This article was compiled by reviewing existing articles in the category "Category:21st-century women artists" over the course of about six months in 2021. It is a logical extension of the article List of 20th-century women artists.
The criteria is birth in 1970 or later. Of those articles, emphasis was placed on collections, exhibitions and authority control data in wikidata. The original editor of the List of 20th-century women artists notes on that talk page "References will be checked, significance will be considered. A badly-written Wikipedia article will not disqualify an artist, but an unreferenced puff piece full of opinion and advertising words probably will".
Because this list is dependent on birth date, biographies with no reliable source for year of birth may be removed. Most encyclopedias and museum websites include the artist's birth year and if a verifiable birth date can't be included it speaks to the artist's notability.
