Call ofDuty 5

According to IGN and an announcement made by Activision (fraid I can't provide a source for this) the next game is released in 2008, and Call of Duty 6, developed by Infinity Ward, will be released in 2009, so to keep up Activision's one-game-a-year policy. Should this not be changed? I will search for the right page, but I'm sure you can find it on any game website.--Hammerandclaw (talk) 15:55, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us The next Call of Duty series should be based on 1 single large map. Where you can free roam around and choose your own path of what missions you want to do in any order. however you will not be able to do certain missions until you weaken the enemy from other areas on the map.VandleNI

Addendum: Though at the time of this message, the COD4 article has been deleted twice due to lack of sources. In any case, if there is no source, we should remove the COD4 entry in this list entirely. --Scottie_theNerd 11:10, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
I agree. There is no way of telling if CoD4 actually exists, or if it is even in production...

Thoughts Of What Is To Come?

There will always live a burning desire to defend your country and heritage, a time at which you will respond to the call of duty and fight in the greatest global conflict known as World War 2. Through such games as the Call of Duty Series the children of today’s time relive the fight of their fathers. Call of Duty 5 is coming back to the WWII era and for many gamers this will be a breathtaking game. Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty 2 game redefined WWII games in terms of beautiful graphics and game-play. Treyarch is not too far behind, what it fell short of in Call of Duty 3 it will make up for in 5. I have high hopes for this game and I am glad that the WWII series are not over. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.91.193.68 (talk) 01:56, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Call of Duty 5 release date

The article currently suggests CoD5 is being released in Activision's fiscal 2009, or April 2009 to April 2010. However, the article previously stated April 2008 to April 2009, which sounds much more likely because Activision has indicated they want Call of Duty to be a yearly installment franchise-hence the whole controversy over the developer of 3 and 5. I'm pretty sure the game is supposed to be released before April 2009 like the article used to say, but the dates have been changed. Why would Activision reveal their 2009-2010 lineup at a December 2007 conference? ShadowUltra (talk) 14:13, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia is not cyrstal ball. We cannot get the exact dates so we put an estimate. AP Shinobi (talk) 14:15, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

But wait, in this same announcement they said Guitar Hero IV is being released in the same fiscal year. That game is being released this fall, which is before the dates listed in this article. ShadowUltra (talk) 17:49, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

CoD5: Not on PSP

Historical inaccuracies in the series

There are actually a few glitches in historical accuracy.

The most noticeable was the British campain in CoD2, with Israel featuring on the briefing map instead of Palestine. The state of Israel was created in 1948 only.

Another example is the availability of a G36C in CoD4's Chernobyl/Pripyat story arc ("15 years ago"). The G36 rifle family was only produced from 1997 onward.

Source: Wikipedia —Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.176.233.124 (talk) 09:23, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

You are correct about the map. As far as the G36 goes, the game is set in a not-too-distant future, so it could easily take place in 2012. 71.36.52.178 (talk) 05:46, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

Next Installment(COD6?)

They still extract material from ww2(e.g.: COD World at War). COD4 was very good for a mostly fictional scenario(so good that it maybe turned into a film). Maybe next installment will be about after-events of an all-scale nuclear war around world. A typical trained soldier in this kindda stiuation might be good to play. Call of Duty: World at War is not Call of Duty 5

Hasn't Activision made it clear that World at War is not a numbered COD game, and COD5 will be made by Infinity Ward?

