I first became interested in Wikipedia when I was part of a Summer 2020 course taught by Wiki Education that trains scholars in how to edit Wikipedia. Learn more at wikiedu.org.

I have included Wikipedia assignments in three courses for undergraduates, learning from my mistakes.XFLQR (talk) 05:00, 21 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Invitation edit

Hello, XFLQR, I have noticed your interest in articles related to Disability. I'd like to invite you to become a part of WikiProject Disability, a WikiProject aimed at improving the quality of articles dealing with disability on Wikipedia.

If you would like to participate, please visit the project page for more information. Thanks! Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 00:12, 2 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Students working on Deaf culture edit

Hi XFLQR, if I may I'd like to give some advice for your students who are assigned to work on Deaf culture. Please emphasize that they need to read and carefully consider the issues raised at the article talk page and also read and consider improving Deaf culture in the United States as well. There are unresolved issues at/ both articles. If they need further topic specialist input WT:WikiProject Deaf is a good place to ask. WP:WikiProject Disability is also available to assist all your students with advice about any other issues. Thanks Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:00, 10 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice, Roger. I'll be sure to pass it on. The Deaf education topic is another that that group will be looking at. As I explained to them, it's not an area where I can give much guidance, nor can my co-instructor (whose background is in assistive tech/design and engineering). Although some of the other students have been a bit bashful about getting started, they're likely to appreciate the suggestions.

WikiProject Disability edit

Hi. Dodger67 mentioned here that it might be helpful for your students to introduce themselves at WikiProject Disability where there's a community of people who might be interested in helping your students. I think it's a great idea to help your students understand the community aspect of resource building on Wikipedia. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:32, 11 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi XFLQR, it's me again. The article Assistance for airline passengers with disabilities which you've tagged for improvement is indeed sorely lacking. It currently summarizes the rules and policies but is completely silent about what actually happens "at the coalface". Putting the phrase "airline broke my wheelchair" into Google will reveal just how bad the situation actually is. Most will be unusable social media posts, but there are some good nuggets of mainstream press sources to be found. Regards and good luck with the course. I'm available if you or your students would like an external opinion or advice from a crusty long-time regular Wikipedian. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 07:24, 16 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
Another suggestion... I see a few students have not yet registered an article to work on. Dignity of risk is a very important principle that currently has a substandard article. It is closely related to Least restrictive environment which is on the students assignment list. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:04, 16 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
I see there are a fairly large number of students all working on Ableism, I fear they might bloat the article even more than it already is. I left a note on the article talk page, I hope they take it into consideration. Shortening or splitting an article can be a more valuable contribution than simply adding content.
