it is not clear if this page is about the community of cannery row or the novel by john steinbeck. separate pages should be made for this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.91.198.6 (talkcontribs) 21:53, 28 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Can you say more about why you think it is unclear? This article starts out with "Cannery Row is the waterfront street", and the second paragraph mentions the novel (there seems not yet to be a separate article about the novel) and links to the existing separate article about the film. — RandallJones 00:06, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Well, this argument would have had merit were Cannery Row famous for anything other than the novel. In fact, it was only after the publication and success of the novel that the name of the street was officially changed from Ocean View Ave. to Cannery Row. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ron g (talkcontribs) 17:48, 3 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

While that may well be true, today Cannery Row is a tourist attraction in the city of Monterey that no longer needs to be referenced to the John Steinbeck novel for fame.--Amadscientist 01:45, 9 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Possibly better lead photo edit

Recently uploaded File:Line3012 - Flickr - NOAA Photo Library.jpg seems to me more striking than what we have. - Jmabel | Talk 00:57, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Agree. This is clearly better and I've made the replacement. Only reason for even including the other one is that it's taken from a slightly different spot. Perhaps we should start a photo gallery for different views of the street, as is done for Monterey Bay Aquarium SBHarris 01:07, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
In general, galleries are more appropriately done on Commons & linked from Wikipedia. - Jmabel | Talk 23:44, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
What for? Did you look at my example? What's wrong with doing that? [1]SBHarris 04:12, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Upwelling edit

From NOAA: "The vast extent of the Monterey Bay Sanctuary, spanning 300 miles of coastline, is characterized by its diversity of oceanographic settings. Upwelling centers located north and south of Monterey Bay (see Figure 3) are the primary source of cool, nutrient-rich water in the sanctuary. No scientific evidence supports the commonly-held belief that the deep Monterey Submarine Canyon contributes to upwelling within the Bay itself." There is a widespread belief that upwelling takes abyssal water, which is about 3 degrees F, up to the surface. But as evidenced by the actually observed temperatures of upwelled water (from 48-56 F), what upwells is from the sub surface layer, i.e. much shallower than abyssal waters. It may include bottom water from the continental shelf-bottom, and it may include deeper water that has been turbulently mixed and modified, but there is no straight shot from the depths to the surface. Besides, bottom water in the Monterey Canyon is moving DOWNward. It's a drainage. Tmangray (talk) 18:51, 7 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
