Question from CorsicanTranslate (12:27, 23 January 2024) edit

Hello, I've signed up because I'm looking to gain experience in translating documents. I can translate into several different languages. I would like to know how to get started and have my translations read by the moderators. --CorsicanTranslate (talk) 12:27, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @CorsicanTranslate, possibly the best place to start is Wikipedia:Pages needing translation into English or Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki. If you're going to improve existing articles, go ahead and do it, happy to review it or answer questions (even though there is no such thing as a moderator on Wikipedia). If you'd like to create new articles, it's better to start in draftspace - please review Help:Your first article. Alaexis¿question? 12:40, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Abasgoi edit

Hi Alaexis, your edit here hit one of my interest points so I read the relevant parts of the source straight away. Despite these personal preferences, per the recent talkpage note would you consider adding it to the more dedicated History of Abkhazia article instead? You might also want to add to Abasgoi. Best, CMD (talk) 09:01, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Yes, definitely. I've just added it to the History article, I got distracted after my first edit. Alaexis¿question? 12:53, 26 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from IncandescentBliss (01:02, 31 January 2024) edit

Hi there! I’ve been having a lot of my research-based edits reverted by a user (Potatín5) who seems to have almost been banned a year ago according to their talk page. What can I do about this? Thank you for your time! --IncandescentBliss (talk) 01:02, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, @IncandescentBliss. It looks like a content dispute and I see that you've already initiated a discussion with that user, which is great! Unfortunately I'm not qualified to comment on the subject matter. Your sources seem to be fine, but I have no idea whether this is the new scholarly consensus or a fringe view. If you feel that the discussion is going nowhere, I would suggest seeking outside input, for example at WP:Wikiproject Israel or WP:Wikiproject Bible or by initiating a WP:RFC. Alaexis¿question? 21:10, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! I know about the Bible project but not the Israel. That’s helpful. It’s been frustrating because this seems to be one of the only active editors in some pages I’ve been editing. And they have pretty extreme views (which led to them being on restriction at Israel-Palestine pages.) It seems they’ve migrated their revisionism from Israel-Palestine pages to pages that are merely adjacent to the topic. Is there a way to request that some pages are officially in that topic. The user still seems to be able to edit pages like Solomon and Josiah which should be included in the Israel-Palestine editing restriction I believe. IncandescentBliss (talk) 21:16, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
Today he reverted the work I did on the lede to Ten Commandments even after I quoted exclusively from his preferred source. IncandescentBliss (talk) 22:03, 31 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Article notability edit

Does an article like this Al-Maghazi UNRWA school airstrike have enough coverage to really need its own article? 80.217.100.31 (talk) 21:05, 1 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for the delayed response. It looks like there are a few sources dealing with this incident, so it's not an automatic "No." Do you have any specific concerns, especially ones related to Wikipedia:Notability#Events? Alaexis¿question? 13:59, 3 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I was just wondering how much a coverage a article needs in news. This article for example only directly sources from un and unrwa, and two short articles from Reuters, that only repeat what unrwa said on twitter. Also a liveblog from times of Israel that shortly references what the statement from the head of URWWA. 80.217.100.31 (talk) 23:09, 3 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Principality of Pronsk edit

Hi, I am starting work on creating articles for appanage principalities and appanage princes (surprisingly there is almost nothing). I just started Principality of Pronsk. Please let me know if you have any feedback or suggestions that you would like to share. Thanks. Mellk (talk) 15:08, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

It's great that you've started working on it! I'm sure you've checked the ruwiki article, it has more information about the principality, although frustratingly there are no inline citations.
Here are a couple of images you may want to use for illustration

