Call for submissions

ARTICLE DUE DATE: December 31, 2017. The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) and WikiProject Computational Biology are pleased to call for article submissions for the 2017 ISCB Wikipedia Competition. The ISCB aims to improve the communication of scientific knowledge to the public at large. Wikipedia plays an increasingly important role in this communication; the ISCB Wikipedia Competition aims to improve the quality of Wikipedia articles relating to computational biology.

Entry to the competition is open to students and trainees of any level, both as individuals and as groups. Participants are invited to edit an existing article relating to bioinformatics or computational biology, or create a new one.

Prizes of up to $500 will be awarded to the best contributions as chosen by a judging panel of experts; these will be awarded at the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology conference in Chicago in July 2018.

trainees

Competiton dates

So at my university (UBC), there is a graduate level course taken by all bioinformatics students, in which they have to write an article on an uncovered topic related to bioinformatics as a class project. This has been going on for several years now, and generated some quite high quality articles. Unfortunately, the course is always run in the January to April term, while the competition has always run from July to December, so none of the articles written could be entered into the competition. I wonder if we couldn't discuss adjusting the competition running dates so as to work better with the academic year? -Kieran (talk) 21:24, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Kieran, yes, we've been discussing the same thing as the current setup doesn't allow for 2nd semester courses to contribute. The current plan is for the next competition to run over this calendar year, but I haven't confirmed yet - I expect there will be an announcement soon though.
