The Asian Cup Winners' Cup was an association football competition run by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The competition was started in 1991 as a tournament for all the domestic cup winners from countries affiliated to the AFC. In the first four editions of the Cup, the final match was played in two legs.[1] After that, the final was always held as a single game and hosted by one of the two finalist teams or in a neutral country. Persepolis won the first edition of the tournament by beating Muharraq. Al-Hilal won the last championship in 2001–02, defeating Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors. The champion of this cup competed with the champions of the Asian Club Championship for the Asian Super Cup title.[2] In 2002, these three tournaments combined to form the AFC Champions League.
