Ponderosa edit

Shouldn't it be listed about the first ever Ponderosa opened in Kokomo in 1968, if you go to the "Ponderosa/Bonanza Steakhouse" page on wikipedia it says that on there, also on the Ponderosa page it has the sources that would be nessesary for it to be added here —Preceding unsigned comment added by Dustin4528354 (talkcontribs) 01:13, 14 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Brutal cull edit

I chopped out a lot of material that was not appropriate for an encylopedia/almanac. Road construction projects, shopping center store lists, and "minor parks" do not belong here. This is stuff that belongs on a chamber of commerce Web site or personal Web site. --Tysto 07:07, 7 March 2006 (UTC) HELL0? First mcdonalds diner in Kokomo Indiana in 2000? O RLY?Reply

Or first pneumatic rubber tire? Not hardly, by about fifty years and 3000+ miles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.215.2.193 (talk) 07:44, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fred Rogers edit

Fred Rogers, Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, was on the list of people who had lived in Kokomo. I've found no reference to him living in Kokomo, Indiana. Sorry.

Stainless Steel edit

Reason for invention contradicts reason given in the entry for Elwood Haynes

Also, Elwood Haynes not mentioned in article "Stainless Steel" as an inventor of that substance. Most information points to Mr. Haynes being the first to use stainless steel to craft dinnerware. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.215.2.193 (talk) 07:36, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

In external links one of the links is not right edit

Kokomo IN Real Estate - Howard Co Real Estate points to http://www.athomeinkokomo.com/ which is just some REALTOR'S® website. It should point to http://raci.org which is the website of the Howard County Board of REALTORS® which has the entire MLS database online. I'm not able to edit this page so someone more important than me will have to do it.

Not Sure if reference is for Kokomo, IN - But I recall an old (1939) Movie called The Kid from Kokomo. Seems it would have more relevance than a cartoon. --Caveman.otr (talk) 15:23, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

One other movie reference I can think of is in the (1989) movie Assassination, if someone can verify. Charles Bronson & the First Lady get off a passenger train, in a small town with mountains in the background.. I believe that town was referrd to as Kokomo..--Caveman.otr (talk) 15:34, 25 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ryan White edit

Shouldn't there be a reference to the Ryan White business here? Maybe under KKK?SidiLemine 14:13, 17 September 2007 (UTC)---Reply

Check under "Famous Kokomo residents...I mean "Notable residents"...Baldwin91006 02:28, 18 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

  • Not good enough. There should be something in the history section of this article that talks about how intolerant Kokomo was toward Ryan White and how the majority of the town's citizens effectively forced White and his family out. Likewise, for the Wikipedia entry for the town of Cicero, Indiana, they can put down that they welcomed White and his family in with open arms. In Kokomo, only the staff of the local paper defended Ryan White. In Cicero, there was overwhelming acceptance of Ryan. This is a part of both towns' histories -- whether the current citizens of Kokomo like it or not -- and it should be detailed very specifically in their article writeups. 68.91.90.30 (talk) 06:27, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • I'm sorry, but the whole town was not out to get him. It may have seemed that way to the White family (the minority can seem like a majority if they are loud enough). The employees of Delco Electronics, where his mom worked, took up a collection for the family for their medical expenses. Most people in the town didn't pay very much attention either way. Maybe a majority of the town was indifferent, but a 40,000 mob with pitchforks and torches? No way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 167.112.135.3 (talk) 10:33, 15 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Nice going, guy. Not only did you proceed with writing a section that generalizes Kokomokians, characterizing them as all being ignorant redneck assholes, but you copied and pasted the whole thing from the Ryan White article, itself. Oh, and let's not forget about how you didn't even sign your name; only your IP section appears. Why don't you put your name on there? It seems to me that you have an agenda. Well, Wikipedia is generally a pretty dubious reference source, and it's (appropriately) considered to be the laughing-stock of the internet, but I will also say that it's not a place for people who have agendas or chips on their shoulders in which to vent. If you have an agenda, then I suggest that you write a book. It IS truly sad that some Kokomokians acted in an inappropriate, immature, goonish, moronic and barbaric way. But as the person who replied to you in the paragraph above told you, it wasn't the whole town. Generalizations such as the ones that you put in the article have no place in the article about Kokomo. The whole story is detailed in the Ryan White article (which, as I said, is an exact duplicate of what is seen in THIS article). Why not just have a link to the Ryan White article in the section that lists famous people from Kokomo? I don't feel that a detailed section about the Ryan White story belongs in this article, largely because it's already covered in the Ryan White article. I also feel that it takes up an inproportionate amount of space in the Kokomo article. Runt (talk) 03:34, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I have no intention of writing anything to this article, but I would point out that while he might have an agenda in adding Ryan White, I'm not convinced you don't have an agenda in keeping him out. Like it or not, that is something that Kokomo is known for. For it not even mentioned is a whitewash. Not saying I consider it important or should head the article, but it is a legitimate association with Kokomo. It is a shame, yes, and I'm sure many of the town's residents regret it ever happening, but nonetheless, it did. Compounding the infraction is the fact that you include Ryan White as a famous person from Kokomo, as if he were some favored son that Kokomo could point to, almost like an accomplishment. Ryan White, I'm afraid, is actually a serious black mark on the town's history. 24.160.82.185 (talk) 01:48, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Notable People edit

