Re: Copyright question

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The Body Press does not appear to have been published with a copyright notice. The second image, however, looks to me like a collection of images from different sources. I'm not sure, but it doesn't look to be from 1960. Instead my guess is a historian collected the images from old newspapers. Not sure though. I'd say the best thing to do is look for the images in newspaper archives. You'd get higher resolution images that way too. Most newspapers, with the exception of the big ones, were published without copyright notices pre-1978. If it is listed it's usually where they name the publisher and editors. Sometimes wire photos came with a copyright notice. Massachusetts doesn't appear to have a good free newspaper archive post-1923. You may want to try https://nyshistoricnewspapers.org/ (although the image quality isn't the best). As a rule I don't use images from newspapers.com because when I've had issues with pay sites claiming copyright on images I've uploaded and suspending my account. I guess they consider the scan of the copyright free material to be a completely new work, which I don't think would hold up legally.
