This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

GA nomination for Christ Church Ground edit

Dear all. I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to review my GA nomination for the Christ Church Ground at Oxford. The review page hasn't been created, but I have provided the link here. Cheers in advance. StickyWicket aka AA (talk) 13:25, 28 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Custom B-Class rules for this Wikiproject: Remove them? edit

Hello,

There was a discussion awhile back about moving away from project-specific assessment: Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_198#Project-independent_quality_assessments . Short version was that, in theory, every WikiProject could rate articles their own way, but in practice, this never made any sense. The only quality rankings that "mattered", FA/A/GA, already got enough of an overall review to override any local Wikiproject concerns and set a single ranking, and the lower quality rankings simply don't matter very much. It's best to keep things simple and lightweight, since in practice someone updating the ratings just updates it for every project.

This Wikiproject decided to have a custom class mask for a B-ranking, which seems to have just been done independently without any discussion I can find in the archives. This means that rather than inheriting from the top-level assessment in Template:WikiProject banner shell, this project instead demands that an editor who assesses an article as B-class overall can't just leave it at that. Rather, they have to fetch a shrubbery and instead do a Wikiproject-specific assessment setting by adding b1=y, b2=y, etc. in the specific Wikiproject. Most editors don't do this, judging by the huge amount of C-class articles and fairly few B-class articles in the chart. Which makes sense - the whole point of the above discussion was to move away from WikiProject-specific assessments. Someone setting the top-level rank to B probably just expects everything to be B. See Talk:Oxford–AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as an example of an article that is ranked B but displays as C due to the needless extra bureaucracy imposed here.

I propose that this class mask be removed, and the WP Oxford ranking just inherit from the Banner Shell ranking. If an editor wants to rank an article B-class, let them - we can trust that they know the criteria. (And if an editor is incorrectly marking articles B-class, then this won't even really stop them if they bother to look up what variables to set.) This change would involve modifying Template:WikiProject University of Oxford/class to not have the special rules for B-class. Any objections? SnowFire (talk) 23:45, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

This is done, seeing no response. WP Oxford will now inherit the top-level assessment. SnowFire (talk) 03:38, 9 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

St Anne's College edit

An IP editor has added a single sentence paragraph and photo of a relative of Catherine, Princess of Wales to the history section of St Anne's College. Any contributions to Talk:St Anne's College, Oxford#Gertrude Middleton will be welcome. TSventon (talk) 15:43, 18 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

New articles? edit

If this project has a section for the listing of new articles, I'm not seeing it. So, I'm putting it here, St Catherine's College Bicycle Store. A Grade I listed bike shed must warrant an article. Should anyone fancy a DYK they are very welcome, and the hook should be easy. KJP1 (talk) 06:55, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Featured article review for Richard Hakluyt edit

I have nominated Richard Hakluyt for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets the featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" in regards to the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Hog Farm Talk 17:53, 9 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Francis William Pember edit

Hello all, just over from the cricket project. As part of my expansion of Hampshire County Cricket Club cricketers, I will be expanding the above article. Seems he was an important figure at Oxford. If anyone has any resources to expand his academic career and tenure as Vice-Chancellor, that would be much appreciated. Cheers, AA (talk) 23:06, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

There was an obituary in the Times on 20 January 1954, which is accessible via Gale in the Wikipedia library, but it doesn't add much to the bare facts already in the article. TSventon (talk) 23:59, 16 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for pointing me in that direction, I didn't realise we had access to Gale via the Wikipedia library. I have expanded the article. AA (talk) 19:20, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

St Catherine's College squash courts edit

If any Oxford-based editor were able to take/upload an image of the squash courts/gym at St Catherine's, I would be eternally in their debt. There is currently an irritating gap where a photo should be, in this list, Grade I listed buildings in England completed in the 20th century. KJP1 (talk) 09:17, 8 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
