Why does wikipedia ignore facts and dismiss them as opinion or not true?

edit

This is not a opinion of mine i have seen it before as well as freinds where data from reliable sources or first account documentation from people during there time periods well the information gets deleted for not being factual or there is not a secound source to back it up. 2601:983:280:EF30:9544:542D:B278:C946 (talk) 04:09, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! It's hard to answer such a general claim, but it probably comes down to the quality of the independent reliable sources involved. If you have a concern about a particular article, per the Wikipedia:BOLD, revert, discuss cycle, you start a discussion on the article's talk page to work with other editors to come to a consensus. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 04:15, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For example, we don't accept purported first-person accounts as reliable sources; we need content sourced to actual published articles in publications which exercise quality control and editorial supervision. --Orange Mike | Talk 05:42, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please give us an example where "data from reliable sources" was "deleted for not being factual"? It will allow for a much more constructive conversation if we can look at a specific example.--Gronk Oz (talk) 12:33, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
First, Wikipedia has a parochial definition of reliable source, and does not include first hand accounts.
Second we (TINW) are individual editors, operating under wiki guidelines that are often subject to interpretation. You will get better feedback if you identify the specific articles, editors and issues that you are referring to.
Do I like all of the policies? No, and I've stopped writing large articles because the lack of an effective dispute resolution mechanism allows some editors to create a hostile work environment. But they are what they are, and I have to make edits in accordance with them. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 17:30, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia's policies border on useless if nobody is empowered to actually enforce them. Instead, we have to go through maddeningly inane drawn-out processes to revert material that in any other organized realm (except politics) would be just a matter of course to correct. I've been an editor for nearly 50 years, so I know what of I speak. I've also been involved in a volunteer grassroots organization for 35 years where everyone's voice counts. In either "realm", disputes over guidelines and common sense, with rare exception, can be resolved in a day or two, most in a few minutes. Meanwhile, in WP, significant changes are made that can stand for years without scrutiny. Yeah, just maybe they'll be corrected some day, but that mantra was uttered when WP was a bit more than a gleam. Now it's so widely accepted, its published material is taken as fact. By that I mean, authors are citing WP as a source, which in turn allows WP editors to cite what these authors write. Please tell me how this situation serves making "knowledge" freely available if the process behind it is so unreliable? Allreet (talk) 15:39, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Allreet: WP editors should not use sources which cite WP per WP:CIRCULAR. GoingBatty (talk) 16:21, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just to confirm, do you mean you have been an editor for a paper, or such for 50 years? Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:26, 31 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Spousal categories

edit

Should wives/husbands be in their spouses' eponymous categories? What about former wives/husbands or partners? Thanks, Sod25 (talk) 06:55, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give a specific example? I can think of relatively few people who have eponymous categories. For some of them (e.g. Category:Bill Clinton) the spouse's article is in the category. For others (e.g. Category:Donald Trump and Category:Bill Gates) the spouse's or former spouse(s)'s articles are not in the category. Interestingly, although Hillary Clinton is in the Bill Clinton category, Bill Clinton is not in the Hillary Clinton category. I think it depends on the mood of who is doing the categorizing at any particular article. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 13:51, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't find a policy but the usual answer based on a small and unscientific sample seems to be no. Some famous people have a family category as well as an eponymous category, so Category:Ronald Reagan and Category:Nancy Reagan are subcategories of Category:Reagan family. TSventon (talk) 14:03, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ONUnicorn I was looking at tennis playeres. Mirka Federer is in Category:Roger Federer for example, but some other non-tennis people I checked didn't have their spouses in their categories. There doesn't seem to be hard a fast rule, so I only put the spouses in the categories I was creating if the categories' subjects contributed significantly to their spouses'/partners's notability. CS1 error: author has generic name

Can anyone please explain how to fix the error-message for instance at: Essence (magazine), footnote 21 (ref to ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood: A Salute to Trailblazers at the Oscars) ?