The Notable People from Kokomo is just getting out of hand with people who very few would ever consider famous. Unknown sports teams and musicians. Come on people. Just stick with a core list, it's getting out of hand. --74.132.94.122 (talk) 05:12, 17 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think that the list has gotten way out of hand (either again, in reference to the earlier statement, or never changed). I think it either needs to be cut down or removed and made its own page with a link on Kokomo's main page. I'm betting we can get rid of about 90% of these "notable" people. Any suggestions? (Rapierce (talk) 21:28, 23 January 2012 (UTC))Reply

Culture edit

I was reading over the article for Kokomo, and I was getting very bored with all the information about the "famous" people and all the information about having the firsts in different restaurant chains do not really say very much about the city. I was maybe suggesting some more information about the culture such as the Seiberlings, Elwood Haynes, Big Ben and the Sycamore Stump would be more suitable for an encyclopedia than having the first starbucks in a non municipal area. The section with all the external links would be a great place to start writing sections on the local culture and history, reference them. --Rapierce (talk) 20:23, 2 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

And yet we have zero proof of the claim about the song being about “a bar in Florida,” and “not about the town in Indiana.” You need to show proof via a reputable source instead of going around making unsubstantiated claims.AdG2K22 (talk) 02:16, 16 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

The Klan was a powerful force in Indiana and Kokomo, so I’ve added more material. I also left the estimate of the Melfalfa Park rally at 200,000 since all the sources I can find accept that number. Nicmart (talk) 16:09, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Palm Sunday Tornado edit

Someone made a change today to the bit in the history section about the Palm Sunday tornado. I called up the reference to verify it and much to my surprise there was nothing on Kokomo in the cited article. I will try to search, but web search for a reliable source for something that happened in the 60's is usually not too efficient. If I don't succeed, perhaps a local could trek to the library and cite the local paper? I tagged the info as dubious, but left it intact, as my personal recollection was that Kokomo did sustain some pretty heavy damage in that storm. It still should be properly cited. Thanks! Gtwfan52 (talk) 22:40, 7 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

I have referenced a different narrative from NOAA that did mention Kokomo, but a further reference to a local source would go a long way to justify the details, or possibly facilitate adding a few more. The only reference in the article I found was "Another formed near Middlefork, destroyed much of Russiaville and Alto and passed across the southern part of Kokomo, through Greentown, and into southern parts of Marion before dissipating near Arcana." Coverage from the local paper would be much more appropriate and detailed. Thanks again. Gtwfan52 (talk) 00:31, 8 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

"City of Firsts" edit

Would someone please purge this section of its complete & utter bullshit, or at least qualify it in terms of USAnian parochialist beliefs.