Good luck! Please let me know once you've created other articles, I'd be happy to review them. Alaexis¿question? 22:43, 14 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I was hoping to add information from ru:Пронское княжество but unfortunately there is a lack of citations. Thanks for the help. Mellk (talk) 07:22, 15 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I also made a start on Principality of Tarusa. I am just not sure what could be considered the definite end date, though. I have seen some sources mention 1392, when Vasily I received the yarlyk to annex Tarusa, but there were still a couple more princes of Tarusa after this in some years (more like vassalage) and the appanages were still switching between Lithuania and Moscow until they were eventually all annexed by Moscow. ru:Тарусское княжество says 13th to 15th centuries, for example. Mellk (talk) 11:50, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Looks good! Regarding the end date, according to Kelembet the (already non-independent) Tarusa princes lost Tarusa town for good between 1462 and 1473 ([1], p. 124).
Also, it's possible that the claim that Yury was a son of Michail of Chernigov is a later fabrication (Kelembet, pp. 71-75) Alaexis¿question? 21:31, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, there are apparently some rather unimpressive remains of the old city and a modern monument commemorating them [2]. I can't find any images on WikiCommons though. Alaexis¿question? 21:36, 18 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll try to incorporate this information into the article. Mellk (talk) 14:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question from CaptivatingtheKing (07:04, 26 February 2024) edit

Hello there! I am working on my first draft article and wondering how many sources you recommend. Is 50 a respectable amount? --CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 07:04, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @CaptivatingtheKing, it depends a lot on the topic. Can you share a link to your draft? Alaexis¿question? 07:48, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think this is the link: User:CaptivatingtheKing/sandbox
Please let me know if that gives you access! Of course, I'm trying to make things as clear and well sourced as possible. CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 07:53, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
The article is quite comprehensive and can be promoted. Thanks for contributing to Wikipedia! Alaexis¿question? 09:29, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wonderful! How do I promote it? Do I submit it to you for review directly as my mentor? CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 11:23, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've moved it to the mainspace. For your reference, there are two options: you could submit your draft for review using the big blue button, or you could move it to the mainspace yourself if you're confident that it's notable (you might need some user rights for that though).
Regarding the article itself, there is one problematic source used in it, Findagrave. It's not considered a reliable source (see WP:RSP), so please remove or replace it. Alaexis¿question? 19:02, 26 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for moving it to the mainspace and explaining the options. I have removed the problematic source with a credible one! Is there a list of sources that are not reputable I could familiarise myself with? I wouldn't want to make the mistake again unknowingly. CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 02:36, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Happy to have helped! There are some sources which are considered completely unreliable because they contain user-generated content (like Findagrave) and many more whose reliability depends on the context. The summary can be found at WP:RSP. Alaexis¿question? 14:48, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Quick follow up question: Does the fact the article is moved to the mainspace mean it can be seen by other users? Will the article be 'Googleable'? CaptivatingtheKing (talk) 03:07, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes and yes, you can check it yourself. Alaexis¿question? 14:49, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I saw that you've removed some sourced information in those articles. Can you explain at the talk page what's the problem with the information you've removed? Alaexis¿question? 08:33, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
the story is fictional and does not correspond to the sources about the tribe, although It is usually not a tribe, but only separatists from one tribe Alsho093 (talk) 09:36, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
The Misimians were the descendants of Byzantium and lived on the territory of present-day Russia. They were not in Kodora, but only in Eastern Abkhazia and Karachay-Cherkessia, that's what Alsho093 (talk) 09:37, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Look, the way Wikipedia works is that you need sources supporting what you say. Now these articles are based on Georgian historiography. To add alternative views, you need to find sources which describe them. Alaexis¿question? 10:25, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have already done it, but I have not removed the Georgian ones, since they exist, it means that someone has this theory and even if it is false, there is a place to be in the article for the kind Alsho093 (talk) 10:49, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Russia–NATO relations edit

With respect, reverting my Chechnya edit to Russia–NATO relations was not appropriate. The proper action was to contact me, use the Talk page, and/or add a citation needed flag. It's not just "all post-Soviet conflicts"—it's at least as relevant as Georgia, and the destruction and subjugation of Chechnya is a direct precursor to what Russia (Putin) is now doing to Ukraine. I've added it back with a supporting citation. Please do not engage in an edit war. John Navas (talk) 00:29, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Jnavas2, thanks for adding the source. There are some other issues which I'll raise at the talk. I'm sorry if it felt inappropriate, however this is certainly not an edit war (an edit war occurs when editors who disagree about the content of a page repeatedly override each other's contributions). WP:BRD is a widely used editing practice. Alaexis¿question? 08:38, 13 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
  1. "In other situations, you may have better success with alternatives to this approach. Care and diplomacy should be exercised. Some editors will see any reversion as a challenge, so be considerate and patient."
  2. I have added additional context to Talk:Russia–NATO relations#Chechnya.

