Wikipedia:WikiProject Warhammer 40,000/General Page Guidelines

These guidelines were created for the purposes of organizing the Warhammer 40,000 articles in Wikipedia. They are intended to unite differing armies, strategies, backgrounds, and locations; bring each army together for better comparison; and create an organized WikiProject for those who want more information on the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

These general guidelines fit for any and all articles under Warhammer 40,000.

  • Indicate in the discussion page what type of Warhammer 40,000 page it is, to allow for easy access to the guidelines
  • No traditional Warhammer 40,000 dating. This is considered jargon that those unfamiliar with Warhammer 40,000 will not understand.
  • No giving out or listing rules for any game. We are here to give people on the Internet general and helpful information, not give them rules to play the game. Those of us who already play or are simply interested in information on topics or armies we are unfamiliar with will not need the rules anyway. Moreover, this infringes on GW copyrights.
  • Refrain from jargon in general. If there is no way to avoid using jargon, please define the term when it is used.
  • Do not judge or rate armies/races/planets/etc, in any way. This constitutes a violation of WP:NPOV.
  • Refrain from "Inspiration" or "Influences" sections, as they lack significance and cannot be verified.
  • Do not use quotes or include stories. This is unnecessary information.
  • Check with the discussion page on any major changes before any guidelines or articles. When this is done, cite yourself (give reference) or indicate that references do not have that information which was removed. For more guidelines in Wikipedia overall, see: WP:GUIDELINES.

Definition of Pages edit

In the Discussion section of an article, note the type of page from the list below, and link to this page so other Wikipedians can properly edit, ask questions about, and learn how things work for a better Wikipedia:WikiProject Warhammer 40,000.

The Definition page organizes all article types within the Warhammer 40,000 range, and gives them a detailed definition in order to exclude surplus and/or illegal articles and information, such as articles on homebrew rules, races, and planets.

Army Page

An Army Page is any article that focuses on an official 40K army with an official Codex published by Games Workshop. Armies include:

These armies have their own sections on the official Games Workshop sites in the Warhammer 40,000 webpages.

Supplement Army Page

A Supplement Army Page is an article about an official army that is a supplement to an already existing army or race in Warhammer 40,000, which also has its own published Codex and rules. These include:

  • Various official Space Marine Chapters
  • Eldar Craftworlds
  • Notable Imperial Guard Armies

There are also some "unofficial" armies (armies that do not have models or rulebooks in production by Games Workshop) that have official rules. These will be listed as a Supplement Army Page, but must require the following:

  • Have rules written by Games Workshop
  • Must have existing models created by Games Workshop
  • Are allowed in tournaments

Examples are: Genestealer Cult, Harlequins, and Kroot Mercenaries. Note in their Army Page that they are an unofficial army, and are not readily available like other armies. (Would making an unofficial army into a stub article simply work?)

See Army Page Guidelines for details

Technology Page

A Technology Page (Weapons, Vehicles, Equipment Page, or WVE Page) is an article that briefly describes the various weapons, vehicles, and equipment for a particular army (e.g. "Tau Technology"). Supplement Army Pages will not have this type of page. Instead, any peculiar technology will be listed and noted in their original army's "Technology Page".

  • Note: Tyranids do not typically have the same idea of technology as other armies, but will have a page. ("Tyranid Bio-Technology Page")

See Technology Page Guidelines for details.

Notable Character Pages

A Notable Character Page is an article about special characters. See Notable Character Page Guidelines for details.

Galaxy Pages

A Galaxy Page is an article that describes and discusses the galaxy (Milky Way) both physically and immaterially (the Warp), the different sections, inhabitants, and important time periods and how they affected the galaxy.

Notable Planet Pages

A Notable Planet Page is an article about a specific planet with its own history. In order for a planet to qualify for its own article, it must include the following:

  • Mention in a background fluff story made by Games Workshop
  • A sufficient history to uphold its own article (150 words or more for history)

(See Warhammer 40,000 Planet Page Guidelines for details)

Historical Event Page

A Historical Event Page is an article about a specific time period with important events in the Warhammer 40,000 background. To qualify as a notable event in the Warhammer 40,000 history, the event must be of the following:

  • An Invasion or Conquest mentioned by Games Workshop
  • A period of time mentioned in a Warhammer 40,000 rulebook or published Codex (or)
  • A series of events that occurred in different time periods. (e.g. Tyrannic Wars, Black Crusades)

  • Have mention in Games Workshop materials in relation to Warhammer 40,000
  • Constitute significance in one or all Warhammer 40,000 games
  • Must be a topic with at least 200 words or more
