"Later in the 1990s and into the next millennium, melodic British rock groups like Radiohead and Coldplay achieved great critical and commercial success."

Of course part of that sentence is correct. However, I think I am correct in saying that Coldplay didn't break through until 2000 with 'Yellow', etc. So some clarification is needed here. Perhaps there should also be a bit (in the rock section) about the decline of Britpop in the late-90s, and how bands reacted to this (such as Blur, with their eponymous album and 13, in comparison to the constant rock 'n roll by numbers of Oasis, and the impact of records from bands that weren't part of the Britpop scene as such, i.e. OK Computer?)--Richj1209 20:44, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've written some stuff in the alternative rock article you can probably use to talk about this stuff. WesleyDodds 18:27, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

is it not music? edit

How can you descibe the UK music of this period without mentioning the Spice Girls and other boy/girl bands? OK, it's not my taste in music either but from the perspective of the average music listener this might be regarded as the most relevant theme in music of the period. Or is it not "music"?

Time for a new era? edit

I think this article does not cover the music from the present. i think a new article should be created for the 2000s, so music from that era can be more emphasised.

Agreed, the article covers music up to the late 90s, but tails off and the recent resurgence of indie and new britpop, for example the success of the Arctic Monkeys, as well as a decided drop in 'pop' music as it was when the spice girls were at their height. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.105.227.16 (talk) 21:36, 8 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Dance music heavy edit

Why is this topic so dance music heavy? Nothing against it, but there was a lot more to other genres than what this page seems to suggest.

you can tell this article was written by an american who lives in england —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.35.196.152 (talk) 18:01, 3 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Leona Lewis edit

Also with her debut album Spirit and international chart topping hit "Bleeding Love", Lewis brought British music on an international level

What's this? So Leona Lewis has brought British music to the world then? Funny, I though the Beatles did that in 1963, but perhaps I'm wrong. Good old Leona, well done!

How ridiculous this reads remains to be seen, but I can imagine it's something akin to saying Sheena Easton brought British music on an International level in 1981! --Tuzapicabit (talk) 17:49, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

yeah i agree - damn fucking americans

Split edit

Now that we're well into the final year, shouldn't this be split into two articles (1990s and 2000s), as with the previous two decades? I'd attempt it, but the article needs a lot of cleaning up at the same time, so maybe better left to a more regular contributer to the page.--Tuzapicabit (talk) 16:02, 5 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

This article clearly needs a split, but there is not really sufficient information for two articles. If anyone has suggestions of missing genres of the period it would be really helpful to suggest them, so that the two parts can be expanded sufficiently.--SabreBD (talk) 14:52, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Clean up edit

The article is due for a clean up, supplying some citations and covering the gaps, I will undertake this after a bit of time for objections/suggestions. If you have suggestions, particularly for missing genres please post them here so that they can be added. I will split the article is it is of sufficient length.--Sabrebd (talk) 09:15, 1 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

This now done. The article was not split because there just was not enough to justify a separate 2000s article. Its not that there isn't any music, but probably that there is just not a lot written about it yet. This can be reviewed if those sections are expanded.--Sabrebd (talk) 10:25, 16 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal edit

I agree that British music 2000s in British music should be merged here. In truth there is not much to merge, since most of the material there is not about British music at all, and what is, is completely unsourced. The article also has a title that does not fit with this series of articles which run from the 50s/60. Now that the decade is over (just - at time at writing) I would like to revisit the splitting of this article and the creation of seperate articles with the titles: Music of the United Kingdom (1990s) and Music of the United Kingdom (2000s), (both redirects here at the moment), when there are sufficient sources available, but as I have pointed out in the two sections above, they may not exist yet.--SabreBD (talk) 10:01, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
