Patrick Gatonga (born 9 September 1985), is a Kenyan business executive and physician.[1] He serves as the Group Chief Executive Officer at AAR Insurance Holdings, a general insurance company founded in 1984 with operations in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, since September 2022.[2] Prior to his appointment, since July 2020, Gatonga was Chief Executive Officer at Jubilee Health Insurance, a subsidiary of Jubilee Holdings Limited based in Kenya.[3][4] Between October 2016 to October 2018, Gatonga was Commercial Executive at Old Mutual, East Africa.[5] He also served at McKinsey and Company as Senior Consultant since October 2013 until September 2016.[6]

Early life and education edit

Gatonga was born on September 9, 1985, he grew up and completed his elementary and secondary education in Kajiado and Nairobi, Kenya. Between 2005 and 2011, Gatonga attended University of Nairobi, Kenya, he graduated with dual bachelor's degrees in Human Anatomy (First Class Honours) as well as in Medicine and Surgery. He also enrolled in same university for postgraduate degree in Business Administration, where he graduated with master's in business administration in 2011.[5] He served in the University’s faculty as a teaching assistant, training undergraduate and postgraduate students in Human Anatomy.[4]

Career edit

In 2011 after university studies, Gatonga worked in a joint health development program of UNICEF and AMREF Health Africa in Kenya until October 2013.[7] Subsequently, he joined McKinsey and Company, Africa, where he served as Senior Consultant until September 2016; in this role he worked in multiple sectors (mostly in financial services, investment and logistics) across Africa and the Middle East.[8] In October of same year, Gatonga joined Old Mutual to become Commercial Executive responsible for East Africa.[9] The position he served for 2 years until October 2018 when he joined Jubilee Insurance Company Limited.[10]

From October 2018 to July 2021, Gatonga served as the General Manager at Jubilee Insurance Company Limited.[11] Addition to this, in July 2020, he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Jubilee health insurance, one of the main subsidiaries of Jubilee Holdings Limited.[12][13] Gatonga served in this position until September 2022 when he joined AAR Insurance Holdings as its new Group Chief Executive Officer.[14][15] He also serves in the Boards of AAR Healthcare Services Uganda Limited and AAR Insurance Kenya Limited.[16][17]

Gatonga also dedicates his time to music (especially classical music) and leadership development. after his high school he was offered scholarships to learn music in Japan and Sweden but chose to study medicine in Kenya. In 2023, he was appointed to serve in the Council of the Kenya Conservatoire of Music and occasionally performs with classical music groups in Nairobi.[18]

Gatonga is married to Sheila Gatonga, and the couple has 3 children together.[18]
