other details edit

She appears to not have married, and lived in Townsend Road, Enderby. [1]

Enderby Heritage Society info edit

I received the following from The Enderby Heritage Society[2]

She was very well known in the village. Fran Andrews gave a talk on her as she visited her as a child and has a couple of drawings that Mary did especially for her. A few Enderby residents went to the house sale after she died. Fran’s family rented farm land from the Sloane family I think.
We are still gathering information on Mary. We are now in touch with a great niece which has been interesting. I think her great nephew still lives at 8 Hammersmith Terrace too. Mary is buried in Enderby Church yard with the rest of her family. She died in Ava Nursing Home, Ratcliffe Road, Leicester 30 Nov 1961. The grave stone gives 1960 but this is incorrect for some reason (more of an obelisk really).
Only recently have we been given a photograph of her when she was young (see attached). We were able to date it quite specifically as the photography studio only lasted for a year or so.
She was born 10 Dec 1867 in Leicester (I can’t find evidence that she was born in Enderby). She was the 2nd eldest of 6 children of John Sloane (an Irish Doctor from County Down who worked at the Leicester Infirmary) He is mentioned in many papers regarding the hospital. The mother was Sarah Stretton from Leicester. I think she was more likely born at their home on Welford Road (which is still standing).
We believe Mary’s father bought the house and land at Enderby as a “holiday” place away from Leicester. You say in the article that Enderby was a town. It is officially now but when Mary was there it was very much a village. Mary did “retire” back to Enderby and lived at Sloane House until just before she died.
We also know she attended Belmont House school as we have school photos. She wrote an essay for a book on the Belmont that I have copies of if you would like to see them.
We are still collecting info about her works. We have photos of some regarding Frame Work Knitters and cottages in Enderby and bits & pieces I’ve collected over time. The Leicestershire Art Gallery has some paintings / drawings in storage and we are in the process of getting access to them as they are not on display anywhere.
