No mention of mothers background -- Semi-protected edit request on 14 December 2014 edit

Marcus' mother Alana – pronounced with a long sound for the middle a – is of mostly German descent. She spent early years in Alaska.

Typical anti-white racism by omitting that his mother's white. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.22.169.66 (talk) 17:27, 14 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • White person here (never thought I'd have to say that) - how is it racist? I'm not even a liberal - how is this anti-white? Are you trying to demonstrate that he's only half-Polynesian or half-Hawaiian and that the claims of being the first poly- heisman winner are undeserving? That would seem to be the racism if there were any.==v/r - TP 20:15, 14 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Conference and School Records edit

Why is it that the school record is not recorded if it's already in the conference record? What if the school change conferences? Would the record while in the old conference count in the new conference? I would think not. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.91.45.231 (talk) 22:32, 1 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Middle names edit

I've removed all mentions of his middle names for the time being. Let's find some highly reliable sources that agree on what his actually are, and then we can readd them with the sources so that other editors know what is reliably sourced, and we don't have to put up with know-nothing IPs showing up and claiming contradictory names all the time, and they can just be ignored. Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 21:42, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Here's what I've found so far:

  1. From his Titans Online bio page: "Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota"
  2. From The Tennessean: "Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota"
  3. From CBS Sports: "Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota"
  4. From Paul Kuharsky on Twitter: "Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota"

I found no "reliable" sources for "Marcus Ardel Tafuna Taulauniu Mariota", except the Titans Twitter feed here. That settles it for me. Any one against readding "Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota"? - BilCat (talk) 22:06, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

@HickoryOughtShirt?4:, you added the second Twitter source here. Did you find any mentions of "Tafuna" from other reliable sources? Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 22:18, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

@BilCat: No I just found the twitter one (I found some Reddit threats but obviously those don't count). I agree this is a problem and I thank you for doing such intense research. I saw the IPs edit and just searched the name and added a ref. I agree that your many sources prove more reliable. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 22:30, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
No worries, and it wasn't meant as a criticism. I'll add back "Marcus Ardel Taulauniu Mariota" with the sources now. I assume "Tafuna", the name of a village in Samoa", may be part of a Samoan naming custom, and perhaps Marcus uses it in some circumstances but not others. I have no clue otherwise. - BilCat (talk) 22:35, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@HickoryOughtShirt?4: Thanks for adding the ref on Matt Mariota. I intended to do it after adding the other refs, but by the time I was done adding them, I was ready for a break. - BilCat (talk) 01:06, 8 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
@BilCat: Haha, no worries. I feel like I'm getting Carpal tunnel with all my editing so I feel you. HickoryOughtShirt?4 (talk) 01:20, 8 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

WP:CRYSTAL violation edit

The newest edit added to this article, indicating that Mariota will sign with the Raiders and is expected to back up Derek Carr, is a clear violation of WP:CRYSTAL and WP:RSBREAKING, as Mariota cannot even officially sign with the team until tomorrow at 4PM eastern. Rather than discuss the edit after I reverted, the user making the edit threatened to have me blocked and immediately reverted my edit with little to no explanation in their edit summary. @Tonto01: Breaking news is not reliable. There's no hurry, as a formal annoucement is generally made by a named team official if he does sign. You can refer to WP:SPORTSTRANS for suggestions on how to handle this. Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 03:37, 18 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Inaccuracy with High School Track and Field performances edit

The end of the third paragraph under early life states that "At the 2011 HHSAA T&F Championships, he earned fourth-place finishes in both the 200-meter dash (23.41 s) and the long jump (20 ft, 7 in), while also placing tenth in the 100-meter dash event at 11.63 seconds. He also ran the second leg on the St. Louis 4 × 100 m relay squad, helping them capture the state title with a time of 42.83 seconds." This is inaccurate, since the source provided for this information, "https://hi.milesplit.com/meets/92749-2011-ilh-track-and-field-championship/results/156941/raw#.Xz6pM5NKg_U", gives the results for the 2011 ILH championship results (a lower-level league within the HHSAA) rather than the HHSAA (Hawaii state-level) championship. The actual results for the 2011 HHSAA T&F Championships can be found here: "https://www.sportshigh.com/sports/track_field/schedule_results/2010-2011/HHSAA" and "https://www.sportshigh.com/sports/track_field/schedule_results/2010-2011/HHSAA_final", and they show that Mariota only participated in prelims and did not participate in any individual finals. This info should either be deleted or corrected. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kevin678 (talkcontribs) 16:51, 20 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Neovu79: I had protected the page earlier because of unsourced edits and subsequent reverts. Otherwise, I had no opinion on the content. You can refer to WP:SPORTSTRANS for guidance. Regards. —Bagumba (talk) 00:40, 14 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