See here and here. World at War is the fifth game in the main series, and Infinity Ward is developing the sixth. Activision has ended the number scheme, so any Call of Duty games after CoD4, World at War included, will not have numbers in the title. -- Commdor {Talk} 05:20, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
If that's true, then why does this wiki article have Call of Duty: Vietnam listed as Call of Duty 5? Especially considering one of the sources actually specifically notes that it is Call of Duty 6? Phoenix00017 (talk) 01:34, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
That was simple IP vandalism, just reverted. -- Commdor {Talk} 01:43, 19 November 2008 (UTC)

Characters of Call of Duty merge

The Characters in Call of Duty article is in rough shape. It lacks any substantial third-party sources, and thus fails WP:N. It was previously nominated for deletion and while there was no consensus to delete, there was no consensus to keep either. A compromise would probably be a merge. There's some decent information about the game's plot tucked in there, and would be appropriate to add to the overall coverage of the series at this article. The articles are probably stronger together than they are apart. Randomran (talk) 21:56, 11 November 2008 (UTC)

I wouldn't oppose a merge, so long as the summaries are cut down a bit. This article's only going to get bigger with each new game, especially if Activision continues to ship them out annually. -- Commdor {Talk} 22:08, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Making the summaries a little tighter would help. Another option is to merge the recurring characters in to the series article, but merge the one-off characters to the articles for the individual games. Just thinking out loud. Randomran (talk) 18:43, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
I remember being on the fence in the discussion mainly because there were slight signs of notability. However, the amount of unsourced, nonnotable content in the article far outweighs the sourced, notable content (Capt. Price and the action figures). I think Randomran has the right idea. Split it up and merge into the related articles. That will strengthen the other articles and the overall topic more. I would also tighten up the summaries before merging. I remember that worked well with the Kingdom Hearts characters. My two cents. (Guyinblack25 talk 16:06, 24 November 2008 (UTC))

Well, if no one's strongly opposed to it, I'll start on the merge. I like Guyinblack25's idea to merge each game's characters to their respective articles, so that's probably how things will look when I'm done. -- Commdor {Talk} 22:48, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

And that should take care of it. I've only played CoD4 and World at War, so I was careful not to remove anything that could be important, but I've trimmed off most of the trivial stuff and everything looks like it turned out fine. -- Commdor {Talk} 00:36, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for taking this on! It looks great, IMO. If people want to adjust the amount of detail, that would be okay too. But really, a stand-alone article for all the characters in the entire series is kind of inappropriate, at least by the standards of WP:N. Randomran (talk) 21:17, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Sgt. John "Soap" MacTavish

Where in the game does it say that he is a sergeant and his first name is "John"? Note that in the start of Call of Duty 4, he was considered as an "F.N.G" which means "F***ing New Guy".--Dan2paul (talk) 13:10, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

If you play the game, then at the very beginning of the level entitled "F.N.G." (F.N.G. is not an official military rank) you will see a readout on the lower left-hand side of the screen which gives the location, time, and the character's name and rank. I removed that his first name was John since that wasn't there, but everything else is verified. -- Commdor {Talk} 17:51, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
I know F.N.G is not a rank but I don't recall seeing a Sgt. anywhere.--Dan2paul (talk) 09:31, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Just a general note, it looks like Activision Blizzard confirmed that Call of Duty 6 will in fact be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The article has been updated to reflect this, and the source can be found here. -- Commdor {Talk} 00:14, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

That's just a regular person's blog, I think it should be removed, I'm looking on the Infinity ward site and I'm not seeing anything related to it —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.3.74.218 (talk) 02:16, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
It was also announced here, but the MTV source (which is isn't just a random person's blog) was found first; in any case they both say the same thing. Also, the websites of developers and publishers are usually very slow to update, and for there to be anything about Modern Warfare 2 on IW's site, they would have to reveal a bit more about the game. Obviously, either IW or Activision wants to keep the game under wraps a while longer, so for now the title is all we get. -- Commdor {Talk} 02:25, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Themes (and other misc.)

I was noticcing something. In the three versions of CoD developed by Infinity ward, there are two recurring themes.

The first is Captain Price, who appears in every British mission (except the tank missions in CoD2) in call of duty, cod2, and modern warfare, and has the same appearance and acts as one of the mentor characters. Could someone maybe check who voices him and see if it is the same? And does anyone have any idea if captain price from cod is the same one from cod2?

