Talk:List of independent wrestling promotions in the United States

Deletionist tripe edit

I needed to know what wrestling promotions are nearby Memphis, TN, and this was the only reliable and useful source I can find. Of course a deletionist comes along and wants to delete it. "Some promotions fail WP:N." Well, no shit, that's why it's on this list instead of having one sentence standalone articles. We'd all rather have the promotions on a single article instead of in standalones. I'm completely against this article being nominated for deletion. This information is necessary and WP:IDONTKNOWIT is NOT a valid reason for deletion. Vodello (talk) 19:55, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

It's not notable. And if this is the only source, then there is no source and it should be deleted. Wikipedia is not a primary source for anything. It relies on other sources and those sources must be reliable. What you would rather have does not equal what WP is all about - and believing something is necessary falls into the same category. Proposal for deletion edit

Could you specify under what criteria this article qualifies under Wikipedia:NOTDIR? This list is hardly an attempt to list every independent promotion that has ever existed. There have been literally thousands of independent promotions in the United States in the last 20 years. This list contains a little over 200 and is essentially a well-referenced listing of notable promotions Wikipedia "should" have an article on.

You also claim this list "includes a number of promotions that fail the test under WP:N". If so, which ones? If there are promotions on the list that you feel are aren't notable then why not simply remove them? I contend that there are a significant number of independent promotions on this that are notable, especially given many of these already have articles on Wikipedia, and that a listing of such promotions is a perfectly legitimate encyclopedic topic. I'd be happy to address any concerns you have about this list and hope you will take the time to respond here instead of taking this straight to AFD. 71.184.34.16 (talk) 19:57, 7 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Firstly, all the promotions that don't have WP articles are not notable. You have to prove that each of them are. The ones that do have articles are already covered for in the List of Wrestling Promotions page - so this is unneeded double handling. This is heading straight for AfD on the grounds that you have failed to address the concerns expressed in the prod. I'll address WP:NOTDIR on the next edit. !! Section 4 of WP:NOTDIR is what is being violated here. This is a directory, and that is not encyclopaedic. !! Justa Punk !! 11:00, 8 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Removal of non-notable entries edit

Criteria for inclusion edit

This article just underwent a major cleanup per WT:PW#List of independent wrestling promotions in the United States to remove non-Wikipedia notable entries which had been added over the years. However, much of what was removed was recently re-added by a couple of IP editors. I've reverted these back to the last stable version here post cleanup since it seems to be a good starting point to move forward. Some of the entries add by IP 173.162.220.17 were supported by citations, but once again they don't appear to be Wikipedia notable as organizations in their own right and the sources cited to appear to more trivial mentions that actual significant coverage supporting inclusion. Pinging MPJ-DK, HHH Pedrigree, NotTheFakeJTP and Lee Vilenski for input here, but it seems the most basic criteria for inclusion is for the organization to have either (1) an existing stand-alone Wikipedia article written about it or (2) be the subject of WP:SIGCOV in independent relibale sources which could justify such an article being written if one didn't already exist. Personally, I think that simple mentions that an organization held or participated in an event in local papers, etc. or links to official website should, as is common per WP:NCORP, be treated as primary sources or trivial mentions; however, there might be certain sources specific to pro-wrestling (publications, websites, databases, etc.) that are generally considered accepted as reliable sources for this kind of thing. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:56, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Pretty much. This has been a haven for WP:FANCRUFT for a long time. It should really conky contain clearly distinct notable subjects, and not just a list of every brand new promotion that begins. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:43, 21 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Inclusion on red links and non-Wiki articles edit

This article may as well be deleted as the criteria for inclusion is apparently just promotions with Wiki article, making it effectively a category. Per WP:AOAL "[Lists] can include unlinked items [...] can include entries which are not sufficiently notable to deserve their own articles"). And per WP:DOAC, "[A category] does not support other forms of tracking, such as adding red links. (Red links are useful as gap indicators and as task reminders to create those articles.)" Was it possible some of the red links violated WP:REDNO? Certainly, but the answer isn't to be a deletionist, rather just unlink them. Just because it isn't notable for its own article doesn't mean its not notable for inclusion on this list. The section above titled "Removal of non-notable entries" cites WP:STAND as their criteria for removing red links. Nowhere in the policy does it say anything about not including red links. --Brian Halvorsen (talk) 21:54, 29 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

We include only promotions with article because... well, we have to put the line somewhere. Most of the red link I deleted were no notable, independent promotions. Near WP:FANCRUFT. Since everyone can create his own wrestling promotion, most of them will be no notable. According to cagematch, in America there is 1279 active wrestling promotions. --HHH Pedrigree (talk) 15:23, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
