History
The Boston and Providence Railroad (B&P) opened its West Roxbury Branch from Forest Hills to Dedham via West Roxbury on June 3, 1850. Stations at South Street (later Roslindale, now Roslindale Village), Central (Bellevue), and West Roxbury all opened with the branch.[2]
A grade crossing elimination project in the late 1890s raised the tracks above grade. A rail bridge was built over Roberts Street, while South Street was cut at the tracks, with only a pedestrian underpass. The 1898-built bridge over Roberts Street will be replaced with a modern bridge in June 2021.[3]
Bus connections
Roslindale Square is an important bus transfer location; nine MBTA bus routes run on Washington Street between Forest Hills and Roslindale, then fan out to the south and west. Five of these routes (plus the 14, which terminates at Roslindale Square) serve the station directly via Belgrade Avenue:
- 14: Roslindale Square–Heath Street
- 30: Mattapan station–Forest Hills station via Cummins Highway and Roslindale Square
- 35: Dedham Mall or Stimson Street–Forest Hills station
- 36: Millennium Park or VA Hospital–Forest Hills station
- 37: Baker Street & Vermont Street–Forest Hills station
- 51: Reservoir station–Forest Hills station
Four additional routes stop on Washington Street about 500 feet (150 m) east of the station:
- 34: Dedham Line or Dedham Mall–Forest Hills station
- 34E: Walpole Center–Forest Hills station
- 40: Georgetowne–Forest Hills station
- 50: Cleary Square–Forest Hills station
Route 192, a single early-morning trip, also serves Roslindale Square.