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I edit

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

  • Proposal 2, initiated by HouseBlaster, provides for the addition of a text box at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship reminding all editors of our policies and enforcement mechanisms around decorum.
  • Proposals 3 and 3b, initiated by Barkeep49 and Usedtobecool, respectively, provide for trials of discussion-only periods at RfA. The first would add three extra discussion-only days to the beginning, while the second would convert the first two days to discussion-only.
  • Proposal 5, initiated by SilkTork, provides for a trial of RfAs without threaded discussion in the voting sections.
  • Proposals 6c and 6d, initiated by BilledMammal, provide for allowing users to be selected as provisional admins for a limited time through various concrete selection criteria and smaller-scale vetting.
  • Proposal 7, initiated by Lee Vilenski, provides for the "General discussion" section being broken up with section headings.
  • Proposal 9b, initiated by Reaper Eternal, provides for the requirement that allegations of policy violation be substantiated with appropriate links to where the alleged misconduct occured.
  • Proposals 12c, 21, and 21b, initiated by City of Silver, Ritchie333, and HouseBlaster, respectively, provide for reducing the discretionary zone, which currently extends from 65% to 75%. The first would reduce it 65%–70%, the second would reduce it to 50%–66%, and the third would reduce it to 60%–70%.
  • Proposal 13, initiated by Novem Lingaue, provides for periodic, privately balloted admin elections.
  • Proposal 14, initiated by Kusma, provides for the creation of some minimum suffrage requirements to cast a vote.
  • Proposals 16 and 16c, initiated by Thebiguglyalien and Soni, respectively, provide for community-based admin desysop procedures. 16 would desysop where consensus is established in favor at the administrators' noticeboard; 16c would allow a petition to force reconfirmation.
  • Proposal 16e, initiated by BilledMammal, would extend the recall procedures of 16 to bureaucrats.
  • Proposal 17, initiated by SchroCat, provides for "on-call" admins and 'crats to monitor RfAs for decorum.
  • Proposal 18, initiated by theleekycauldron, provides for lowering the RfB target from 85% to 75%.
  • Proposal 24, initiated by SportingFlyer, provides for a more robust alternate version of the optional candidate poll.
  • Proposal 25, initiated by Femke, provides for the requirement that nominees be extended-confirmed in addition to their nominators.
  • Proposal 27, initiated by WereSpielChequers, provides for the creation of a training course for admin hopefuls, as well as periodic retraining to keep admins from drifting out of sync with community norms.
  • Proposal 28, initiated by HouseBlaster, tightens restrictions on multi-part questions.

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:

Question from TheyMustKnowTheTRUTH (12:11, 21 March 2024) edit

Hey Alaexis! How do I ensure what I'm writing is correct information; for example, if I'm writing in the Hamburg, Germany page and I find information somewhere else that tells me the population was different was to what the WIKI page says, how do I ensure which one is correct? --TheyMustKnowTheTRUTH (talk) 12:11, 21 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

@TheyMustKnowTheTRUTH, if you've checked the source for the existing figure and you're absolutely sure that it's incorrect and the information you found elsewhere is correct, then you should simply update the article providing the source for the added information.
If you're not wholly sure, or if the article is edit-protected, then it's best to raise it at the article's talk page. Alaexis¿question? 09:16, 22 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Unexplained removal of content edit

Alaexis, you recently removed content here with edit summary of only "the invasion is long under way so the future tense doesn't make sense". If the tense is the only issue then that should have been fixed rather than the content removed altogether.

