Raye's Name?

"as he had already found out her name by checking with the church since she revealed to him she was Penbar's fiancee and he reasoned that nobody would use a fake name in marriage and written a scenario whereby Misora would kill herself after shooting Shiori."

In the movie, the FBI agent's name is not Ray Penbar, it's Raye Iwamatsu. You can clearly see it on his badge in the first movie at 52:15. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.173.57.186 (talk)

English Dub confirmed

According to Brian Drummond, Ryuk's English voice actor, the English cast is just finishing up recording the dialogue for the live action movies. You can hear the confirmation in the latest episode of Trevor Devall's podcast.

2008 Showing in North America

I work at a theater that offers special events via the company Fathom and, as I was perusing through my email the other day, found that we will be showing Death Note on May 20-21st. Broken sections

The page was completely broken, someone didn't close a </ref> tag, and two major sections were being appended in the references section. I've fixed it but kept those sections out, because after reviewing them they really need to be cleaned up first. For example, most of the "plot differences" are listed only from the point-of-view of someone who had read the manga. The sections for each movie are far too detailed ("Light's mother and sister are making a cake in the kitchen in his memory.", "Ryuk, still in the real world, flies past Tokyo Tower laughing incessantly."), and these paragraphs would better be suited going into the "Plot" section. There are also some factual accuracies. The deleted text follows. Please rewrite before adding again.

Plot differences between the manga and the films

General changes

• There is no time jump, so the events of the films all happen over the same time span as the first half of the manga. As a result, Higuchi, Near, Mello, Mikami, and Matt do not appear in the movies. (However, the film's inclusion of chocolate bars to the sweets enjoyed by L reminds viewers familiar with the manga/anime of Mello.) Many of the characters that did not appear, particularly Near, played major parts in the anime and manga series, and thus the ending is also very different.
• Instead of the Death Note being passed to Higuchi, it is passed to Takada, who kills her predecessor and becomes the anchor woman. After being captured by the Kira Investigation Team in the Sakura TV Station, she is killed by Light after he regains his memories in a manner similar to how he killed Higuchi in the manga.
• A movie-exclusive character, Shiori Akino (秋野 詩織, Akino Shiori) is introduced as Light's girlfriend. An additional detective, a female named Sanami, is added. Raye Penber is renamed Raye Iwamatsu.
• L writes his own name in the Death Note, overriding the time Rem writes in hers by twenty days. L subsequently outlives Light. Soichiro Yagami also survives the events of the movie.
• They do not change the locations for L's investigation between different hotel rooms. A single hideout is made.
• Sanami (佐波), a character exclusive to the film, is the only female member in the Kira Investigation Team, as opposed to the all-male team in the manga and anime.
• While Mogi survived in the entire course of the manga and anime series, he was killed off in the film. Coincidentally, his death resembled a scene in the manga and anime where Ukita, another member of the investigation team, was also killed.

First film

In the climax of the film, Misora kidnaps Shiori and asks Light to come to the art museum and confess that he really is Kira if he wants to save her. He goes to the museum, but denies that he was Kira, and said that he is upset at seeing his girlfriend being taken hostage. Misora told Light that unless he started to write her real name, which was "Naomi" written in katakana, she would kill Shiori. Light adamantly insists that he is not Kira. Soichiro, upon seeing this, sends the police. Misora immediately becomes upset and distracted, allowing Light's girlfriend to break free and run away from her. Misora fires her gun and shoots Shiori, who dies in Light's arms shortly afterward, and then afterwards commits suicide by shooting herself.

Later, Ryuk finds that Light had actually engineered Naomi's death using the Death Note, as he had already found out her name by checking with the church since she revealed to him she was Iwamatsu's fiancée and he reasoned that nobody would use a fake name in marriage and written a scenario whereby Misora would commit suicide after shooting Shiori. Obviously, Ryuk was confused, as by doing this Light would end up killing her, but Light reveals that he had written her name in the Death Note as well, which shocked Ryuk. When questioned by him, Light does not answer Ryuk.

Using these events to faster hatred for Kira, he asked to join the investigation team when his father checked on him. While Soichiro is slightly reluctant, L immediately grants his wish.

