Social distance

Maybe I should have said "inequality". When writing that half paragraph I was thinking of a passage from A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich about how the zek's head got cold when doing the gesture, but better that than getting punished for disrespecting a prison guard. Anyway it's cute the way you went around thanking contributors; after editing several thousand articles I no longer find time for such niceties. Too bad the photos in the commonscat mostly show something more like a hat wave than a hat tip as I used to do; else we would have an appropriate picture. Actually I still tip my hat every month or two, but only to women anymore, and not in winter. Have fun. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I had the impression that the term was acknowledgement for an intermediate referrer?

For instance, Michelle Malkin uses the term a lot. She will give credit to some blogger A for idea X (and a link), and then a hat tip to blogger B (or sometimes B and C) where (I think) she learned about blogger A and post/idea X from B. TCO (talk) 00:54, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

"Hat in hand" should be linked back & forth with the accompanying article, perhaps as a Rdr to a new section.
Headgear#Headgear etiquette, with its religious & political connections & connotations, should likewise. (And the Quaker term Hat honour for it -- used in rejecting it, with reasoning paralleling that of Plain speech -- likewise hints at roots neglected in the accompanying article that are both deeper and older (presumably in Feudalism), and more oppressive.

Journalistic Usage

The use of the term 'hat tip' for thanking readers for submitting ideas may have originated with cartoonist Jimmy Hatlo back in the 1920's. (See new article entry) Jdagius (talk) 03:36, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Origin of the gesture?
