age? edit

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Special:Contributions&target=ip:ID1152340546 I found this link but I'm not sure how reliable it is. Anyone know? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.147.240.137 (talk) 01:45, 12 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wiki-answers would not be considered a reliable source. I cannot find any reliable source for a date of birth or even the year. The closest is a Wall Street Journal article which refers to the subject as being 28 years old, and was writen around the time of the Haitian Earthquake. Based on that, she would have been born around 1982.THD3 (talk) 18:07, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Additional sources for the DOB: Per the linked article [1] "Astanova was picked to play the National Anthem at the White House’s Fourth of July concert, one day after her 36th birthday." The date of said article is January 15, 2019, and per this source [2] the date of the concert was July 4, 2018. There are doubtless other sources which can confirm the date of Astanova's appearance at the White House. 2018 minus 36 is 1982, thus Astanova was born in 1982.THD3 (talk) 12:08, 13 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Tags edit

I have added a peacock tag to this article. Most of it reads like a press release, and verbiage like "a star of the Classical Superstars Fantasy Concert...historical performance on the famed Steinway concert grand piano of Vladimir Horowitz" isn't encyclopedic.THD3 (talk) 17:36, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have also added a request for primary sources. It appears that every source listed in the references can be traced back to the subject or her management.THD3 (talk) 18:24, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Footnote #3 (a press release) doesn't even contain the quote ascribed to it. 75.34.176.190 (talk) 23:48, 15 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Birth name? edit

Surely her birth name isn't Valentina Lisitsa as the infobox states? pgbrown (talk) 11:58, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Looks like a prank. In any case, I've deleted the infobox per Wikipedia:WikiProject Classical music#Biographical_infoboxes.THD3 (talk) 12:28, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Removed categories for "record producer"/changed to recording artist edit

Her categories included record producer-related but there are no citations or information provided in the article to verify her experience as a record producer. Being a recording artist is not the same as the title "record producer".

If she does have experience/credits as a record producer, please re-write it into the article with citations. If she was co-producer on her albums, please designate as such (with citations). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Actaudio (talkcontribs) 06:56, 12 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Birth date edit

I see we have multiple sources for 1982+-1. Where is the month and day verified? --Hipal/Ronz (talk) 00:37, 7 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

What sources are used for 1982? Every source I've found is dodgy, including the Rolling Stone article, which was written by a political journalist. JSFarman (talk) 21:18, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Year of birth edit

Can editors comment on the reliability of the proposed source: https://hauteliving.com/2013/11/center-stage-lola-astanova%E2%80%99s-inspiring-rise-ussr-carnegie-hall/421331/ ? --Hipal/Ronz (talk) 04:40, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

I don't consider Haute Living a reliable source, especially when Rolling Stone is available: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/lola-astanova-trump-779405/ - using the concert's date (4 July 2018 - according to multiple sources) and the statement in the third paragraph of the Rolling Stone article that Astanova played "at the White House’s Fourth of July concert, one day after her 36th birthday" her birth date can be easily found. pgbrown (talk) 12:19, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
And we have multiple better confirming 1982 in Talk:Lola_Astanova#age?. --Hipal (talk) 01:21, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree with both previous comments, Haute Living is NOT a reliable source and there ARE multiple reliable sources which give a birth year of 1982. Although one wishes to assume good faith, it has become obvious that JPS1965 is a single purpose account - possibly connected to the article's subject, and should be banned for trolling and deliberate misinformation.THD3 (talk) 02:47, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Comment edit

One thing about this article is that there is a certain amount of namedropping. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:51, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

This is true, although I don't know if namedropping violates WP:BLP. But it reminds me of the story about the critic who attacked Liszt in print, only to receive a letter from the composer, stating that he was happy the critic was able to use Liszt's fame to make a name for himself. In any case, my experience with these articles is the more hyperbole there is, the less noteworthy the subject actually is.THD3 (talk) 13:56, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
As long as it's well sourced, it's probably not a BLP problem, but guidance like WP:PROPORTION and WP:BLOATED can be relevant. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:11, 19 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Russian-American, or just Russian? edit

Has Astanova become an American citizen, and is there any reliable sourcing to indicate that? If not, she should not be considered Russian-American, just Russian.MisterCSharp (talk) 13:13, 23 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Semi-Protect request edit

Given the efforts by a couple of single-purpose accounts, maybe it's time to restrict this page from being edited by all but experienced editors.MisterCSharp (talk)

I agree. It's been going on for over a year now, looking at the edit history. pgbrown (talk) 12:31, 8 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Agree. Edit history over the past year has primarily been DOB changes.THD3 (talk) 11:19, 9 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Birth date and Uzbek edit

The New York Times reports that she was born in 1986. NYT is the paper of record. She was born in Uzbekistan according to multiple sources. She is Uzbek. Referring to her as Russian diminishes her nationality. JSFarman (talk) 20:55, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sources now used are a Rolling Stone political story and China Daily. See: WP:RSP. Rolling Stone political stories are red list. China JSFarman (talk) 05:00, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Daily is considered only marginally reliable. My solution would be agree to disagree and delete her age altogether but do what you will. JSFarman (talk) 18:43, 7 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Let's get a list together of potential sources. Listing multiple reported dates is an option if the references support it. --Hipal (talk) 03:46, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
The NYTimes ref is a warmed-over press release. --Hipal (talk) 03:48, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I usually don't question the New York Times, but I should have read that story more closely. It's pretty fluffy. I will look for more sources. JSFarman (talk) 05:00, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
The Rolling Stone ref looks fairly good. Once we have a list, maybe we run them all through WP:RSN. --Hipal (talk) 19:17, 13 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