Thanks, --Dick Bos (talk) 09:08, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed with |author=((...)) [1] after looking at the help link in the error message. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:24, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@User:PrimeHunter, Thank you very much for fixing this. I had seen the help link, but apparently I didn't understand it completely. But now I understand! If you know it, it's always very easy! Thanks again, and friendly greetings, --Dick Bos (talk) 08:03, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

2 questions: 1) Re: Wikipedia's "List of stage names"

I have in my PC about 18000 stage names + birth names, i.e. approximately twice as much as are listed now on Wikipedia.
What is the best way to upload this, because it would mean that the present list would have to be deleted.

2) I have compiled a dictionary of more than 140,000 English language medical abbreviations in alphabetical order with their explanations, i.e. more than you can find anywhere worldwide. It is written in Microsoft Word. Is this of interest ?

Have a great day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Imthechief (talkcontribs) 13:48, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Imthechief: Hi there! I suggest that you post your first question on Talk:List of stage names, and your second question on Talk:List of medical abbreviations. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 15:00, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help- with my page

edit

Hi,

I am creating a page for somebody. I have created an account but can't figure out how to make sure the page has the person'a name. The page is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Lbarrackcavalier

I want to make the headline be his name which is: Leonard Barrack

How do you do that?

Thanks, RB — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lbarrackcavalier (talkcontribs) 14:25, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Lbarrackcavalier: Hello RB! First I must ask, is this person paying you to create the page? Regardless of whether or not they are paying you, you have a COI, which I linked to the policy explaining what to do when you have a COI. Second, if you are being paid, I suggest you read WP:PAID and disclose that you are being paid (if you don't you will be blocked). Finally, you would want to create the page at Draft:Leonard Barrack if they are deemed to be notable, instead of your userpage which isn't where drafts belong. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:28, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You'll find advice at WP:Your first article, but first you need to satisfy yourself that the subject is notable in Wikipedia's terms, see also WP:NBIO. Also please see the advice against autobiography. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:31, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What are discretionary sanctions?

edit

I've read through WP:ACDS multiple times, but I still don't have a concrete idea of what discretionary sanctions are. The closest I got was Any uninvolved administrator is authorised to place: revert and move restrictions, interaction bans, topic bans, and blocks of up to one year in duration, or other reasonable measures that the enforcing administrator believes are necessary and proportionate for the smooth running of the project. But isn't it true in general that admins can impose blocks and move restrictions regardless of whether the topic area is subject to discretionary sanctions? Rublov (talk) 17:39, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

They can't unilaterally place revert and move restrictions, interaction bans or topic bans. Regarding blocks: they can place blocks, but the main difference with ACDS blocks is that another admin can't unilaterally undo the block (it can only be undone by consensus at WP:AN or WP:AE, or by ArbCom motion). How to align kit templates next to each other

edit

In this section, the football kits don't align next to each other. Ideally, I would like the kits to be perfectly aligned, and the first row of the years between each other. Nehme1499 17:46, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Nehme1499: the article uses a one-row table, each cell of which is a Football kit with a title. to get it to line up, use a two-row table with Football kit s in the first row with no titles, and put titles in the second row. -Arch dude (talk) 18:36, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, thanks! Nehme1499 19:28, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild

edit

Hello. I am ZX2006XZ. So, I have been working on the draft for The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild for some time now. Unfortunately, the draft has been in AfC purgatory, meaning that it has been declined and rejected several times despite significant coverage on the film itself. Can someone help me move the draft to its rightful articlespace, which is currently a redirect (see this link) as of asking this question? ZX2006XZ (talk) 19:02, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The article has been rejected. I don't think anyone here will move it to mainspace for you. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:03, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's been declined eight times, and rejected three times. And now it's been submitted yet again. A likely outcome is that it will be deleted and salted, making it impossible to create it again. Maproom (talk) 19:18, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@ZX2006XZ: Hi there! It appears that your draft was originally submitted WP:TOOSOON multiple times, and you were encouraged to submit it again after the film was released. Now that the film has been released, hopefully there will be more reviews from reliable sources that you could add to the draft. GoingBatty (talk) 19:44, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Help with draft article

edit

Hi everyone. I am a new wiki editor (approx 1 month). I have drafted an article on monochrome astrophotography. I drafted all of this in a word document and then pasted it over to my sandbox. Is it possible for someone experienced to review it before I publish it? help would be greatly appreciated!

