Talk:Flame Nebula

Latest comment: 10 years ago by HairyDan in topic Is it anything to do with Alnitak?

"is near the easternmost star in Orion's Belt, Alnitak."

The article here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orion_(constellation)

suggests that Alnitak is on the left - ie, western - end of Orion's belt. Or have I misread that?

If you're looking at Orion from the Northern hemisphere you're generally facing south, so the left end is the eastern end. HairyDan (talk) 14:15, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Apparent magnitude edit

The app magnitude has been specified as +2. Is there a reference? — Preceding unsigned comment added by EPharaoh (talkcontribs) 16:45, 4 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Is it anything to do with Alnitak? edit

The article (and http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap990713.html) states that the star Alnitak is the source of UV causing the ionisation which makes the nebula glow, but it also says that the nebula is 900 to 1500 light-years away, while the article on Alnitak says the star is only 736 light years from Earth - in other words, they're nowhere near each other but just happen to be aligned as viewed from Earth. Also, http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap070202.html suggests that the UV source is probably a star which is hidden from us by dust.

Does anybody know which is correct? HairyDan (talk) 14:21, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I just found this: http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0303029 Could somebody please correct the article? I don't know how to do stuff like putting journal references in. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HairyDan (talkcontribs) 14:30, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