The other is how these all feature the Americans, British, and Russians as the "good guys", even though the Russians are not playable in modern warfare (except for the DS version).

I've also noticed in these 3 games that the credits are done similarly, each showing a non-playable scenario from an aerial view, while other cod games have nothing close to this.

Then there is the recurring name Zampella in the IW games. I could have sworn that I've seen him in the credits. I'm wondering if the majority of the British/American names are taken from the development team (such as Ssgt. Griggs).

Sorry that this is all over the place, but since this is a rather large series I think it should have a larger page, and these are just some things I've noticed that could be good fillers. 71.36.52.178 (talk) 05:57, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

All are unnotable fan sites, which are discouraged from being added per WP:ELNO and WP:LINKSPAM. We want to keep external links to a minimum, and in this case that means links to the official game and developer sites, not fan sites, forums, or blogs in general. -- Commdor {Talk} 00:08, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

World at War is not a spinoff

"Call of Duty: World at War developed by Treyarch is the fifth and most recent spin off of the main series" No where in what is cited does it state that it is a "spin off", except a comment. Seriously. As if it wasn't annoying enough to hear this, wikipedia has to enforce it.

Forgot to add a note here, but I corrected the section. It appears that the incorrect info was added in around a month ago without anyone noticing, likely IP vandalism. Anyway, it shouldn't be a problem now. -- Commdor {Talk} 21:37, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

Fix something about the second paragraph to remain neutrality

It says that it is primarily developed by Infinity Ward only. Treyarch developed Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, 3, World at War, and Call of Duty 7 (going under a name change after a formal announcement). I would like somebody to fix the maragraph so that it says "The Call of Duty video games are published by Activision and Aspyr Media and have been developed primarily by Infinity Ward, and Treyarch, with other games being developed by Gray Matter Interactive, Spark Unlimited, Pi Studios, Amaze Entertainment, and Rebellion Developments, ect..."

This way Wikipedia remains neutral towards the developers and not provide bias over Infinity Ward alone. 76.24.154.251 (talk) 01:11, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Call of Duty 7

A few weeks ago, I actually met with Bobby Kotick by happenstance at a friend's house. Kotick definitely confirmed the development of Call of Duty 7 (though he called it by another name, which I can no longer recall). He also said that it would take place in Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos, and would be developed by Treyarch, not InfinityWard (continuing their trend of giving the title to IW one year and TA the next). Of course, I have no way of citing this, so I'm loath to introduce it into the article - as I'm sure the lack of a reference will have it removed immediately. But it's definitely confirmed for release in Fall 2010, it's definitely under development at Treyarch, and it's definitely going to take place in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. These have all been confirmed at the highest levels (in fact, the highest level). Should this be reflected in the article?? --Derryl C (talk) 20:36, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Dividing the 'Main Series' section

Since it's become clear that the series has branched in two, and the developers have stated that they consider the Modern Warfare games to be their own series, to the extent that they originally wanted 'Call of Duty' cut from Modern Warfare 2's title, I propose separating '1. Main series' into '1. Original series' and '2. Modern Warfare series'. We could also place 'Future' headings at the bottom of both of those series sections, so that once we know what's coming up, we could keep that information separated as well. Does anyone else agree with this? This is what I would imagine it looking like:

1. Original series
1.1 Call of Duty
1.2 Call of Duty 2
1.3 Call of Duty 3
1.4 Call of Duty: World at War
1.5 Future
2. Modern Warfare series
1.1 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
1.2 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
1.3 Future

So, what does everyone else think? The only problem I can see with it is upcoming games that we don't know how to categorize yet. However, we don't really need the Future sections, we could also just leave the Upcoming section as is. Byakuya Truelight (talk) 13:11, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

I like how the article has developed since I implemented this idea, and now I think that since each sub-series of Call of Duty is separated, somebody should make a graphical timeline of the main games in the series by release years. Byakuya Truelight (talk) 12:46, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Call of Duty Black Ops not just Vietnam

