Time frame of story

The start of this article says: 'this film....is set in the 1930's'. According to the plot section, the end of the film comes at the partition of Vietnam, which was in 1954. There is a discrepancy here.

This powerful film conveys a sense of the history of the time as well as the personal stories. Is it possible to identify events in the film as happening at particular points in history? It would be helpful and interesting if this is possible.

Interpretation of communism

Does the character of Camille actually "resolves to join the Communists to fight for her country's independence. She does not wish for her son to know the horror she has witnessed, and tells her mother that French colonialism is waning"? If so this is illogical, as the Communist rebellion caused far more "horror" than French rule, and supporting independence is not the same as supporting revolution or communism.125.237.105.102 (talk) 08:34, 21 December 2014 (UTC)