Afro-Abkhazians edit

If you find the information not fitting, I suggest you put it in a different article instead of erasing it from Cyberspace. Shoshin000 (talk) 08:12, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

It's not erased, all the versions of all articles are permanently saved. This information doesn't belong to the article about Afro-Abkhazians, please feel free to add it to other articles. If you think it should be retained, you can seek outside feedback via WP:DR or at WP:WikiProject Caucasia. Alaexis¿question? 08:19, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't agree with this way of doing. That bit was not misleading anyone, it was "Africans in other parts of the Caucasus". Erasing from Cyberspace was a figure of speech, but in any case you made information less accessible.
Regarding adding to another article, do you have any proposal? Shoshin000 (talk) 08:34, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, the part about Africans in Batumi can be added to the article about that city. I'm not sure that the fact that the Library of congress has a picture of a Black Karabakhi and the picture of a random African in Vladikavkaz merit the inclusion into Wikipedia. However, if there were notable communities of African descent there, then they should be described in the relevant articles and the photo can be used as an illustration.
Finally, if reliable sources link these Africans to the Afro-Abkhazians then we can mention them in this article, but to the best of my knowledge they are unrelated. Alaexis¿question? 08:55, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
What about creating a more general article "Africans in the Caucasus" or something similar?
And I'll repeat: that contextualized bit was not misleading anyone. Shoshin000 (talk) 09:46, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have no problems with creating such an article. I didn't say it was misleading. If you had added this content to the article about Afro-Germans it wouldn't have been misleading but would be irrelevant. Alaexis¿question? 10:10, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, please be aware of the WP:3RR rule. Alaexis¿question? 08:31, 8 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hey, I've checked WikiProject Caucasia and WikiProject African Diaspora, but they both seem inactive. I personally don't have time to start a whole article about the African diaspora in the Caucasus, so I think that until now it's the lesser evil. In the sense that it's better than having the information on the topic be inaccessible. Regarding Batumi, I think that adding it in that article alone is not as relevant, as people looking for information on Africans in the Caucasus are more likely to stumble upon "Afro-Abkhazians" than "Batumi". Shoshin000 (talk) 08:35, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I disagree with this logic. It's like adding information to the articles about Africans in Britain to the article about about African Germans just because both Britain and Germany are in Europe. The Caucasus is big and very diverse. The Afro-Abkhazians have their own distinct history and have nothing to do with Africans in Karabakh or Vladikavkaz. Alaexis¿question? 12:00, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Sure, but again, removing it without creating an alternative is essentially being destructive. Shoshin000 (talk) 13:39, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Help needed edit

Please help me change some pages that misslead people and have wrong info. Hamas is a terror organization which it's main purpose is to demolish Israel. As seen on the events of the 7th of October. They don't care about the citizens of Gaza, that's why they take every humanitarian aid the area receives. They are brutal, moved by the lust for blood and nothing less. They have kidnapped innocent civilians, which obviously is against war laws. They tortured many men, women and children. Did unbearable things, and yet Wikipedia calls them "resistance movement" and not a terror organization. Change that ASAP! Proof: https://embassies.gov.il/san-francisco/AboutIsrael/Pages/Hamas-Covenant.aspx This link has 36 articles showing what Hamas's true beliefs are. Simkameow (talk) 21:13, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Simkameow, I completely agree that the coverage of Hamas here is not good. Regarding the "terror organisation" label, Wikipedia has a policy about that (MOS:TERROR) which says that we can write that many countries consider them terrorists but not call them this way in Wikipedia's own voice.
Personally, I think that labels are less important than providing information about their real beliefs and activities. I'll check your link, maybe I'd be able to add some information from it.
Also, I urge you to contribute to Wikipedia in other areas in order to be able to participate in these discussions directly (see WP:XC). Alaexis¿question? 06:39, 10 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

