Fix template

edit

{{editprotected}}

Have the <noinclude> directly after the non-breaking space on the same line and with no space in between, I experimented with it and doing this solves a problem where a space is put after the template. Thanks! --WikiSlasher 04:50, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Actually replace the text in the main part so that it is the same as {{Welcome}} but without the bold header. --WikiSlasher 05:01, 15 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nonsensical message in code

edit

In the template source code, it says the following:

Hello, {{BASEPAGENAME}}<noinclude><!-- please don't try any noinclude:subst tricks here, won't work, see talk--></noinclude>

I can't find the "talk" it references. It's not on this page, nor any archives; after I traced it back to this 17 December 2006 revision I thought maybe it was the commenter's talk, but the December 17th revision of their talk and their December 2007 archive shows nothing about it.
Doesn't make any sense to me. {{Welcome}} and most others use subst:/safesubst:/{{{|safesubst:}}} and they're fine. It should be substituted to help new users understand: see the Welcometest page.
Not going to get my hands dirty this time; not feeling exceptionally WP:BOLD at the moment. Meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 08:02, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Did a little more digging and found this to be (his) next edit. Meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 05:52, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think the key lies in

Actually replace the text in the main part so that it is the same as {{Welcome}} but without the bold header.

If it was copied from the November 2006 revision of Template:Welcome then the note refers to the thread on Template talk:Welcome, not here!
Over at Template:Welcome, the insertion of that note first appeared 26 June 2006, meaning “see talk” was referring to the then-current 19 June 2006 Welcome template talkpage (not the talkpage I'm on right now). Based on the changes to Template:Welcome around that time the person who wrote that cautionary comment is referring to conversations such as this and edits such as this, where people tried various methods to substitute {{BASEPAGENAME}} but were thwarted. Assuming it was available at the time, WP:SAFESUBST would have been perfect. Even the supergeeks over at VPT [1][2] barely seemed to understand safesubst due to poor documentation, so I'm guessing it was never used?
Piecing all this together after 8 years...
The transclusion counts back in 2006 were 13,000+.
Today, thanks to a discussion, AnomieBot now auto-substitutes them. Apparently, at some point someone figured out a way to substitute 10K+ templates. Right now according to Templatecount there are 0 transclusions. Ergo, original comment on Template:Welcomenh (pasted from Template:Welcome) referring to Template talk:Welcome can now be safely ignored as the prohibitively high transclusion count is nonexistent.
Conclusion: remove the warning; it's stale. Problem solved. If somebody hates my solution, revert. 'Til then, I think an 8-year-old note about a problem back then isn't worth keeping. Meteor_sandwich_yum (talk) 08:06, 6 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
