Move request

As I learned in a discussion about the proper location for the men's competition, DFB-Pokal is used in the English language instead of DFB-Cup. Though DFB Cup Women is the official title of the competition it is not the name used in practice and as of wikipedia naming conventions we use the name most common in English publications. There doesn't seem to be a general consensus whether to call the competition "Frauen DFB-Pokal" or DFB-Pokal (women), even DFB-Pokal Women might be viable. The competition is called "Frauen DFB Pokal" on Soccerway, but I can't find the competition on any other English sites. Suggestions appreciated...

I agree that it ought to be moved to reflect the German name for this competition. It appears that the German wikipedia for this article is calling it DFB-Pokal (Frauen) (DFB-Cup (Women)). It looks like the DFP call it DFB-Pokal der Frauen (ref) which translates to DFB-Cup for the Women. I suggest calling it DFB-Pokal (women). --Pinkkeith (talk) 18:15, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

Frauen DFB Pokal → DFB-Pokal (women) — I suggest this article be moved to DFB-Pokal (women). This would reflect the other naming strategies used for the leagues which are all at Leaguename (women). Also there seems to be no common name for the competition in English - one source (esp. one not so reliable such as soccerway) does not make a common name. • Support - per nom. Another possibility would be the use of "DFB Cup (women)", as "DFB Cup" is the name of the competition at the official DFB homepage.

• It is a self reference, but considering that it's an official page for the site itself what they use is very likely to be copied by any English media sources. Both Frauen DFB Pokal and DFB-Pokal (women) are not compliant with WP:UE anyway, so... Oppose, but Support Women's DFB Cup (Using "Woman's" at the beginning is neater then using it in parentheses. It also seems to be a common pattern in articles throughout the Category:Women's football (soccer) tree).

No move request, just a hint

I'm not active on english wikipedia so i won't do any official requests. The current title however is a strange mixture of english and german. I think that you should choose either of these ;-) instead of creating your own name.

If you chose to use the original german title as a proper name, it's DFB-Pokal. As the competition for men has the same name, listed as DFB-Pokal in en.wp, you could add _(women). Parentheses are "neater" (Ohms law above) as it is no official suffix, just a workaround for Wikipedia. Adding a german prefix "Frauen" is wrong in an english text, as "Frauen" is not part of the competition's official name.

However, even if you chose to invent a german title, it would be Frauen-DFB-Pokal as noun-noun compounds in german are either merged to funny long words (foot + ball = football, football + player = footballplayer, etc) or linked to each other by hyphens, which applies if the compound contains an abbreviation, as here. I have never seen Frauen-DFB-Pokal in any german text, usually it is referred to as DFB-Pokal der Frauen or something similar.

So the proper article name should be DFB-Pokal (women) just as suggested three years ago, if you want to use the original german name. Else, if you prefer to translate the title (if this is usual in your international sports articles) you are free to use proper english (something like Women's DFB cup) as there is no official english title given by DFB. --Magadan ?! 11:09, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Frauen DFB Pokal → DFB-Pokal (women) – Per WP:UE "Frauen" is not English. The Bundesliga (women) uses the same type of disambiguation as proposed. DFB-Pokal with a "-" instead of a space is the same as used for the men's DFB-Pokal. This change would apply to the 34 seasons of the competition as well but they would not all fit in the multiple template. EddieV2003 (talk) 02:20, 11 December 2013 (UTC)

• Question Why the parentheses? Per WP:UE: "The choice between anglicized and local spellings should follow English-language usage, e.g., the non-anglicized titles Besançon, Søren Kierkegaard, and Göttingen are used since they predominate in English language reliable sources, while for the same reason the anglicized title forms Nuremberg, delicatessen, and Florence are used.". I can't find any reliable sources in English that say DFB-Pokal (women); there are plenty with DFB Pokal Women or Women's DFB Pokal. Hyphenation sometimes included, sometimes not. • Comment I think Bundesliga (women) is a very poor exemplar because Frauen-Bundesliga is a sort of proper noun which is both the official name of the competition and its WP:COMMONNAME. With this one my personal preference would be to stay German with DFB-Pokal der Frauen. Part-English, part-foreign compound titles should be a last resort for when there's no viable alternative.