The Last Name

The second film continues the events from the first movie, and uses plot elements from the Yotsuba arc as well as the series' ending. The role of Higuchi is replaced by Takada, who is eventually captured as Higuchi is in the manga. Also, Sakura TV held a festival during the incident at the station. Misa, using her Shinigami eyes, killed Mogi (not Ukita, who was killed in a similar way in the manga and anime) and two policemen. Sayu was also almost killed until her father Soichiro crashed into the festival wearing a motorcycle helmet. Light kills Takada to regain ownership of his Death Note. Light then manipulates the investigation towards Misa, forcing Rem to kill L and Watari. As L is dying, Light admits to him that he is Kira. However, it is revealed later that L faked his death. L had already written his own name in Misa's Death Note (replacing the Note with a fake copy), setting his death for the maximum of 23 days, thus overriding Rem's Death Note. The investigation team surrounds Light, shooting him when he attempts to write on the hidden piece of Death Note in his watch. In a final gambit, Light asks Ryuk to kill the investigation team, but Ryuk writes down Light's name instead. Light dies in his father's arms. L obtains possession of both the Death Notes and burns them. Twenty days later, he dies a peaceful death after being congratulated by Soichiro. Soichiro agrees to not tell his family that Light was really Kira.

The film concludes with events that take place one year later on the anniversary of Light's birthday. Light's mother and sister are making a cake in the kitchen in his memory. When Sayu is told to bring her father an umbrella because it's snowing she reveals her belief that he [Light] died in the fight against Kira. Soichiro hopes that she will never find out the truth. Misa wonders about the gaps in her memory, unable to remember something important about Light. Ryuk, still in the real world, flies past Tokyo Tower laughing incessantly.

Death Note Movies: Multiple Articles?

I was the one who suggested that the article for the Death Note movies be split into multiple (or two, as I would suggest) because, in the end, we are talking about two movies. Right now, the plot summary is the rather sparse one given for the Death Note manga that only introduces the story. While it would be a good idea to lengthen the section to better explain the total story, having two separate pages might be more useful for going into the individual deviations from the original manga. I'm hesitant to talk about having just one list of such changes on the current pages, because it could easily get too long or nitpicking to be something that would be easy to read. I see here that you already have some good summaries for both films and a list of changes in the plot and these could be used to help do that. If you can think of a way of expanding this one article to better talk about both films, please do so. Bus Driver

The Bus Driver in the film; I'm positive he's a actor in something else (probably a Film/ Series based in America); but have no idea who portrays him; the actors name and all- it's not mentioned here; and if he's a relatively-well known actor- he possibly should be?

Anyone have any idea who he is? And if he should be mentioned here?

Bias in the comment on its rating in America

And I quote from the American Release section, "Although there is little in the movie to justify this, the apparent presence of a couple uses of the word "fuck" in the English dub (missing from subtitled releases) is an automatic "R" by MPAA rating rule." This sounds an awful lot like a rather biased, disgruntled Death Note movie fan. Personally, I do not know what qualifies as an "automatic R" by the MPAA, but I very highly doubt that they base their ratings on such shaky profanity-based grounds, being the MPAA and all. Both the writing style and its jab at the MPAA both give a strong feeling of bias. Indeed, this comes right after the line "...[the film] has not been rated, but given the equivalent of a US "R" rating." How does the writer know this? The Anime News Network source does not mention anything about the movie's rating, merely the movie's release. As such, I am cutting the section on the rating until suitable evidence can be given to me to explain to me why it is either going to be or already is an R-rated film. Something in me highly doubts that it will be R-Rated merely because of a couple of swears. That feels like PG-13 territory. According to the MPAA, a PG-13 movie is allowed to drop the F-bomb only once throughout the entire film, and it has to be used in context. American remake

Removed...

Removed a part from the section for the American Remake.

In a recnt interview about Me and Orson WellesZac Efron (an actor long rumored to play light) said that he has had a few meetings about it and that he might start in it some time in the future.

Different Plot?

As far as the plot of the movie, I haven't seen the movie but I watched the anime and am catching up in the manga. From how it appeared in a fan video, it seemed like the plot was different from the manga and anime (something involving one girl shooting another didn't seem to fit). I went to check that on this page, but the plot summary was too general to tell. Could someone who's seen the movie fill it in with the full plot (even if it contains spoilers, most other movies' Wikipedia pages do that too) rather than such a non-descriptive sentence as "The race begins between L and Light to discover each other's identity, and a game of cat and mouse ensues between the two geniuses." Spliting this article

Having search through results for "death note", I found the article Death Note 2: The Last Name. Since some of the information here should be in that article instead of here, I would recommend splitting this article. I propose that all information regarding the second film be transferred to that article, while those regarding the first film will remain here.
