Edit summaries

edit

Thank you for your many contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you usually do not include an edit summary with your edits. Help:Edit summary says:

Always provide an edit summary

edit

It is considered good practice to provide a summary for every edit...; otherwise, people may question your motives for the edit. Accurate summaries help other contributors decide whether they want to review an edit, and to understand the change should they choose to review it.

Edits that do not have an edit summary are more likely to be reverted incorrectly, because it may not be obvious what the purpose of the edit was.... when a major edit ... doesn't have an edit summary, some busy editors might ... revert the change without evaluating it properly. Providing an edit summary helps prevent that kind of error.

Summaries are less important for minor changes (which means generally unchallengeable changes, such as spelling or grammar corrections), but a brief note like "fixed spelling" is helpful even then.

To avoid accidentally leaving edit summaries blank, registered editors can select "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" on the Editing tab of the user preferences.

Edit summaries are also helpful because they advertise and encourage others to make the same fixes you make. For example, if you change "it's" to "its", and you put in the edit summary, "it's → its", that helps promote awareness of the issue and encourages other editors to pay attention to the issue.

I hope you will routinely provide edit summaries. Cheers! —Anomalocaris (talk) 18:44, 13 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Understood. I routinely make sure to add summaries to major edits that are made. As a good example referring to 10:49, 13 August 2021, what can be confusing are the recent edits made that can be seen on my contributions are minor edits such as correcting syntax errors and spelling, and do make sure to select minor if major edits are not made that do not add any significant new content. I will be more diligent to include edit summary each time a page is changed to avoid additional confusion. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. — BenKlesc (talk) 02:51, 14 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