These inventions are associated with Kokomo:[9]

1894 – Elwood Haynes makes the first successful trial run of his "horseless carriage" on Pumpkinvine Pike, which is now Boulevard east of U.S.31.
1894 – The first pneumatic rubber tire was invented by D.C. Spraker at the Kokomo Rubber Tire Company.
1895 – The first aluminum casting was developed by William "Billy" Johnson from the Ford and Donnelly Foundry.
1902 – Kingston carburetor developed by George Kingston.
1906 – The first Stellite cobalt-base alloy was discovered by Elwood Haynes.
1912 – Stainless steel tableware was invented by Elwood Haynes as a response to his wife's desire for tableware that wouldn't tarnish.
1918 – The Howitzer shell, used in World War I, was created by the Superior Machine Tool Company.
1918 – The first aerial bomb with fins was first produced by the Liberty Pressed Metal Company.
1920 – The mechanical corn picker was created by John Powell.
1926 – Carl Molin developed Dirilyte golden-hued tableware.
1928 – The first canned tomato juice was created by Walter Kemp from Kemp Brothers Canning Company in response to a physician's need for baby food.
1938 – The first push-button car radio was created at Delco Radio Division of General Motors Corporation.
1941 – Globe American Stove Company manufactured the first all-metal life boats and rafts.
1947 – The first signal-seeking car radio was created by the Delco Radio Division of General Motors.
1956 - Delco Radio Division of General Motors produced a transistorized signal-seeking car (hybrid) radio, which used both vacuum tubes and transistors in its radio's circuitry. This transistorized car radio was available as an option on the 1956 Chevrolet Corvette car models.[30][31]
1957 – Delco Radio Division of General Motors produced an all-transistor car radio, as standard equipment for the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham car model.[32]

Additions to this page edit

People monitoring this page doesn't do a very good job and i refuse to waste my time editing things on here. So i think the following things need added: 1. A climate chart like most cities do showing the typical weather conditions you may find in Kokomo. 2. Corrections about the City-Line buses and how there is now 5 bueses, not 2. 3. A list of more stores under Entertainment. Old Navy, Best Buy, McDonalds, Arbys, Hot Topic, Chipotle, among other top stores should be listed, either that or no stores should be. 4. In the Transportation section when it mentions the US 31 bipass it should be add the current US 31 is going to be called Indiana State Road 931. sweepout (talk) 09:22, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

When the change to the highway name occurs, it will be changed in the article. Listing of stores in a mall is not appropriate per WP:NOTDIR. With malls, generally only the anchor stores are listed. Perhaps someone will add a climate chart. You are welcome to if you wish, but it must be referenced. Gtwfan52 (talk) 09:35, 25 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I did put anchor store, the current three stores listed doesnt have a special refrence so dont try to tell me Best Buy does. I dont know how to make a climate chart, but even if i did i wouldn't because you would probably try to delete it. I have enough stuff going on with my boyfriend fighting for his life in the hospital i really dont have time to dispute whether something is accurate or not when i clearly refrenced everything that needed and and all the information i put is accurate! You are welcome!!!! sweepout (talk) 01:45, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
(edit conflict)Excuse me, but how does a reference to a news paper that reads "<ref>[[Kokomo Tribune article about US 31 upgrade around Kokomo.]]</ref>" reference anything? The Kokomo Tribune has only published one edition ever and it only had one article in it? I left you instructions on your talk page as to how to properly cite a newspaper article. If you are unwilling to do that, that is not my problem. Further, your edit stated that the section was to become US 931, when this discussion, and everything I have read indicate that it is to become IN 931. I am sorry about your boyfriend, but that has no bearing on the problem here. You are not required to edit Wikipedia, but if you choose to, you need to do it accurately and reference things in a manor that they can be verified. If that is too much for you, then please just leave Wikipedia alone til your personal situation is better. Thanks. Gtwfan52 (talk) 04:25, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I found an official statement that the road will be named Indiana 931, so I added that to the article. I also found an article in the Kokomo Tribune in which a member of the group promoting the upgrading of all of US 31 between Indianapolis and South Bend to interstate standards referred (erroneously) to US 931 rather than Indiana 931.Indyguy (talk) 16:36, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Notable persons edit

