Seems to have been edited in (twice) by anon editor 89.241.57.161, and the second time (1 March) it wasn't spotted. Changing it to read, "since 1996 he has been the senior presenter..." Jheald 08:09, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Nik Gowing lead presenter??

The title of lead presenter exists nowhere in the BBC apart from that adopted by Nik Gowing and bestowed by Nik Gowing

Estuary English

A 22 May 2008 edition of his programme shows that he occassionally spoke with 'Estuary English'. For instance, he showed a glottal stop when pronuncing 'Iranian waters'. If you are interested in his accent, you can find out that the accent in 1997 (reporting on Diana's death) and that of these days might be slightly different. Finefir2001 (talk)

Story of little sleep

I met Nik Gowing the other day, we were both speaking at the same event. I quickly read his biography while we were in the green room and asked him about the "41.5 seconds" claim we had in the aritcle - it sounded absurd to me and I thought it might be vandalism. He laughed and said "41.5 minutes" and "can you quote me on that?" So I changed it. Now that I had a few minutes more to study the situation, I have tried to find a proper source but can't find one. I think the story is relevant to his biography, and true. But finding a source, while not urgent, is surely something that should be done at some point. I have tried and will try some more (including by emailing him to ask if he knows a published version of the story).--Jimbo Wales (talk) 11:50, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

The 41.5 minutes claim can be found in the earliest version of the article. It was changed to 41.5 seconds by an apparent vandal edit in November 2009, [1]; vandalism that has then remained in place for almost two years. I'll also remove the dig about Oxfam shops that was added at the same time. Jheald (talk) 17:10, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

Correction: the original version of the article (July 2006) said "reportedly only having had 40 minutes sleep". [2]. This was changed to the dubiously precise "41.5 minutes sleep" by an IP edit in August 2007 [3], which also added a middle name, "Keith", and edited in snide barb that he "called himself" the senior presenter on BBC World (which had previously also been added in March 2007, again by an IP edit, but had subsequently been reverted. [4]). The middle name "Keith" may be accurate -- it appears that Mr Gowing is listed as a director of the Hay Festival with this middle name: [5].

The Internet Archive's copy of the BBC profile of Mr Gowing from 2006 [6], which was originally given as the sole external source/link, does not contain the "40 minute" claim. But it may have been current in something else accessible at the time. Jheald (talk) 14:34, 12 September 2011 (UTC)
