Comment edit

On November 8th, 2006 the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation broadcasted a 1 hour documentary into this story; The Fifth Estate puts their old programs online, and will be available to watch from their website http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/archives.html and a direct link to the web feature is at http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/iceman/ - Gribbler 07:43, 18 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is an article with poor objectivity - with no attribution for unsubstantiated allegations that are not made by the family, the investigating authorities or the ski area. It appears that the official version is that he died from a crevasse fall, while the family version is that he may have been injured from a crevasse fall but could also have been run over by a ratrac during snow preparation. Documents related to the above are at the link given in the previous comment. Murmeltier (talk) 21:17, 12 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure if this is the correct procedure for discussing the changes I just made. The way the last sentence of the second paragraph was written that I edited gave the impression that he was seen LEAVING the resort, when in fact according to all known sources, he was last seen late in the afternoon going up the chairlift by the girlfriend (now wife) of the snowboard instructor. The way it's worded was incorrect, and gave a very misleading OPINION of his last reported whereabouts, thus changing the whole 'feeling' of the story. I changed "distant friend" to just friend - Duncan and George had known each other a long time and been good friends. Those points are verifiable in the documentary. I removed "low level" from the paragraph describing the job in Dundee, Scotland - I don't see any source for that statement. Gribbler (talk) 02:04, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can someone let me know if posting pictures here, related directly to this story, that are possibly not anywhere else online is acceptable? I have pictures showing where is body was found and thought I could put one up to show the location. Gribbler (talk) 02:24, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • It is the correct procedure, yes, and your recent edits look fine. As far as pictures go, WP:IMAGES discusses in detail how to post them and what rules you need to follow in order to do so. That being said, I see no reason where a picture showing where the body was found is out of line.  Ravenswing  06:17, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Speculations edit

Let's take Seawaggg's reverted edits down the line:

  • "an upstart semi-pro hockey team" - "Upstart" according to whom? WP:LABEL violation.
  • "His career as a possible NHL hockey player had just come to an unhappy end." - How do you know that? For all anyone knows he might have been relieved. Violation on speculation.
  • "The New York Islanders had a few months earlier cut him from their minor league system." - Incorrect. His three-year entry level contract had expired, and that was reflected in the article; that is not being "cut."
  • "and no other pro team had chosen to pick him up." - We don't know that; it's possible - indeed, probable for a 1st rounder, however underperforming - that MacPherson had offers. Violation on speculation again.
  • "No other team saw any potential in the former 1st round draft pick." - And how do you know that? Violation on speculation once again.
  • "from a distant friend" - "Distant" according to whom? WP:LABEL violation.
  • "without advising anyone of his plans" - We don't know that for a certain fact either. Violation on speculation.
  • "into unfamiliar wilderness." - "Unfamiliar" to whom? Violation on speculation.
  • "A young man who had survived winter after winter of -40F in his native Saskatchewan" - Aside from that the average January low temperature in Saskatoon is -8 degrees F, what are you trying to intimate? That there's something sinister in dying of exposure when the thermometer's "only" 15 degrees below freezing? WP:EDITORIAL violation.
  • "gentle Austrian mountains, where at coldest it was 15F." - "Gentle" according to whom? And where is your source for the night time temperatures of the region when MacPherson was there? WP:EDITORIAL violation.

These are all unwarranted, unsourced POV-pushing edits. Seawaggg states in his edit summary that "its not speculation to describe seeing a hoped for career not come true as an unhappy end." It is exactly speculative to do so; he is speculating on what MacPherson's mood was.  Ravenswing  23:29, 18 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I believe Seawaggg means well, and is honestly hoping to improve the article. However, the commentary you are challenging does need to be removed. The article was not in encyclopedic tone and had many statements designed to be dramatic that should not be reinserted. Resolute 14:02, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

So, where's this "mystery" the article is swaggering about? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.163.231.182 (talk) 10:09, 7 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
