There is a Wikipedia controversy on whether the parts of N14 within the London Borough of Barnet are properly known as Osidge, or are part of Southgate. My view is that both descriptions can and should coexist. Institutions, businesses and individuals in this area tend to regard themselves as living in Southgate, following the PO usage. However, there isn't any suggestion in the relevant Wikipedia debates that any part of Osidge is also in East Barnet.

The only possible reason for viewing this area as being in East barnet would be that the East Barnet parish boundaries once extended to the area which is now the Monkfrith estate. This is insufficient; the mediaeval church is no more a reliable arbiter of the names of locations than the Post Office is.

Hence, I'm deleting N14 from this page.

[1] This map clearly shows how the N14 boundary and the Barnet boundary do not match exactly. This is common throughout London and indeed the UK. Parts of East Barnet come under N14 postal district. MRSC 12:27, 9 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

You seem to be convinced that London areas are defined purely by the London borough boundaries, and not by local usage. This is simply not true: think of Highgate, for instance, which is split neatly between Camden and Haringey. I'd suggest that it comes down to which "high street" local residents identify with, although this is a difficult and very qualitative thing to judge.

East Barnet is a very specific area, not the eastern part of the Borough of Barnet. You're just going to have to trust local judgement on that.

A source for there being a large number of London locations whcih span boroughs? May I commend you to Multimap?

Or do you mean a source for the area of N14 in the LB of B being generally described as Southgate (which are legion) or strictly known as Osidge? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_N14

The end of East Barnet Road where it turns into Cat Hill, by the war memorial in East Barnet Village, is in East Barnet. Page94 18:35, 20 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

New Barnet edit

But if you look at the Wikipedia site for New Barnet you will find that that includes the shopping area of East Barnet Road (including Sainsburys) as New Barnet, so which is East Barnet and which is New Barnet. I live in Victoria Road (0.25 miles east of the railway line) and I give as my address either New Barnet, Herts or Barnet, Herts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.176.84.206 (talkcontribs) 21:06, 5 January 2013‎
