@CambridgeBayWeather: Hello. You reverted my moving this page to a less ambiguous title with the reason "Does not require a disambiguation and incorrect". Could elaborate?
This temple is in Hawaii, USA, and there is another temple with exact same name in Japan. This ambiguity was reflected in a merge which had been listed on the to-do list for WikiProject Buddhism before I noticed the mistake. I'm therefore not sure why you think there is no ambiguity or why you think the title I set was incorrect. Scyrme (talk) 16:20, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- This is Byodo-In Temple and the original in Japan is Byōdō-in. The Japanese is spelt slightly different and in the US one "Temple" works to disambiguate them as having Byodo-In and Byōdō-in would be confusing. See Wikipedia:Article titles#Precision and disambiguation. It was at Byodo-In Temple (Hawaii, USA) but that is overprecise as a disambiguation. Also as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style#US and U.S. the USA should not have been used but should have been Byodo-In Temple (Hawaii, United States). However, it does not need the State, Country disambiguation. You see this in other articles. For example Aberdeen Lake with two in Canada and one in the US but province/state is all that is used. But there are only two temples in the world, so if more disambiguation was necessary it could have been Byodo-In Temple (Oahu), Byodo-In Temple (Hawaii), Byodo-In (Oahu), Byodo-In (Hawaii), Byodo-In Temple (United States) or Byodo-In (United States). However, I'm not sure that diacritics are sufficient to disambiguate the subject for most readers as they are unable to type macrons on their keyboards and may not even know what they mean so would be most likely to search for and refer to both without the diacritics (as people often do when looking up Japanese terms) making the spelling insufficient for disambiguation. Similarly, since both are temples and one is named after the other, both could accurately be referred to as "Byodo-In Temple". The article for Byodo-In (Japan) even does this, reading:
Similarly, it uses "Temple" with a proper-noun capital elsewhere to refer to Byodo-In's bell. Of-course the article could be edited to remove these references but I suspect for many readers the ambiguity would still exist. I'm therefore not convinced that "Temple" works to disambiguate them. Perhaps Byodo-In (Hawaii) would be best for the replica temple, without being too precise?
