Question about movies relevance to 2002 Japanese culture

I think one element that could be talked about with this movie is the fact that there is a discussion about homosexuality before it became 'mainstream'. This could have been a good talking point within the article, about whether or not this movie paved any major paths, or if this movie was following or trend.
