This is the format used in the A-League 2006-07 preseason cup finals series - possibly other events as well.

The layout:

• Eight teams have already been split into two groups of four and ranked 1-4 in each group.
• 1st in each group plays 2nd in the other group, as do 3rd and 4th place.
• The winners of the 1v2 games play-off for first, the losers play off for third place.
• The winners of the 3v4 games play-off for fifth, the losers play off for seventh place.
