources. Therefore, the removal of the speedy deletion tag was in itself in poor form. If anyone has a problem with this, delete the tag on this page and post your argument at Talk:Hyakunin Isshu#Requested move. But the move is uncontroversial, and I would honestly prefer if you would contact me on my talk page if you want me to tell you about the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, where it got its name, etc. General discussions like that are general not appropriate for article talk pages. elvenscout742 (talk) 08:20, 19 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

I do not object. Thanks for clarifying. G. Robert Shiplett 14:38, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Date of first English translation edit

Tuttle Publishing, a respected publisher of Japanese and Oriental works, claims that the the original English translation of Ogura Hyakunin Isshu was performed by F. V. Dickens, and was published in 1865. This claim appears in the Publisher's Forward to the 1965 edition of The Magic Carpenter of Japan with 70 full-page woodcuts by Hokusai, published by Charles E. Tuttle Co., the original name of Tuttle Publishing. The text of this claim appears as follows:

F. V. Dickens, the translator of THE MAGICAL CARPENTER OF JAPAN, first came to Japan with the British Navy in 1861. He studied Japanese. largely by himself, while working at the British Naval Hospital in Yokohama, and by 1865 had had his translation of Hyakunin-issu published in London. It was the first Japanese literary work published in English.
