Rewrite for this article edit

As this article is rather short and I would like to extend it to include some more information about coronavirus diseases (SARS, MERS, COVID-19) and maybe add something about milder coronavirus infections/diseases. I am looking forward to feedback and comments regarding my rewrite. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trymianc (talkcontribs) 19:00, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Looking forward to this page becoming more useful. I ask the content is really clear for the average reader. Sgerbic (talk) 20:34, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
My edit is done and live. Do improve the wording if you find it not to be very clear for the average reader. Trymianc (talk) 07:27, 7 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think it should have a subsection under "Coronavirus diseases" that indicates it causes 15-30% of the cases of the common cold, being second only to rhinoviruses. (see sources in the section above if additional sorucing needed) -- 65.94.170.207 (talk) 15:30, 11 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Move discussion in progress edit

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Mers (disambiguation) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 21:48, 26 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

General applicability and specificity edit

I am unconvinced the term 'coronavirus disease', or any of the alternate definitions given in the lede of this article, are applicable broadly to all diseases caused by infection with a coronavirus. I have been unable to find the term "coronavirus disease" used prior to December 2019 to refer to SARS, MERS, or common colds resulting from CoVs. Further, the WHO appears to define 'coronavirus disease' as referring solely to COVID-19: "Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus." The ECDC mirrors this definition: "Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)". I was only able to find the use of one of the definitions in the lede (coronavirus pneumonia) prior to December 2019, and it appeared to refer specifically to MERS and its symptoms, not to SARS or coronavirus-caused common cold (with the common cold article referring specifically to pneumonia as a complication, not synonymous with a CoV cold itself).

While it seems natural to refer to 'diseases caused by coronaviruses' as 'coronavirus disease', as best I can tell this does not match the scientific and medical definition of the term. Just like how not all diseases caused by a Severe acute respiratory syndrome–related coronavirus are Severe acute respiratory syndrome, 'coronavirus disease' appears to have been defined by the WHO as referring solely to COVID-19 at this time. If this is not the case, then a citation which fulfills WP:MEDRS should be included in the article, and the article text should be confirmed to match those reliable sources.

Without such a citation being found, I propose one of two things happen. One would be to delete this article, as it appears to be a near complete repeat of information already found in the coronavirus article. The other, which mimics the division of other articles about a viral illness and the virus which causes them (ie. Orthomyxoviridae and Influenza), would be to rename this article to avoid conflict with a term specific to only one or some coronavirus-induced illnesses (such as "diseases caused by coronaviruses" or "coronavirus illnesses") and work to make each article specific to the virus or the diseases. Bakkster Man, thanks for the ping.
I would like to mark an error at the WHO page: COVID-19 is "Corona" "Virus" "Disease" "2019," not "Corona" "Virus" "Disease." The ECDC source only mentions "coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)," not what you quoted. Or perhaps I read the article wrongly.
I said in Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 October 28#COVID that I would prefer to dabify this article, but I am also fine with listifying. I actually agree with you: "coronavirus disease" seems to only refer to COVID-19 in the medical field, a very weird misnomer. This article's author seemed to intend in making a list, but uses prose format instead. GeraldWL 17:41, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
The ECDC page has a link at the bottom containing the quoted text. I agree that it's a weird shortening, but it seems primarily due to COVID-19 being the first novel coronavirus since the 2015 naming conventions which SARS and MERS don't satisfy, and those same naming conventions choosing not to rename existing diseases. I expect we'll have future COVID-XX designations for later novel coronavirus outbreaks, but until then the terms are synonymous.
Listifying with a rename to decouple from the WHO-defined term sounds appropriate to me, so long as there remains a link to the coronavirus page. Though I'm still left wondering why we need this page if the coronavirus article contains the same information already. Bakkster Man (talk) 18:01, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Listify and rename. Didn't realize this was mostly just a duplicate of content already covered in Coronavirus. I'd suggest renaming to Coronavirus diseases and listifying or just redirecting to the appropriate section of Coronavirus. - Wikmoz (talk) 22:55, 28 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
If it is okay, I'll probably try and listify. GeraldWL 05:23, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me but not sure of the official process for this. Heads up to two major contributors... Seth Whales and 67.70.33.184. - Wikmoz (talk) 06:09, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Wikmoz, Bakkster Man, and Seth Whales: currently creating one at User:Gerald Waldo Luis/sandbox 6. Feel free to expand it. GeraldWL 07:31, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for taking the first stab at it. I'm going to hack away at it, but I guess the question is how much distinction and naming we want to provide. Particularly with the less severe human coronaviruses, some of which are explicitly referred to as 'common cold', others (particularly Human coronavirus NL63) with similar symptoms that may develop into more severe ones. Perhaps this is the only outlier without a direct disease name (per the article, difficult to pin down due to frequent co-infection). My take at it is three human viruses causing diseases named 'common cold', one 'respiratory infection', plus the animal ones and SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. Bakkster Man (talk) 14:06, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Took a crack at the first paragraph, reusuing some content from the coronavirus article. Assuming we rename the topic to "Coronavirus diseases", I don't think the third paragraph regarding COVID vs. COVID-19 is necessary. - Wikmoz (talk) 18:14, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm not convinced on "Coronaviruses" by itself, at that point why not add this list to Coronavirus (which Coronaviruses already redirects to)? Perhaps List of coronaviruses? I'd be content with Coronavirus diseases for brevity rather than diseases caused by coronaviruses as well, so long as we keep the coronavirus diseaseCoronavirus disease 2019 redirect that prompted this discussion in the first place. My preference of the preceding would be List of coronaviruses. Bakkster Man (talk) 18:30, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry! My mistake. I meant "Coronavirus diseases". Edited in line above to correct. - Wikmoz (talk) 22:31, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • Listify and rename with dabifying the coronavirus disease title. There are disagreements about the definition of coronavirus disease, and some of the major medical orgs are using this term to solely refer to COVID-19. --Soumya-8974 talk contribs subpages 13:50, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Gerald Waldo Luis, Bakkster Man, and Seth Whales: Made a few more edits. Ok to put in table form? Seems much more readable now. - Wikmoz (talk) 20:05, 3 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Good enough to push live? Should help gain broader editing support. - Wikmoz (talk) 22:50, 3 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Great call on the table. I just added no-wrap tags to the parenthetical dates to improve the last bit. I was planning to give a week from my proposal looking for dissent, so I think we're ready to move things over. Bakkster Man (talk) 15:10, 4 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Gerald Waldo Luis, can we push live? - Wikmoz (talk) 19:29, 7 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

The corona virus is so strong that when you get it you have to sit fourteen days in bed. edit