DYK for History of the Jews in Dubrovnik edit

On 15 April 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article History of the Jews in Dubrovnik, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Jewish community of Dubrovnik grew due to the expulsions of Jews and Marranos from the Iberian peninsula? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/History of the Jews in Dubrovnik. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, History of the Jews in Dubrovnik), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

It's right there in the article edit

No, it isn't, It says that CST said that (this has also been discussed at RSN, the MEMO discussion). Selfstudier (talk) 21:54, 15 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

I re-read it and I see your point, as it's not exactly clear from the article whether the characterisation comes from the CST or from Pfeffer.
I've found the original post, in which MEMO is characterised as "Islamist lobby group." No mention of conspiracies, so it must come from Pfeffer. Alaexis¿question? 06:16, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
It says right there in that original post "MEMO has featured repeatedly on the CST Blog for peddling conspiracy theories and myths about Jews,.." Can we just cut the bs now, please? Selfstudier (talk) 10:23, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I didn't notice it, thanks for pointing it out. I've fixed the attribution in the article. Please note that WP:CIVIL is a policy. Alaexis¿question? 11:10, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
I am ordinarily civil, except when faced with recalcitrance. Now you have attributed CST, a charity with zero expertise in news and when the information comes from a blog and not from CST itself, so that is therefore undue. Selfstudier (talk) 11:34, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, it was mentioned by Haaretz so we're not using their blog as the source. The CST have quite a lot of experience in conspiracy theories and are widely cited by other RS ([3], [4], [5]). Alaexis¿question? 11:52, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's not the CST, it's a CST blog. Never mind, I will raise it at the article directly since further discussion here seems pointless. Selfstudier (talk) 12:00, 16 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Partition Plan edit

Ah, thanks for offering to respond here :) I was unsure how to react; in Germany, we don't have the rule that discussions are not allowed on talk pages.

Firstly, you are of course right that the bulk of the subdistrict was and remains unsuitable for agriculture. However, I am bothered by the phrasing in this section because it simultaneously obscures how the partition proposal was perceived. It was not seen as barren land. I have linked to Chacour on the talk page. This is not a scientific work, but rather a type of memoir; there you can see how it was perceived: "What, even our breadbasket is now to be stolen from us!?" There are several lists by Arab authors detailing what was "unfair" about the partition plan, and the inclusion of agricultural land in the Negev is often mentioned. (So, I don't think this is original research). Hence, I think it needs to be clearly stated that now, of the five major agricultural areas of Palestine, not three but four were supposed to go to Israel.

That Bedouins farmed in the Central Negev is very well established. See Mayerson 1960 (whole article), the said dissertation by Bruins, Avni 2019, p. 7 (cool photos); Meraiot et al. 2021, p. 10f.; Mor-Mussery 2022, 3.2
also Stavi u.a. 2017, 3.2 on the Aravah (I didn't know that before).
Ashkenazy 2019, p. 3 has a map with old Bedouin orchards, see also Abu Sitta 2009, p. 11 on the map on p. 13. (so, this isn't OR either).
But, again, you are right, the whole southern half is not arable.

The phrasing also bothers me a bit because of the current political discussions in Israel, but that's probably only of secondary importance for the page. Just so you understand: Israel has declared much of this area as state land. Bedouins have filed several thousand claims, and most have been denied. Often with the note that this was "dead land" (mawat); this is then used to argue that no one could have lived there, so the respective Bedouin claims cannot be accepted. The Bedouins then respond that it was obviously fertile land - but this is often not accepted by the courts (if you believe Kedar: almost never. Cf. also the very good article of Rangwala 2004). So, writing that the Negev was predominantly barren is also a political statement nowadays, sadly.
But I'm not too attached to it; if you're not convinced, feel free to leave it :) DaWalda (talk) 20:39, 19 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

Non-extended-confirmed editors are placed under certain restrictions per this ArbCom ruling.
Let's give other editors a chance to weigh in at the talk page.
Btw, we don't have a good treatment of the historical agriculture in the Negev. Maybe you could create a WP:DRAFT of an article about it? Or at least to add a section to one of the existing articles. Alaexis¿question? 12:24, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