The main page says that Call of Duty Black Ops will be a Vietnam based game. Although it is correct that there will be portions that involve Vietnam, the developers are stating that it will be a Cold-War era based COD.

call of duty 7 shoul be black ops. i can tell this by black ops being in vietnam and call of duty 7 in vietnam —Preceding unsigned comment added by Red dawn 369 (talkcontribs) 21:35, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Modern Warfare (series)

In the intro paragraph, I noticed only Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 were listed as being the only ones that did not take place in World War II, this is not true, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex both take place after World War II. This should be changed. Dolten (talk) 22:32, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

'Black Ops' section, and 'WW II Q3 engine'

A citation (and rewording) is needed. I don't think any information in the section should be kept, it even seems to be a mix of original research with unverified content.

Also, in the [of Duty] section, text states 'based on the World War 2 Quake III Arena engine'. As my account isn't autoconfirmed I can't perform the changing of the sentence to state 'is a World War 2 video game', or remove the sentence altogether. --NTAuthority (talk) 07:43, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

That is not the title. Infinity Ward has said multiple times that they call it Modern Warfare 2 not Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Besides it sounds stupid. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.72.201.95 (talk) 10:44, 18 March 2011 (UTC)

Call of Duty: Elite

Third Person?

The page mentions that the series includes "Third-Person Shooter" games, although I'm not sure exactly whether there is a Nintendo DS title of that nature, or if this phrase is being used to refer to the portions of the game that are technically third-person. I believe this issue should be clarified. I can vouch that no single Call of Duty title that has been released for the Xbox series of platforms is third-person in nature, although, as I said, certain portions of the games (vehicle control primarily) use the third-person viewpoint to depict the player's actions. If there are no existing Call of Duty games that are solely (or primarily) third-person in viewpoint, I believe that the aforementioned fact should be noted, so as to clarify and reduce the chance of confusion by such individuals as myself. Many thanks, the anonymous user associated with the IP address 76.95.72.143 (talk) 09:18, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

I think its referring to the option to play multiplayer in third person in MW2, which was removed from the series since. Marlith (Talk) 20:25, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

Ben Cichoski as a "Creator"

First off. It's Cichoski, not Chichoski.

Secondly, Cichoski is responsible for creating the TCG, not the game itself. The information on the page is misleading, hence people believe that Cichoski is the creator of the Call of Duty series, rather than the creator of the card game.

The man works for Upper Deck.

Sort this out. The info is misleading.

Concerning Anders Behring Breivik

Hi,

Norwegian terrorist Anders Behring Breivik used Call Of Duty to train for his murders of 77 civilians in 2011, according to his manifest [1].

I recently added the text above to the Wikipedia entry, but it was removed by another contributor. Is this information not relevant to the subject matter? --Bjornte (talk) 05:53, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for taking this to talk. I cited the policy of WP:NOTNEWS. Let's see how notable the media make this out to be in say oh a year from now. You might also want to take a look at WP:RECENTISM. Dbrodbeck (talk) 12:16, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I have now read the policies. I arrive at a different conclusion, though.
As of writing, the Google search ´breivik "call of duty"´ has 'About 320,000 results' [2] and 428 news articles registered by Google. How many web / news articles does an event need before it is considered "notable"? In my perspective, hundreds of thousands of articles sounds like "notable".
Also, the policies cited notes that wikipedia entries should be "balanced". As of today, the Call Of Duty entry does not at all mention the controversy of war games. Is this balanced when a mass murderer specifically mentions this particular game as a training resource?
I would strongly suggest including the semantics of my original contribution, if not the exact wording. To not mention this controversy seems like censorship to me, and I would guess, at least to most Norwegians. --Bjornte (talk) 17:15, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

What is the rush? Let's wait a few months at least, and see if this still gets coverage. I would like to see what others think. BTW, I have no intention of censoring anything, I am simply trying to follow policy. Dbrodbeck (talk) 17:24, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