Link to my sandbox article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Starlights99/sandbox

Thanks, Starlights99 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Starlights99 (talkcontribs) 19:09, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Starlights99: I suggest that you move it to draft (or ask someone here to do that for you) so that other editors are willing to help you with it; and replace "[source]" with links to actual sources. Others can help you with the styling etc. Maproom (talk) 19:22, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Starlights99: After you move it to Draft:Monochrome astrophotography and fix the sources, then add {{subst:submit}} to the top to have it reviewed. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 19:25, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: Would it be appropriate for me to move it to draftspace for them or should i let them do it? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:46, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Blaze Wolf: Looks like Theroadislong already moved it. GoingBatty (talk) 20:04, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah alright. Cause I was going to move it but was unsure if it would be appropriate for me to do so. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:05, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It would be good if the draft could include a false-colour image such as those it describes (though this won't help it get accepted as an article). I don't know how hard it would be to find a suitable image without copyright restrictions. Maproom (talk) 09:44, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly does this do?

edit

Hi everyone, I've been an editor on Template namespace for quite some time now, and it appears that {{{|safesubst:}}} is used extensively across templates, and I don't exactly know what it's purpose is. Most recently I spotted it at {{They}} but I can't make out its function. Can someone please help me figuring out exactly what it is? Thanks! ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 19:22, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@CX Zoom: Does the explanation at Help:Substitution#The_safesubst:_modifier help clarify it? RudolfRed (talk) 19:27, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RudolfRed: Are {{{|safesubst:}}} & {{safesubst:...}} the same thing? If yes, that makes a lot more sense to me now. ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 19:53, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@CX Zoom: They are not the same. {{safesubst:...}} performs the substitution as soon as the code is saved (unless something else deactivates it). {{|safesubst:...}} does not perform the substitution on the page where the code is saved, but it does on other pages which substitute the page with the code. See Help:Substitution#An example of recursion in action. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:31, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is this adequate information to add my book to the Wiki page on Free Improvisation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.144.236.52 (talk) 20:19, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Trevor! To suggest an addition to the Free improvisation article, please post on the article's talk page: Talk:Free improvisation. Be sure to explain why this would benefit the readers of the article (otherwise it looks like you're just trying to promote your book, and Wikipedia is not a place for promoting your own work). How do page logs work?

edit

When I try to look at the logs for a page I created (John Wayne Bobbitt Uncut) it shows nothing. Other pages show who created and/or deleted the page. Am I doing something wrong? I am using this link. Polycarpa aurata (talk) 21:04, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Polycarpa aurata: That log shows certain activities, but article creation is not one of them, and the article you mention has never been deleted. I think the log is working but none of the logged activities have happened to that page.
If you want stats on who created the page check
Access this for any article through history --> page statistics. Bluerasberry (talk) 21:38, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Bluerasberry, other page logs I have looked at show the page creation. Mine doesn't. Polycarpa aurata (talk) 21:50, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It'll only show page creation if you are autopatrolled I believe. I've passed the article through WP:NPP Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 21:57, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I can see that it says you "reviewed" it now, but it still doesn't show that I created the page or that I moved the page. What does "autopatrolled" mean? Polycarpa aurata (talk) 22:26, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Polycarpa aurata: Everybody gets a page creation log, also IP's (example). But the log is only at the title where you created the page: [2]. The move log only shows a page at the title it's moved away from: [3]. The move is in the page history of the current title but not in the move log. Autopatrolled is not relevant here but see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled if you are curious. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:11, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, PrimeHunter! I get it now. Polycarpa aurata (talk) 03:30, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tool for counting pageviews for created articles per username

edit

There is some tool hosted in the Wikimedia platform.

Give it a Wikimedia username, then it identifies every article that user has created, and then reports how many pageviews those articles have had since creation.

The result is a count of readers reached for any user's created new articles.

Can anyone refer me to that tool? Bluerasberry (talk) 21:34, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bluerasberry: Hi there! If you go to the bottom of Special:Contributions/Bluerasberry (or any other user's contributions page) and click the "Articles created" link. GoingBatty (talk) 00:43, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
