Source: During the Second World War, the work was severely damaged. Jozef Israëls was Jewish, which members of the Dutch National Socialist Movement stated on his statue in the spring of 1943 and (August 10, 1946 Unveiling monument) It was the director of Municipal Cleaning, Mr. Koops, who immediately took charge of the shards. After the liberation, the restoration was started under the direction of van den Groninger sculptor S. W. Valk.
