I recall some mention somewhere of "poobah" being a derivative of the pbuh (peace be upon him) used for revered muslims. Can anyone verify this? --jskrzypek@gmail.com

Sim City 2000 edit

i think in Sim City 2000 in the news paper they mention the grand poobah (stuff like : Grand Poobah Trapped), should a reference be made to this in the artical (if you need a cite I'll take a wiz round the net for one). --Lwarf 02:01, 15 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sure why not, I think I remember there being some sort of a pun on the term grand poobah on Sesame Street, how about I add that? --Dans1120 17:08, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The Flintstones edit

How could the term "Grand Poobah" have been introduced by The Flintstones when it had already existed for the greater part of a century? --Dans1120 17:08, 9 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Poo-Bah" was the name of a character. "Grand Poobah" is a title. Do you have a cite for the title being used prior to the Flintstones?  Randall Bart   Talk  20:29, 4 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: "Also used to refer to Kanes Fist of the 55's"

What or who are "Kanes Fist" and "55's?" Could this be explained in the article or could a citation be added? Evan 156.99.27.197 (talk) 09:09, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
In the scrolling Photoshop CS2 Credits (Help > About Photoshop), someone named "Marc Pawliger" is described as "Grand Poobah of Management". I thought this was pretty funny and should be mentioned. Naoki (talk) 17:08, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
In Photoshop CC and Photoshop CS6, B. Winston Hendrickson is described as the "Photoshop Grand Poobah". At the time of writing, he is the "vice president of engineering for Adobe’s digital imaging products". http://www.photoshop.com/spotlights/winston-hendrickson

"Grog Strongjaw was given the title of "Grand Poobah de Doink of All of This and That" in Critical Role, a popular D&D web series, by Lord Percival Fredrickstein von Musel Klossowski de Rolo III of Whitestone. The title comes with no land and no money. According to Percy, a Grand Poobah can be referred to as "Hey you, over there," "Hey you guy," "Old Bean," or "Sweet Chestnut." Grog would often reference his title in the show despite it not actually giving him any legal power anywhere." I was told this needed significance but I gave just as much significance as other people did for other entries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whix100 (talkcontribs) 16:46, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

I would be happy to remove other such references if you don't think they are well cited or the citations don't clarify why they are WP:NOTEWORTHY. See also WP:TRIVIA. -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:59, 29 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm not asking for others to be removed. I'm wanting mine added. The Flintstones part says that there's a character with the name of Grand Poobah. The Howard Cunning ham post says that there was a Grand Poobah in that show. And there's a post saying that there's a rapper by the name of Grand Poobah. I'm wanting to add that a character on the biggest D&D web series has that title. But it keeps getting removed. What do I need to put to "prove it's significance." I tried modifying my post each time to "prove it's significance" or cite it properly but I kept getting the same response without anyone elaborating what was needed to get my post added to the page. --Whix100
The Flintstones and Happy Days were major long-running network TV shows (at a time when the 3 networks controlled nearly all viewers). The references to Grand Poobah in those shows were numerous and ongoing and involved the lead character of The Flintstones and a key supporting character in Happy Days. We cite sources that clearly explain the importance of these references in these TV shows.I removed the rapper from the article, since the reference does not verify that his name is related to this topic. In the case of Critical Role, a web series (with a WP article is so appallingly badly written that the WP league of proofreaders refused to edit it) with a far lower viewership than the viewership of The Flintstones and Happy Days, you added a bullet point that included two links to prohibited sources (wikis) and that cited the subject itself (a YouTube episode), which is not an acceptable independent source and, in any case, only shows that the character used the title, but does not explain the importance of the reference and is not adequate to show that Grog's title is related to the topic of this article. -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:40, 30 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Encyclopedia material? edit

This has already been transwikied to Wiktionary. I think it can be defined but it's not an encyclopedic topic. Mglovesfun (talk) 12:38, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not sure. Is the "transwiki-ing" up to date? Should we ask the folks at WP:TV or somewhere else where we can get more feedback on this? Certainly the term has been used in some very major entertainment media and I thought the mention of that was encyclopedic, although there really isn't all that much to say about it.... -- Ssilvers (talk) 19:52, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I would move to the article on G&S in Popular Culture. Marc Shepherd (talk) 20:14, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
OK, I've added the relevant info to the article that Marc Shepherd suggests, and we could redirect this article here. But I still wonder if you ought to kill this article with respect to its major-media references to the TV shows and other media? I think you ought to run this by WP:TV. Best regards, -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:43, 10 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
I think it could be kept as an encyclopedic term. I certainly came here looking to find out about the background of this term, so I think others would be interested as well. -- œ 06:44, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
I was interested, and this is twelve and a half years later. – AndyFielding (talk) 08:08, 13 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Remarkably, seven years after this point was legitimately raised, when the content was virtually identical to the current version, we've got editors claiming that the lack of activity above is some sort of consensus. So this will be dematerialising shortly unless Ssilvers (talk · contribs), who seems so keen on its continued existence, puts in the work to flesh out why one of ten million random turns of phrase in the English language is actually something more substantial. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 20:49, 13 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

I would not object to it being merged out. -- Ssilvers (talk) 06:16, 6 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
