Burnishing is basically the same as polishing, and does not only include pottery. The current definition is really only one technique of burnishing.

I came to this page to check that a link that I was putting in another article was well founded. This is where I landed. Burnishing is a process that is applied in many fields. I don't know all of them. I was surprised to see the main link as pottery. Pottery certainly uses burnishing but so do many other fields.
Burnishing is a process to accomplish a change in the surface characteristics of an object. It is generally employed in metalworking to accomplish three things, 1. make the surface denser than the underlying material, 2. improve the surface finish of the object, and 3. change the dimensional characteristics of the object by a very small amount. These three goals would apply to any product to some extent or another. For example in pottery the densification and improved surface finish would be applicable but the dimensional change would be trivial. In woodworking the densification would be useful, the surface finish helpful for sliding parts and aesthetically pleasing, the dimensional characteristic would be of marginal use for parts that are very closely fitted.
Here's why I don't know what to do. As can be seen burnishing is a broader idea/process that is presented. It is also tightly coupled to pottery. What is needed here is a disambiguation page (which I don't know how to do) or a complete revamp of burnishing with its own page and a link to burnish. I don't want to do this without some guidance. I also feel that I could make a good start on burnishing but would need someone more expert than I to advance the page. Begs (talk) 16:54, 7 January 2008 (UTC)
