Is it the oldest church in Russia, as stated in the article? I thought there are older Chrisian churches in Northern Caucasus. Goudzovski 09:54, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Name edit

I would propose calling it the Cathedral of Holy Wisdom. Referring to it as Saint Sophia or Holy Sophia is not only inconsistent, but gives the impression that it is named after some saintly woman named Sophia. This was already been noted in the text. Mcpaul1998, I am not sure that the move is in line with the Wikipedia policies. Of course, the cathedral is named after the Holy Wisdom, however we should be guided by WP:COMMONNAME. Can you show that Cathedral of Holy Wisdom is the most commonly used name? Alaexis¿question? 10:23, 24 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

In google books "St Sophia Cathedral Novgorod" and "Holy Wisdom Cathedral" have 9,300 and 2,700 hits respectively. In Google Scholar it's 3360 to 2750. Admittedly it's a very rough estimate but the burden is on the mover to demonstrate that the new title is the most common name. As a side note, Hagia Sophia is also named for the Divine Wisdom.
