If he was born in 1896, then how could he have been "the zoologist on the RRS Discovery voyage to explore the Antarctic in 1901"?

This man is among the greatest innovators in marine plankton research. He invented an automated plankton sampler that exploded our knowledge of marine biodiversity. His work is what made Global Ocean Sampling Expeditions of the DNA age possible for example.

209 papers on Google Scholar since 2000, as of 2008Jan10 cite the machine. This is not bad for a guy.

Also, I think Andrew Brown's Darwin Wars or so has a line about him observing the "flensing" of seals in the Discovery or other voyages.
