In addition to 8.000 alumni in its history, IUE today has 7.500 students studying at associate degree, undergraduate and graduate programs in an extensive variety of fields in 7 faculties (38 undergraduate programs), 2 graduate schools (35 master programs, 6 PhD programs), 2 schools, and 3 vocational schools. Among the undergraduate programs offered, there are 7 dual degree programs jointly conducted with State University of New York (SUNY). Next year, Faculty of Medicine will also be in force and will be receiving first undergraduate students, as the 8th faculty.

IUE places great emphasis on internationalization, as mentioned in the Corporate Strategic Plan 2013-2023. With this goal in mind, strong relations have been formed with distinctive universities around the world for student and faculty exchange, joint research and scientific studies. 156 Erasmus agreements with universities in 28 EU countries and 30 cooperation protocols with universities in 12 countries help IUE establishing inter-university exchange of cultures and education approaches with many distinctive universities. Annually, IUE has international students from 60 countries either as exchange or full-time students and international academic staff. Final aim is welcoming students from all world countries to the IUE.

The medium of instruction is English (except Faculty of Law). It is compulsory during the entire study period for all undergraduate students to choose and keep learning a second foreign language out of nine language alternatives (German, French, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese).

In 2009, IUE underwent a European University Association (EUA) Institutional Evaluation Program (IEP) process that aims to contribute to the development of quality in universities and spread examples of effective strategic management. In 2012, IUE had a positive Follow-up Evaluation by EUA to increase the quality and scope of the higher education offered.

IUE follows the latest trends in international higher education to meet the needs of the students and graduates. As a result of this, IUE was awarded with European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) label by the European Commission in 2011 due to the successful implementation of European Credit Transfer System and the Bologna Process. IUE is the first foundation university in Turkey which has been awarded with ECTS Label.

IUE gives Diploma Supplement to graduates since 2004-2005 academic year. As a result of the excellence of the implementation, IUE was awarded Diploma Supplement Label by European Commission in 2010. In addition to the internationalization efforts, IUE moved from 35th place to 28th in the Interuniversity Entrepreneurship and Innovation Index listed by TUBITAK based on the entrepreneurship and innovation performances of the universities. Additionally, according to the 2014 data published by URAP (University Ranking by Academic Performance), IUE is the best university in Turkey in the areas of Language, Communication and Culture.

The university has the official aim to raise participative and creative individuals who are loyal to Atatürk's principles and revolutions. It is the first foundation university of Izmir and the Aegean Region. Izmir University of Economics is also the first specialization university of Turkey.
