Status when the EEU comes into force

What will the status of the ECU be when the EEU comes into force? Is it being replaced? Will they operate in parallel? Will the ECU come under the framework of the EEU? I've seen it suggested that the ECU will be replaced (ie [1]) but it would be good if this could be clarified with clear sourcing from those involved. @Mentoroso: you seem to be knowledgeable in this subject. Hi Dan! The ECU will come under the framework of the EEU. Its status will still be active and will expand to all member states of the EEU. Thus, it's like the European Union Customs Union. Legally, the ECU operated under the framework of the Eurasian Economic Community (although in practice it worked as its own small union within the community). When the EEU comes into force, it will be the legal successor of the Eurasian Economic Community (the latter will be replaced). This means that the ECU by default comes under the framework of the EEU.

The treaty of the EEU which was signed 29 May 2014, as we all know, provides for a more integrated economic union. What should also be noted is that the treaty also adds more components and features to the Customs Union (and it clearly says that the Customs Union comes under the framework of the EEU). Thanks for the answers you've given so far, but I'm still a bit fuzzy on some of the specifics. That the customs union "will expand to all member states of the EEU" -- does that mean from the beginning, or is it a future goal? More specifically do Armenia and Kyrgyzstan (which weren't members of the customs union) become members of the customs union on January 1, 2015, when the EEU goes into effect? OK, after digging through the translated treaty text I think I understand the situation now. Appendix 32 says that the original Customs Union treaty of 2007 is being terminated, replaced by provisions for a NEW Customs Union within the EEU. So the Customs Union will live on as an organ within the EEU, but it will not be a separate treaty-based organization. All EEU members will by definition be part of the Customs Union, and likewise it will not be possible to be a member of the Customs Union without first joining the EEU. (Barring some sort of treaty.) Exactly. The Customs Union will live on as an organ within the EEU. It won't be a separate treaty-based organization. So custom checks won't happen anymore with Armenia and Kyrgyzstan (this will be implemented and applied beginning 2015). The EULA diagram should therefore not have the Customs Union nor the Single Economic Space, only the EEU.

Small detail: like European Union Customs Union, it's possible that in the future the EEU decides to admit some non-members to the customs union. If that happens, Aris, you'll need to do the same thing as the EU template: Supranational European Bodies → a circle for the EEU and a circle for the EEU customs union. Proposal to merge articles

This page should maybe be merged with the EEU page which already covers some of the material in its “history section”. Since the Customs Union not only no longer exists but only existed briefly and with the established intent of becoming the EEU the existence of a separate page seems redundant and superfluous.
