Expansion of Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Paid_editing#Statement_by_Ha!

1st set of examples (Elance:Nicholas_A) edit

  • Brad Sugars - "We would like a quote to create a wikipedia article about our CEO Brad Sugars - similar to the following ... wiki/Brian_Tracy wiki/Jeffrey_Gitomer wiki/Al_Ries I will be able to provide external resources upon request and you can also interview Brad if required. We have attempted in the past to upload something ... but was removed - probably because it was not unbiased enough. This is why I am writing to you, a third party to provide this service. Thanks" [1]
  • Oil Gone Easy - "Hi There, I would like to have my product submitted to Wikipedia ( [obscured] ). Here is the basic idea – this is one of the first retail bioremediation products to be marketed in the United States. It can be used for driveways and also to clean boat bilges. The product was used to clean up the Prestige oil spill and is now available to retail buyers. Please give me a call on my cell at [obscured] if you would like to discuss. -Scott" [2]
  • Ken Underwood - "I need a short article written and posted on WikiPedia. I would do it myself, but quite frankly, Wikipedia is very confusing to me. The article is about a serial entrepreuneur who has created many businesses, one of which has several media mentions (Inc Magazine Online) and others which are fast-growing but still not mentioned in the media. Ther article doesn't have to be long, perhaps just 200 words. But once it's up, I will need help with modifying it and adding to it, if necessary. This could either be you making the changes or perhaps coaching me how to do it via email. I will provide specific details, including a short bio of the man, and URL's listing his "notability." [obscured] Added 9 APR 2009, 12:41 PM EDT If you bid on this project, you will need to have sufficient privileges and reputation of WikiPedia to post the article and have it remain. Thanks." [3]. Note: The Elance client name is the same as one editing the article: Ryannagy".
  • Stereofame - "As discussed, Wiki page on Stereofame.com. Here is a full page article that just came out regarding Stereofame: [obscured] news/metro/ [obscured] /story/ponte_vedra_beach_man_brings_musicians_fans_together_online and article from the previous Wikipage that you created: [obscured] tu-online/stories/091707/bus_199680674.shtml Also, see attached document which has some info from the Stereofame website. Let me know what else you may need. Can you start this fairly soon? Attached Files: Untitled2.rtf (ed. The file is a copy of stereofame.com/about.html" [4]. Note: The same Elance client that advertised for Ken Underwood advertised for this article.
  • National Defense Industrial Association - "We would like a very fresh and informative wikipedia page for our organization, that includes images, links, etc." [5]. The Elance client name is NDIA, the acronym for National Defense Industrial Association. The advert bidding close date was 22/04/2009 and the resulting article changes by User:Zithan from the 10/05/2008 did exactly what was requested in the brief (before [6], after [7]).
  • Process Window Index and Thermal profiling - "Already have a Wikipedia entry, but it has been sited as an orphan (no inbound links), does not cite references and requires cleanup. We can provide links and references. I need someone with solid Wikipedia experience to tell us what you need and to "clean-up" the site so it meets Wikipedia standards." [8]. Note: The Elance client name is the same as one editing the Process Window Index article, User:Beoleary. It's not too obvious but the net result here was that the article was expanded, a new one created and the Elance client company (stated as "KIC. Thermal Profiling..." in their Elance profile - i.e. the KIC Thermal in the article) was promoted as reliable sources and external links for both (including their service technician's site). As far as the Wikipedia articles are concerned, they are now fairly dominant with respect to this process that their company sells, although it's possible that's the way it should be because they actually are in reality (I don't know the field). The talk page which questions the reliance on just one source (KIC) was archived at the same time although, again, that could be innocent.
  • Dalberg Global Development Advisors - "What I need done: I need someone to write the entry on Wikipedia for our company: Dalberg Global Development Advisors. What I already have versus what the provider will build: I can give you all the text on our website in Word form from [obscured] You will have to look online to find the links to Dalberg that will validate our entry. Other context/requirements that providers will need to know: Writing a wikipedia entry requires a specific style otherwise the site is deleted. It cannot be a marketing site. Please suggest a price for 1) attempting to get our entry up, and 2) it being not removed by wikipedia a week later. Specific expertise that I am seeking: Obviously you have to have basic writing skills and an ability to write in a journalistic style. Also comfort with Wikipedia's functionality. Timeframe for delivery: Would like to have the entry up in 2 weeks. Hopefully not removed by week 3. Location: Anywhere in the world. Future: Prospect of being used in the future for web content or copywriting if work is good." [9]
  • Broncolor - "Need someone to write up wikipedia entries for two companies. I created the first entry and it was tagged to rapid deletion from Wikipedia due to lack of sources. See attached file. The companies I want to list are both over 50 years old. I want to highlight their history and what they have contributed to teh world of prefessional photography. Let me know how much it would cost to wtire approvable articles and submit to wikipedia. [obscured] BR> [obscured] BR> Thanks Attached Files: Broncolor_Wikipedia_entry.docx (ed. It's the previous deleted Broncolor Wikipedia article and mentions the sister company as well)." [10].
  • Click4Carbon - "We own an environmental information site. The site has a number of elements: 1) A section with helpful hints and tips on how to reduce your carbon footprint. 2) A carbon calculator where you can compare your carbon footprint against the country you live in. 3) A social network where registrants/members can take part in discussion forums, write your own blogs. 4) You can search the internet and we will be making available other products and services that you buy directly via us. Profits generated from usage of the site are used to fund forestation projects. We would like wikipedia article written about the site. In an non advertorial fashion so it doesn't necessarily need to promote everything that the site offers. We would also want to add links from other wiki - green, environmental, green etc related articles either directly to our site or to our own wiki article. Whatever you think would be appropriate. The web address etc will be confirm in private." [11]
  • The Marketing Performance Measurement and Management article/redirects - "Need a Wikipedia page writer for 1 project initial content developed interested parties please send the following: contact information compensation requirement available start date projected completion date Send above to [obscured]." [12]. The Elance client is vemadmin from Texas. A google search for vemadmin Texas finds only one relevant result, Vision Edge Marketing from Texas (the only other google result is java source code for slightly different search terms). A search of their website for vemadmin finds that their articles (pages) are "Creator, vemadmin" who, it's safe to assume, is the Vision Edge Marketing website admin and also the same vemadmin that is the client on Elance. The advert bidding end date 06/10/2008 matches with the article creation date 06/10/2008 (that was a move from sandbox and unrelated article name so really the first content edit was 24/10/2008). A result of this article was the three references plus outgoing external link to Vision Edge Marketing (a reciprocated inbound link to the Wikipedia article is also on each page on that website) and the additional reference link to Vision Edge Marketing President Laura Patterson's book on Amazon, which came out the month before the advert and Wikipedia article and is also promoted on the VEM website.
  • Dave Levine/Sextoy.com - "I need an experienced wikipedia writers to write a few articles on varying subject matter.I will pay per article written. Writer must show that they have an account with wikipedia and other online wiki sites and have written substantive articles before in the past". [13]. Note, the connection is based on the bidding close date 23/09/2008 and article creation date 30/09/2008, the correlation of the location of Levine and his company and the Elance client (California) and a different advert from the same Elance client for a streaming Flash movie project that states "warning, do not click on the links if the adult sites offend you"[14] as well as elimination (the only other article left is Qualifying Industrial Zone and that doesn't match)

