Blair's role in East Timorese crisis edit

I added a bit on Blair's role in the 1999 East Timorese crisis where he reportedly disobeyed orders from the Clinton administration. There has been a good deal of public debate about whether Obama's appointees will carry out policies that Obama might favor (e.g. [1], [2]), and many people who will read this Wikipedia article will read it for background on someone who is reported ([3], [4], [5]) to be Obama's appointee for a top-ranking national security post. So the issue of whether Blair disobeyed orders from the Clinton administration is worth mentioning. I included a link to a contemporaneous magazine article reporting the incident. I've re-inserted a reference to a magazine article on Blair's actions during the 1999 Timorese crisis, which quotes directly from classified cables dealing with the matter. Removed a couple of claims and potentially misleading phrasings which the well-sourced article disagrees with, since these claims weren't supported by equally strong evidence (or any evidence). Also added a reference to back up a claim someone else added to the article. 66.153.67.132 (talk) 15:32, 22 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

[In context with the article published in Times Of India news daily;:-"India should work towards earning Pakistan's trust, Says US Intel Boss; Good relations with the US will be essential for India to realize its global ambitions- Dennis Blair"

With all respects to the government of United states of America; I would like to protest the words of Dennis Blair; There has been so many wars, till this day; our mother land has lost so many of its brave soldiers; India as one nation gave separate nations just for some communal internal war inside the country during the time of Independence- Pakistan& Bangladesh; there are still numerous communities in India whose population is still equal to them; they all are living well with equal opportunities.

The recent map of Pakistan shows that they could not safeguard their own boundaries from the ever expanding very outrageous people of Taliban; nearly 1/5th of their lands are engulfed by the Taliban. The fact of Pakistan is a greatest tragedy, i some times in the name of humanity feel pity of the nation as hole whose minds are corrupted to terrorize India rather improve their living and become knowledgeable and build their nation a most resourceful one to stand with the people of the great nations under construction.

The solid proofs that they provoke young minds are published in various news papers timely from their young ages by giving the instances of war and calculate the number of soldiers killed in war against India, is the kind of mathematics served in the schools of Pakistan's text books. On the other hand there are so many instances registered in the offices of India that they are people who do not want to have a friendly relations with India. The greatest politicians have tried in a number of ways to be humble with the country and their people. What do they give us in return, blasts in the city of business a number of times, right from the 1992 blasts, to many other terrorist activities in various states of India. The recent being the 26/11; they corrupt the minds of their own religious people in the name of their god and provoke the decent living people of India; being religious in the Muslim community is difficult to some; have been terrorized by their ill activities.

The people of America and the government could not tolerate the attack on World Trade Centre; then how do you expect the most powerful and a country of great potential as India to be mum, the students of the country are more than enough to destroy the country in one stretch as if it never existed. We don’t always require soldiers to fight back, to the threats posed to the mother India. The American or any European country needs to hide in the shelter of great war machines and modern technologies, If we the people of India does the same only 1/10th the part of the countrymen pick up weapons, against the enemies of the mother land; then you must be certain enough to calculate, that no place on earth or in the never ending space, there shall be any living being left alive to even raise their eyebrows in the direction of our nation.

The highest number of engineers, doctors, scientists, businessman, and political advisors taken into consideration around the world at the highest positions from the smallest levels are Indians. The greatest of them are still in India. Because not any ordinary Indian can survive in the vibrant, ever changing for the betterment of great country India, can work so hard. There is a greatest number of highly educated people who were brain drained every time foreign countries, have failed because most of them want to stay here to build India. So, I would like to tell Mr. Dennis Blair, India doesn’t- only rely on any country; but they need desperately a strong mind of a Indian, for their development. Never misinterpret this fact.

You must be educated well on the history of India and its efforts to be harmonious with the rest of the world. And it’s the rest of the world’s nations that require the most diplomatic strong mind of India, not us. We don’t have the enough posts to handle so many talents, there is not one country left in the world that doesn’t know the country India for its greatness. The US getting its president as Mr. Barack Obama, has influence of the greatest leader of India- Mahatma Gandhi. Being a proud Indian I warn the officials to think a million times before commenting anything of India or anything of such sort. Accuracy of quote "Being a U.S. citizen will not spare an American from getting assassinated by military or intelligence operatives" edit

This article contains a quote attributed to Dennis Blair, but I cannot find this quote in the official congressional transcript of the hearing in which the statement was allegedly made.

The full quote is: “Being a U.S. citizen will not spare an American from getting assassinated by military or intelligence operatives … If we think that direct action will involve killing an American, we get specific permission to do that.”

The first part, "" is not present in the official transcript, which is here: [6]

There are several secondary media sources on the internet, some of which are cited for this quote, which do actually attribute the quote as written to Dennis Blair, but I believe those sources to be wrong based on the transcript.

It is possible that the alleged quotation came from this article: [7], which contains that text, but not as a quotation. It contains the text as a part of the article content, and thus the quote would be attributed to Noel Brinkerhoff, the author.

I concur with your research, and I have corrected the quote. --NilsTycho (talk) 22:56, 20 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
It sometimes happens that official transcripts are not the most reliable record of what is said in Congressional proceedings, as readers of the much praised biography of Lyndon Baines Johnson by Robert Caro know. In fact, they are often cleaned up for various reasons and it would be naive to pretend otherwise. The fact that the quote does not appear in the official transcript should not preclude its use, since it was heard by many, attested as a quote by responsible journalists, and widely commented. (Moreover, I believe that there is little question but that this represents official U.S. policy at present.) 174.24.254.62 (talk) 23:51, 30 August 2010 (UTC) Whoops, didn't realize I wasn't signed in when I wrote that! I'm certainly not trying to hide. Mark K. Jensen (talk) 00:01, 31 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Intel chief Dennis Blair warns threat of capitalism to national security edit

Quote:

"In testimony before the Senate intelligence panel in February of last year, Blair appeared to startle some lawmakers by asserting that the gravest national security threat posed to Washington was not terrorism, but the deepening crisis of world capitalism, which he described as the most severe in “decades if not centuries.” He warned that with it came the threats of a resurgence of the “violent extremism” of the 1920s and 1930s and “regime-threatening instability.”"
