Talk:List of aviation museums

Scope edit

Scope is going to become a problem here unless it's carefully defined somewhere. I've just added quite a few museums from around the world based on this excellent website. This was a very interesting exercise for the purpose of learning about the wide variety of collections and institutions that might be thought of as an aerospace museum.

A few suggestions based on this experience:

Major institutions:

  • Any national museum of aviation, space, or air force, naval aviation, or army aviation museum – include; these are the cornerstones of this list!
  • Any national museum of science, technology, transport, or national military museum – include if we can verify that it has any aerospace content at all. I'm presuming that anything that we can confirm for an institution of this type will be the "tip of the iceberg" and that the institution probably holds far more, even if in the form of archives.
  • I suggest that these museums should be included even if the museum is not regularly accessible to the public. For example, the air force museums of many smaller nations are often located on military bases and not generally open to the public.

Smaller institutions (publicly owned or operated by a foundation):

  • Any museums with a predominantly aerospace theme, including those dedicated to an aerospace engineer, designer, aviator, astronaut, or aerospace manufacturer – include
  • Museums without a predominantly aerospace theme – include only if they have "significant" aerospace content. For the museums I listed from aviationmuseum.eu, I used an arbitrary cutoff of five airframes. For example, this meant that an automobile museum in Italy that had three ex-military aircraft displayed on its roof didn't make this list... My local museum has four complete aircraft on display, plus a few engines. I wouldn't list it here either.
  • I suggest that these museums should be included even if the museum is not regularly accessible to the public. For example, the internal museums of corporations may not generally open to the public but may have significant collections.

Private institutions and collections

  • As for the category above, but include only if regularly accessible to the public. That is, the collection has set regular opening times and is not "by appointment only"

Do these suggestions sound reasonable? --Rlandmann (talk) 09:23, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Actually yes it does! - Ahunt (talk) 13:55, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Links to this page edit

I have added a link to this list page from Template:Canadian Aviation Museums. - Ahunt (talk) 14:18, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

OMAR Mine Museum edit

I just re-added this museum, based on this account of their collection, which says that the museum has 10 different aircraft types on display (their Su-7 is pictured), plus a variety of air-dropped ordnance. I think that qualifies as a significant aerospace collection. --Rlandmann (talk) 18:16, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Okay - the Wikipedia article really needs to be updated with that info! It says it is just a mine museum! - Ahunt (talk) 18:49, 11 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

United States edit

The US seems to have the lion's share of the world's aerospace museums; is there any sense in breaking this very long section into subsections by state? --Rlandmann (talk) 22:01, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

That would be good. - BillCJ (talk) 23:55, 25 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would go as far and making it a new page. There are some big organizations too, like CAF. --Flightsoffancy (talk) 16:45, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I don't see any need to do that at this stage and I think we have most US museums listed now. - Ahunt (talk) 18:27, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Aerospace Museum in the UAE edit

We have an aerospace museum in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE) called Al Mahattah Museum. I have written about that museum in my website. Can I create a page here and add it to the list?

Link to my article: http://av8radi.com/2013/05/30/al-mahatah-museum-sharjah-u-a-e/

Also at the end of my article you find links to the official website

Sure, if you have references as per WP:RS. - Ahunt (talk) 01:12, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Absolutely the right kind of topic for a Wikipedia article and a link for this list. Some interesting aircraft there in very good condition. The link to the official website is giving an error for me. I could write a basic article from it. I'm guessing that the museum is at the former RAF Sharjah site which is different to the Sharjah International Airport site? Cheers. If the images on your website are your own it would be very useful to upload them to Wikimedia Commons, they could then be used in the museum article. Very happy to help if this is complicated at first (just click on 'floats by' in my signature). Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 21:33, 22 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Defunct Aerospace Museums edit

Should we include aviation museums that are no longer in existence? For example, the Champlin Fighter Museum or Movieland of the Air Museum. I don't think there are enough of them to merit a separate list, but it might work as an additional, separate section on the page after the listing by location. Of course, the other option is to just go ahead and list them along with the currently operating museums, but that might cause confusion. —Noha307 (talk) 03:45, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

We have articles on aircraft and military units that no longer exist and I would say that museums that no longer exist would be equally of historical interest as long as refs cane be found to meet WP:N. I would add that if they are added to this list that they should be noted on the list as "defunct" or similar. - Ahunt (talk) 15:27, 7 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Nationaal Militair Museum edit

the Militaire Luchtvaart Museum and the Legermuseum in Delft were brought together in 2014 and fed together and are now part of Nationaal Militair Museum Wessel1512 (talk) 22:52, 19 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

The Militaire Luchtvaart Museum and the Legermuseum articles both need to be unified before we can change this list. Your edits just turned a blue link into a red link and that will stop readers from finding it. - Ahunt (talk) 23:11, 19 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

but it does not exist anymore. and I just want to give the right information. ps I'm already working on the wiki article though by my dyslexia it takes a bit longer [1] Wessel1512 (talk) 08:49, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

It's fixed I've made an article for it [2] Wessel1512 (talk) 11:30, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. - Ahunt (talk) 12:47, 20 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Do we want to add some sort of Tag for flying museums? edit

It would be great if you could filter or search by museums that are on an airfield you can fly in to. For example, College Park is on the airport and you can walk through the FBO to the museum. Pilot1st (talk) 14:28, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

It would but would bust WP:NOTGUIDE. I've flown into museums myself many times, some give free entry after paying the landing fee. There are complications such as PPR ( Prior Permission Required) and NOTAM checking etc which fall firmly in the task of flight planning.
Military airfields with museums rarely allow civil aircraft to fly in, in the UK expensive Crown indemnity insurance is required (to cover damage to aircraft and buildings in the event of an accident).
Museum websites that are located at an airfield usually explain their arrival procedures and requirements, each Wikipedia aircraft museum article should have the official website listed twice, once in the infobox top right and again at the bottom in the External links section. If no website exists then there might be information in Jeppesen or similar flight reference guides. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 14:55, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
WP:NOTGUIDE. Fair enough. I just wanted a way to filter by on field vs. not. Pilot1st (talk) 15:19, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
What might be helpful is to enable 'Popups' (Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups) in your gadget settings. This shows a preview of the lead section of an article just by hovering over the link. Museum articles adjacent to airfields usually start 'Museum X is an aviation museum based at Y airport'. You can also browse categories by location (such as Category:Aerospace museums in England) where the popup feature also works. Nimbus (Cumulus nimbus floats by) 17:17, 5 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