There are two adverts that didn't result in Wikipedia articles

  • This article didn't have time to be created. The bidding end date was 11/06/2009 and the Elance account and Wikipedia User were publicised around that time - "Topic or description of what I need written: I would to commission a Wikipedia article to be written, approved by me, and then published for a company. Notability is not an issue, since the Company is well-known. What I already have versus what the provider will deliver: Full details on the Company is readily available online. Other context/requirements that providers will need to know: Will be provided/ Specific expertise that I am seeking: Extensive experience writing Wikipedia articles. Timeframe for delivery: As soon as possible." [15].
  • This one didn't get an article or any edits that I can find - "Good day. My name is Mike Wills, and I am the President and CEO of Herobits Corp. I'd like to discuss a project for the creation of an entry for our collectible card game, Herobits, on Wikipedia. I'd like this to include a profile page as well as several (relevant) links to the profile from other pages. I have no Wikipedia editing experience whatsoever. I have used Wikipedia, of course. :) To be clear, I am NOT looking for an advertisement page or Wikipedia "press release". What I'd like is a neutral and factual unbiased entry identifying this collectible card game. I have reviewed Wikipedia and there are several examples of card games with entries. If this is something you are interested in please present a proposal per the job above.Thank you. Mike Wills" [16]

The only other article User:Zithan created is Qualifying Industrial Zone (and it's associated list). It doesn't match any of this particular Elance user's accepted proposals (paid editing jobs) because there are no more accepted adverts to match it with. I believe it is a paid editing job though (more than "conjecture", less than "know"). Ha! (talk) 13:41, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Reasoning: Michael Ta is the document creator of all of the documents attachmented to other jobs the Elance client advertised for. On reading them, it becomes obvious he is Elance client. Greg Rips and Viva Properties are also mentioned in one of those documents attached to an advert for a brochure. A search for Michael Ta on Wikipedia immediately finds Viva Properties in Victoria, Australia. The Elance profile states Victoria, Australia as his location, the same as Viva Properties. WP article: The noclaimsdiscount.co.uk links added to various articles on or around the 6th Feb
WP user: User:Cinagua, User:Chabaka, User:Vpopescu User:Yaromunna
Reasoning: Checked Cinagua for links added around 6th Feb. Noticed noclaimsdiscount.co.uk. Did a Google search for site:en.wikipedia.org noclaimsdiscount.co.uk. Checked every result. Found 28 links to noclaimsdiscount.co.uk added by User:Cinagua, User:Chabaka, User:Vpopescu in early February and User:Yaromunna in late February. The NoClaimsDiscount.co.uk article was created by Chabaka at the same time. I'm sure there's another 2 links to make the full 30 but my eyes hurt so I'll settle for 28. We would like an experienced Wikipedian (or whatever they are called) to work with us to create a valid piece for upload to the site. Our site is a popular insurance news site that has moved into insurer information and reviews as well. We currently have our own Youtube channel with two news readers. Basically, we feel our site has great merit (above and beyond some of the companies listed on Wikipedia) but would like assistance from someone who knows what works well. We would prefer if you could upload the piece once it is created to add validity as no-one on our staff currently has a Wikipedia account. Thanks Mike

Other context/requirements that providers will need to know: I need someone who is able to write a more formal bio for sites such as LinkedIn, while a more casual write-up for sites such as facebook and Myspace. I also need a wikipedia page created, citations will be provided. The length of the bio does not need to be too long. I want it to be impactful, transparent and exciting to read.