I noticed that someone culled Tod Sloan from the "Notable Persons" section on the ground of lack of notability. My question is how a person who merits his own Wikipedia article and who has a biography published about him (by Yale University Press no less, a book which won the National Book Critics Circle Award) is not notable enough for Kokomo? And if having a Wikipedia article is not enough to warrant notability, then how is an obscure, former Christian punk group (with an unsourced Wikipedia article) or a circus performer who quit the Barnum Circus when she was 12 or a beauty pagent/reality TV contestant notable enough? AnthroMimus (talk) 22:07, 3 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

The circus performers were removed. If you do not think the Christian rock group's article shows sufficient notability, you are welcome to nominate it for deletion. As for Mr. Sloan, it would be helpful if we knew which of the three Tod Sloan's that have articles on Wikipedia you were talking about. I looked back a year and did not see him on this article at all, but I may have missed it. Attitude is not really helpful in a collaborative project such as Wikipedia. If you have concerns, please voice them in a way that doesn't sound like you feel whatever you perceive to be the problem to be other's "fault". You can fix it. That's why Wikipedia is called "The encyclopedia anyone can edit". It is also why the circus performers have been removed. I'll be glad to help, if you would kindly tell me what it is (specifically) that needs to be "fixed". Thanks. Gtwfan52 (talk) 01:30, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Gtwfan52, I appreciate the lecture. As for Mr. Sloan, his listing was deleted in the edit just before your last edit on 3 September 2013, and with the comment: "revert well-intentioned series of insertions of apparent non-notables." His Wikipedia article is under Tod Sloan (jockey). The circus performer (perhaps circus attraction would be better) I referred to, Nellie Keeler, remains a Kokomo "notable person." I don't care one way or the other who is included. My question is how culls are made under the guise of being "apparent non-notables" in light of the other individuals I mentioned. I hope that I have voiced this issue in a way that doesn't sound like I feel this issue to be someone else's "fault." AnthroMimus (talk) 04:59, 4 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of education edit

Why does it list county schools under Education in the Kokomo article? North Western, and Eastern need to be on Howard County, Indiana's page not here. Western covers Pine Valley and other parts of Kokomo, and Taylor covers an extinsive south eastern portion including Indian Heights so those can stay, but shouldn' the others go? Just checking other peoples opinion before i make changes, maybe possible all the systems touch the little bits of Kokomo's boundary? Jacobjimmy2000 (talk) 13:14, 22 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Cats Don't Dance reference edit

@Historianbuff: We are only supposed to include pop culture appearances if those appearances portray the town in any notable way or have significantly influenced how the town is perceived. From what I am reading in the entry you added, it does not seem like the film Cats Don't Dance has done either of those things, since it sounds like the town is only mentioned a few times in passing. If you have a reliable source that indicates the references in the movie have significantly influenced how people perceive the town, then, by all means, your addition is welcome. Otherwise, I am not convinced that it adds anything constructive to the article. --Katolophyromai (talk) 22:36, 7 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Katolophyromai pretty much summed up my point. My only addition would be the mere use of a community's name in a song, film, book, etc, informs the reader of nothing about the community. All authors have artistic license and can pick any name they choose. There are many reasons for an author to choose a place name, one of which is the way it sounds. Kokomo, like Kalamazoo and Winnemucca, get chosen frequently due to their lyrical sound. IPC sections should consist of media that was actually produced in the community, media that can add to one's knowledge of the community more than it does the knowledge of the media at hand, and namechecks where there are reliable sources for the author's artistic choice. Any other additions violate the pillar policy WP:NOTTRIVIA. John from Idegon (talk) 00:07, 8 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

The History section starts off with ...a list? edit

Does anyone else think this is unusual? I've never seen that in any other city article, and think it does not do the city's history any justice. I would propose that this list, which IS still valuable, might be a better fit as a subheading of Culture, since they are architecturally significant places that one might visit, in addition to being a part of the city's history. Unless there are objections, I can make this change. If there are objections, does anyone have a better idea? The status quo, in any event, does not work. 1980fast (talk) 05:57, 11 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Notable tornadoes edit

If we can't change the info heading for the 2016 tornado, I see no reason why we can't add wikilinks, to the "Notable tornadoes" section. While I understand that a wikilink should generally only appear once in any given article, it also says hat it can be helpful to readers if wikilinks are added to another section.