There are entire sections of the Wikipedia entry for Call Of Duty that concern recent events, e.g. the section for Modern Warfare 3[3]. So if recent activity should be removed, then mentions of e.g. Modern Warfare 3 should be removed, if I understand it correctly.
I appreciate that this is a collaborative effort and that I might be mistaken, and therefore I won't resubmit the text myself. However I'll make a cross-post to the talk page of Breivik and get the sentiment of the editors there.--Bjornte (talk) 18:04, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
It may in fact be relevant for his entry, but not the entry here. Because other stuff exists here, that is not an argument. Dbrodbeck (talk) 18:55, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
FUrther, I just did a search on 'Brevik Blonde' and got 30 000 hits. I imagine this means we should mention him in the article on blond hair? Please see WP:GOOGLE. Dbrodbeck (talk) 19:07, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
I also disagree with the suggestion that removal of the Brevik section means that we should also remove all mentions of modern warfare 3. The reason being is that Modern Warfare 3 has a far stronger relation to this article than the Brevik material does. Or to put it another way a game from a series is more relevant to a article for the series the game is from.--76.69.168.124 (talk) 23:38, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

This material should be included in the Anders Behring Breivik's article, not here. It just happened to be 2011 and WoW/CoD just happened to be popular. There is no actual connection with the game other than that. Media has (as always) made a big out-of-context deal out of the video games. There's recent news events relevant to the subject, and then there's recent news events to sell newspapers (or have banner ads clicked nowadays). This is like mentioning every murderer under the influence of heroin in the heroin article. Yahtzee possibly said it best: "Pressing buttons to fire a gun in a video game is about as far removed from the workings of a real gun as my ass is from the dark side of Europa." — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 21:44, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Quoting previous poster: "It just happened to be 2011 and WoW/CoD just happened to be popular. There is no actual connection with the game other than that."
Now quoting Behring Breivik: “I just bought Modern Warfare 2, the game. It is probably the best military simulator out there and it’s one of the hottest games this year. … I see MW2 more as a part of my training-simulation than anything else. I’ve still learned to love it though and especially the multiplayer part is amazing. You can more or less completely simulate actual operations.” [4]
I would argue that is an actual connection.--Bjornte (talk) 09:24, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
"It is probably the best military simulator out there and it’s one of the hottest games this year" -- exactly my point. I just happens to be this year's hot game. Let me put it this way: if he had practiced in a shooting range, would we include that fact in the shooting range article? Oh wait, he has: [1]. The content belongs in his article, not in every game he happens to mention. This is undue weight. — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 10:12, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
 • Do not include, per WP:NOTNEWS. --John (talk) 17:42, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Capt. Price page

This is one of the longest and recognizable character to appear in the series. This guy is literally a legend and every COD fans since the first game knows that he played an important role in every Infinity Ward games, and i hope a proper page about him can be made. The guy won awards, well-recieved by game critics, and infinity ward has license in owning this character.

Most of all, there's no Soap Mactavish if there's no Captain Price. He appeared in all major Infinity Ward COD games and i think he needs to be part of the page.

I created a page about him Capt. Price and i hope everyone can help me in making it more delete proof than old Price pages. --Godzilladude123 (talk) 7:15 pm, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Revision Requests from Activision Publishing, Inc

Hello, my name is Christy Buena from Activision Publishing, Inc. I noticed the first sentence of the Call of Duty Wiki entry is inaccurate and wanted to make sure I addressed it in the appropriate manner.

The current, inaccurate text says, “Call of Duty is a first-person and third-person shooter video game series franchise, created by Ben Chichoski.” (Chichoski is also misspelled in the Wiki entry).

Suggested, accurate text is as follows, “Call of Duty is a first-person and third-person shooter video game series franchise, created by Infinity Ward and published by Activision.”

For support, please see the following sources, which indicate Mr. Cichoski’s involvement with the Call of Duty Card Game. Please note Mr. Cichoski is not listed in the Call of Duty credits nor was he an employee of Activision:
